We have stayed here every year for fifteen years. We love the location, restaurants and people. The exterior is looking worn, and a renovation was promised for this year-we'll see.Lots of privacy and the value and food at Astrolabe and Sophie's on the beach is wonderful. A very relaxing vacation.

On the first night of our stay here, we were robbed within an hour of going to dinner. We think it was an inside job or at least someone who was waiting for us to leave the room. They took all of our valuables and our cash. The hotel was not helpful regarding our claim and we spent the better part of the next day at the police station filing a report. I would not recommend this resort.

Ok, we never really write reviews but after doing our research for the Esmeralda before we booked our most recent trip,i thought we should weigh in to set the record straight. We love st martin but have never stayed at the esmeralda so before we booked we did like most people and read as many reviews as possible. while most were positive there were many that made us nervous but we threw caution to the wind and booked 6 nights and just got back on june 1 2011. let me also say that we are not a picky couple but we don't stay in dumps either. we have experienced the best 5 star resorts the world has to offer. having said all that, our stay was absolutely FANTASTIC!!! we booked an oceanfront room which i would highly recommend (buildings 46, 47 or 48). the rooms were very clean and somewhat recently renovated. actually, they are in the process of renovating all the back buildings as well. the grounds could use a little manicuring but who cares, you should be on the beach not sitting and looking at bushes!! the best meal we had the entire stay was at the on-site restaurant (L'astrobe) and it was as good or better than anything we have had in grand case. our room was cleaned spotlessly each and every day and we were left an abundance of beach towels each and every day. the staff couldn't have been more friendly or courteous. as an example, we both have to have "white noise" to sleep (usually a fan running). we went to the ace hardware on the dutch side and bought the last fan in stock. we got it back and it didn't work. we asked the desk attendant if they happened to have one. while they didn't she insisted on us taking the one behind the desk and there is no air-conditioning in that building (open doors and windows). we refused but she kept insisting so we took it and slept like babies. each building has its own pool and it was rare we saw anyone in them. when they were, they often weren't wearing anything so be prepared, after all, when in france.....do as the french do.

to those reviews that complain about this or that at the esmeralda i would say they probably couldn't be made happy any place they stayed. its the caribbean and things look weathered and aren't to the level of perfection you might get at the waldorf in nyc. we couldn't have been more pleased and have officially anointed the esmeralda as our vacation destination in st martin. hope this helps the average traveler make up their mind and for the picky ones, try the westin. its about as close to 5 star amenities as you will find on the island (in a hotel anyway).

This resort definitely had the best beach location and restaurant but the rooms need some serious upgrading. The kitchenette is unusable and the bathroom needed to be remodeled. The bed looked like a mattress on the floor. That being said, we got a very good deal at this hotel (price wise on Orbitz) so we saved a lot in that regard. We would come back to this hotel solely because of the beach location. We had a terrific vacation in St Martin (definitely go to St Barths - we flew over one way and took the ferry back - rented a scooter and saw the most beautiful beaches). Grand Case is awesome at night for dinner. So I would recommend this hotel - but just be prepared that the room is like a low end club med room with an old tv. The AC did work really well however.

Had read all the reviews before we went and was happy with our stay. Couple things that we found were the electric would not handle wife's USA curlers . Needed a converter to work this item and they had none. Not good item to advertise wi-fi and then have to stand next to reception desk to use, need to be able to use anywhere on property. Room was big enough to hold a dance but need to upgrade a little. Kitchen area is one spot to start. Work is being done on the outside of the buildings one at a time. Some rooms have flat screen tv's while other have old ones that do need upgrading. We thought landscaping was great around our units and the pool area is great after a day at the beach. Would go back to Esmeralda again.

We have been to the Esmeralda for the past 4 years. I love this place. Yes, the rooms need updating, but the service is wonderful. Coco Beach is the best spot on Orient beach. Bring your own pillows and a good night's sleep is assured.

It may not appeal to those used to American 4 or 5 star resorts, but I can do without the fancy upgrades for a peaceful beach with a wonderful staff. Great dining either on site or just down the road in Orient Village.

Things got better after I bought a roll of paper towels, & with the dish soap provided with the (ill-equipped) "kitchen," I was able to clean the bathroom vanity & floors more thoroughly. Esmeralda, a lush, sprawling resort with a top-notch location on Orient Bay, presents a really great idea with its clusters of suites...but the maintenance of the rooms & the property leaves a LOT to be desired. The Superior Rooms are dark & visibly rundown (bedspreads gave us the hibbie jibbies). We had to upgrade to a Deluxe (& paid an extra $245! for 5-nt stay)...and even that had dirt in the corners of the bathroom floor, although the bedspread was less scary. (Still dirty on the edges, though.) You won't find the daytime reception staff to be friendly. Otherwise, Esmeralda catches the lovely Caribbean tradewinds, the breakfast croissants are flaky & delish (but don't expect any variation -- it's the same croissants & toasted baguettes EVERY morning!). Nice grounds for strolling. Will we return? Quite likely...but I'll know to pack paper towel, cleaner, and a bed cover that I know is clean!

Room Tip: Must have a Deluxe Room.
