A fantastic end to a great holiday in Cornwall, the food was fresh and delicious and was paired with a nice bottle of Cab Sav. Congrats to the chief!

The food was excellent but the restaurant lacked ambience and front of house left a lot to be desired and did not match the food. Discovered that owners are trying to sell and it showed.

Having read the reviews, we were eager to book this restaurant for our last night in Cornwall. We went early so that we could have their early evening menu. Maybe their full menu is better but we all felt that the food was overrated and portions were not balanced e.g. a good portion of salmon with about two spoonfuls of rice was labelled as salmon with risotto. Likewise, a substantial portion of sticky toffee pudding was accompanied by a tea spoonful of cream.

We saw this advertised in the Trencherman Guide as an up and coming dining spot. After visiting we did not share the sentiments of the write up in the Trencherman Guide.
We had booked a table and arrived on time. There was nobody in the restaurant when we arrived but eventually a member of staff appeared from the kitchen area at the back. We were shown to a table and then waited for 5 minutes before getting menus to look at. After another wait our wine order was taken and eventually served, The food order was taken 15 minutes after we sat down.
The food was a bit bland by our taste. The amusee bouche was an onion tart which was devoid of seasoning. The scallops with parsnip mash and curry oil were unusual and nice but again lacking in seasoning. We were served homemade bread which was heavy and stodgy.
The Main courses of Fillet of Beef and Lamb Loin were both good.
We skipped puddings.
With a bottle of nice wine the bill came to £76. which seemed high for average food and poor service.
The night we visited the gents toilet was unflushable. An unsavoury end to the evening

The food was fabulous, freshly cooked, nicely presented and wholesome. The only problem was a nice one - which dishes to choose. We enjoyed it so much the first night that we booked a second night as we were paying. The second was just as good as the first. The Lamplighter richly deserves the two rosettes it has been earning year after year.
