“A good meal”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

We enjoyed two good pub-bar meals at the Black Bull. Nothing to write home about but good value for money, pleasantly served - a reasonable choice posted on the blackboard. The regular patrons can be a little noisy but not overly so (I've been in far, far worse pubs). Will be happy to eat there again.

Our room was cosy and clean enough but it is clear that a huge amount of money needs to be spent to bring the whole place up to acceptable standards re decorating......peeling woodchip etc.
The electric toilet squeezed behind a sliding door actually 'exploded' in the morning, causing brown stuff to spread everywhere !!!!! and leakage down to the hall below!
We were swiftly moved to another room, thank goodness .... and the lady who helped us was most pleasant and helpful.
We enjoyed the evening meal of gorgeous home made meat pie and veg .....and breakfast was fine.
But......the cost of £80 for B and B was too much, especially as we went on to enjoy far better quality everything at our next venue for £10 less.

We didn't stay at the black bull but did enjoy a well cooked and substantial pub tea in the quaint restaurant area of the pub. If you want local colour and atmosphere this is the place to go, you can eat inside or out and they serve quickly and with a smile. Good beer! Don't rule the place out on appearance but don't expect posh food either.

Staff were reasonably friendly and the breakfast was OK. But our bedroom was poor. The 'private bathroom/toilet' was not ensuite but 2 separate rooms across the hall so to visit the toilet meant leaving the bedroom, unlocking the toilet, then unlocking the bathroom (bath , no shower) to wash your hands, then unlocking the room to get back in - 3 keys just to go to the toilet. Except for the beds you'd be ashamed to send the furniture to Oxfam, it was so old and tatty. There was a sink unit in the bedroom that seemed to be an old kitchen unit. The carpet was patchy as if it had suffered damage and somebody had tried to spot clean it in a dozen places. The web site says children under 10 go free but when I rang up it turns out that 5 to 10 year olds are charged 1/2 price. There was no apology for the wrong information on the website and no indication that they will change it. Corridors were dark and badly lit. We visited friends staying at the local YHA in Grinton and that was 1000% better - great family rooms and modern bathrooms. We also visited friends staying at another pub/hotel , the Buck , and that was miles better. When we go back to Reeth/Grinton we certainly won't go back to the Black Bull - we'll go to the Buck or the YHA. The Black Bull was down at heel and way overpriced for the accomodation

My husband and I stayed here for two Nights. We are from Norway, and have stayed here before, and like the quaint old pub. Our room had beautiful, rosepatterned curtains and bedding. Just what you expect in a pub like this. Of course it is an old pub, an a bit dilapidated. But that is part of its charm, I think. The steak and ale pie was good, but the Fish and chips was a disappointment. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Stayed at Black Bull for one night when walking Coast to Coast this July Stayed in over a dozen places en route and this was by a country mile the worse. Note in particular:

1. Unclean room.
2. Very old bathroom with an electric shower which didn't work very well.
3. The window had been painted shut and the window furniture removed. This made for a very uncomfortable night's sleep.
4. Poor quality breakfast served by very surly staff or owner.
5. The whole place was in need of some serious refurbishment.

Room Tip: Stay away from this one.

This was my 4th visit to this pub and what a shame that a great meal was spoilt by the music blasting out and some children being allowed to play around with a football, I think these kids were in some way connected to the pub landlord. Luckily they were the other side of he pub or I would not have stayed.

We ate in the main bar as we were a bit scruffy, but I did go into the restaurant to get a menu and the music was still far to loud.

The food was off excellent quality and quantity.

Both my son and myself had the duck which was good value, excellent quality and a good portion, with lots of veg.

We were wet and tired after a long walk otherwise because of the noise, we would have found somewhere else to eat.

Others were also commenting on the nose, with one couple saying it was like eating in a disco, no wonder it was not as busy as on other Sunday nights that I have visited this pub.

Without the noise and the footballing kids, I would have rated this pub a 4.

I can't understand what the landlord was playing at!
