“Surprisingly interesting”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

I wasn't expecting much going into the tour, but it turned out to be quite interesting. We might have been lucky that the plant was in full operation when there, but in any case it was enlightening to know exactly what all the tea pickers we'd just seen in the fields were doing, how much they got paid, and how the leaves they plucked ended up in teacups around the world.
Our guide was informative and helpful with all of our questions, and contrary to some other reviews I just read, we were given tea at the start.
On the downside, we did have to wait at least 45mins for somebody to show up and guide us, but we were in no rush and had just hiked quite a ways down from Lipton's Seat, so sitting on some leather couches was no big deal.

“Nice drive to the factory”
Reviewed 11 May 2014 via mobile

The drive is scenic for sure but that's it, management is very bad they don't know how to welcome visitors, they don't even offer a cup of tea... The tour is quick, everyone walks on tea leaves.. No idea why it's a lonely planet "top choice"

“Nice to have a look at a tea factory in process”
Reviewed 10 May 2014 via mobile

We visited the factory after our hike to liptons seat, which was superb! Nice explanation of the guide of processing the fresh leaves into the dry tea. The factory was running during our visit which was nice. You feel history in this building. Unfortunately no tasting after the tour. That's our only negative comment.

“Can find much better and free visit somewhere else”
Reviewed 20 April 2014 via mobile

It is true 250rp ticket isn't that much. But what if other places give you better explanation, serve you tea at the end, offer better & larger choice of tea to buy and the guide friendlier?
Then you realize that 250rp was just a rip off!! Explanation are just ok until you have questions... They just can't respond to any of them. Staff not very nice (ok at least they don't push you to buy tea at the end) and just want to finish the tour asap. This might not be their job as someone stated but then, don't charge the visitors if we are not welcomed
I rather go to visit some other factory where they offer free tour and if you happy you buy their tea even with probably higher tea price and commission going for your driver. Spending would be at your own discretion.
But after saying all that, if you only have the chance to visit that factory (which I don't think it is possible given the number of factories in the region) still worth to see!

“Worth visiting...”
Reviewed 18 April 2014 via mobile

If you are in the area for liptons seat anyway, and havent been to a tea factory yet. 250 Rs entry really isnt that much.

Its a cool building (longest factory in sri lanka, very old) production process is interesting if you havent heard about it before. Not sure what there is to complain about.
