stayed 4 nights.lovely hotel -not architectually a beauty but interior is pleasing ,friendly , helpful staff. It was a quiet hotel ,set in green well tended gardens with a good sized pool and baby pool. The breakfast was sumptious and catered to all tastes.
This is not the place to stay if you want "hectic clubbing scene".great for familes and couples wanting to enjoy an attractive smalltown with marvellous rocky coves and pretty beaches.
Would stayat the hotel again and explore this area of costa brava further

The 60's exterior of the hotel belies a very pleasant interior. The restaurant, lounge areas & bar are all comfortable & welcoming although underused when we were there. The setting in beautiful gardens with the swimming pool & tennis court add to its attractiveness. The hotel is a short walk down to the town, its beach and shops.
We were pleased that on arrival we opted to upgrade to a room with a terrace & views of the garden and the sea - it was well worth the extra 17 Euros/day, & this included free parking in the hotel car park.
The buffet breakfasts were copious, though the fruit juices were poor quality. Our deal was for half-board & the dinners were generally delicious - lots of choices with the menu changing daily. The staff were friendly & helpful, especially receptionist Marta,& all the ones we met spoke some English & did their best to understand our attempts at Catalan.
We had a problem with our ensuite washbasin, which leaked & was very slow to drain. It took a couple of days & a reminder to the manager for this to be sorted. In spite of that we intend to return to the Hotel Alga, maybe combining it with a stay at its sister hotel in Girona.

Room Tip: Its worth paying extra to upgrade to a room with a terrace & views of the sea & gardens.

We stayed here for five nights and booked it because it had a pool which very few hotels have in Llafranche or Callella. Normally I would stay in Llafranche and I have to say I do prefer it to Callella. The room was booked through an agent although the site makes it look like you are booking direct with the hotel and we would have got much better rate and been able to have a room with a balcony and view if we had. Our room overlooked the carpark which wasn't great and was ok but very sterile and plain. The pool and grounds are really good but there is a distinct lack of staff anywhere during the day. We didn't eat dinner but the breakfast was very good. Overall it feels a little bit faded and compared to some of the really stylish small hotels in that area needs a facelift. I thought it was expensive for the overall experience.

Room Tip: Book direct with the hotel and go for a room with a sea view.

I would give this hotel 3.5 stars if TripAdvisor let me.
A hotel built in the ?1960s? Located a couple of rows back from Calella de Palafrugell's front line, about 10 minutes walk to Calella's several (small) beaches the and numerous restaurants and a steep walk back, that's no reflection on the hotel it's just the way Calella is made. Guest population mainly Catalan / Spanish with a smattering of English and French.

Generally clean hotel, all public areas are easily accessible and airy.
Can only comment on one room which was large enough for me, my wife and teenage daughter but the bathroom was in need of TLC due to its age. Very small balcony overlooking roofs and car park but understand bigger balconies with better views available at greater cost.
Lovely, mature, well tended gardens with plenty of trees providing shade where necessary
Good size main swimming pool with small kids pool adjacent. Main pool was usually clean but the amount of chlorine dumped in the main pool the day before we left was literally eye-watering!
One large, light and bright, restaurant on sub ground floor overlooking pool area, meals can be taken outside.
Breakfast choice is very extensive and few people should feel the need to pay the supplements for extras such as fried eggs and bacon or omelettes.
Half board is mandatory (at least during the season) default is dinner but lunch can be taken instead as long as reception advised by midday. Food VERY hit and miss, seafood rice and noodle dishes were far too salty. For the rest of the food the chef(s) seem to be trying to do nouvelle but end up doing it quite badly, the best food was average and the rest far from it.
The general (working) staff are a credit to the hotel and almost always have a smile on their faces.

I cannot understand the mentality of people who go to a typically Spanish resort and complain because there are no English channels on their television or the staff cannot speak English very well. I have not noticed when staying anywhere in England that we cater for the Spanish. We have always found this hotel superb in every way and will be returning again this year. Also if people consulted the hotel website instead of booking through an agent they would see that you pay extra for the rooms with terrace and sea view and should not expect these facilities at the cheaper price. Perhaps Benidorn would suit them better and leave this part of the Costa Brava for those who really appreciate it!

Room Tip: Book through the Hotel website where you can choose and pay for the best rooms.

Spent 6 days here half-board. Room was one with a small window, facing the road, not too large, but kept very clean. One drawback of the room was the design of the one chair, with such a low back that it gave me a dull backache, and another minus was that the television had only Spanish-speaking channels, and the reception of these varied. Also the internet connection in the room was weak at times. However, there were 3 laptops in the foyer for use by guests, free of charge. I didn't like the 7 Euros per day charge for using the hotel car-park, so opted to park on the road outside, saving myself 42 Euros over the 6 days, (around £33.)
On the plus side, the breakfast was very good, lots of choice, although if you wanted eggs.bacon etc there was, disappointingly, a 4 Euro surcharge. The evening dinners were excellent, cordon bleu standard, with a choice of four starters/main/desserts.
The gardens are lovely, well-kept, and the staff are very friendly without exception. Children are well catered for with swings, their own shallow pool, table-tennis and so on.
Will probably return and opt for a room facing the garden.
The beaches close to this hotel are in the main small coves, and can become quite crowded, so for a lovely, long 3 mile stretch of sandy beach, I recommend Platges de Pals, around 6 miles away, but worth the trip.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the garden (and the sea in the distance). I did ask, but was told they we...
