Sepilok Forest Edge Resort

We stayed in a triple room at the Longhouse at Sepilok Forest Edge Resort. It was a bad deal, grossly overpriced at 45MYR each for a bunk bed. There are many cheaper options to stay, but we were dropped off there by our transfer and too lazy to move.

The hotel is walking distance from the Sepilok Orangutan Center, and we were lucky enough to see tons of orangutans show up to the afternoon feeding: http://erohisms.com/how-to-spot-orangutans-pygmy-elephants-and-proboscis-monkeys-on-a-budget-in-borneo/

The grounds of the hotel ARE beautifully landscaped and they even have their own nature trail—on which we got at least five leeches each. The restaurant also served some creative food, which was a nice change from the typical Malay fare.

My main purpose for coming to Sandakan was really random and sudden. I just wanted to get a quick get away and to just relax, away from work and the busy life haha.
While our stay there, we had the opportunity to be first ones to try out the new furnished room. It was very well furnished; soft beds, clean and air conditioned. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing. There's also a garden with a small pool at it's compound. Services from the staff were very personal and they were all really friendly and helpful.

The restaurant offers a very interesting range of fusion dishes which are quite interesting. Ingredient were really fresh. My fav dessert there which is a must would be the fried wanton chocolate & roasted pineapples.
Seafood there is also really fresh.
Wifi is available!! Board games are also available at the restaurant and free to use if you just want to pass sometime and have some fun with your friends.

Sepilok Forest Edge Resort is also a strategic location to stay at if your interested to see the orang utans as well as the Proboscis Monkeys with just a 15-20mins walk. It's surrounded by greenery everywhere and the air there is really fresh. Away from the busy city!

Highly recommended to give this resort a try.

I was staying in the longhouse accommodation at the hotel and found this to be excellent accommodation for the price. The room was spacious and clean with a hot water shower and large bathroom. The restaurant and the pool area was very nice along with grounds of the property in general which are beautifully kept. Others staying in the longhouse are friendly and I met plenty of others whilst staying here. Local attractions are all within walking distance. I would highly recommend staying here however my one note would be if you do pay in advance make sure you take the evidence with you as they did try and charge me again until I could show them the receipt for the payment as their computer system had not recorded it it seemed however on production of the receipt copy on my I pad this was fine. They also booked me onto the Kitanbangtan River cruise from here which was also excellent.

I had been staying in hostels throughout my trip in Malaysia and was under the impression that Sepilok forest edge was also a type of Hostel. When we arrived however I realized my mistake. While the resort offers very well priced hostel type rooms it also has little chalets that are more private and a little more lavish. The scenery around the lodge is absolutely beautiful! The green landscape stretches for miles making you feel like you are right in the middle of the jungle. At night there are stunning chinese type lanterns that light up the whole area giving it a really stunning glow. Everyone was very friendly and helpful and the food offered at their restaurant was amazing! The seafood is great and very well priced as well as many other dishes on the menu! It was a great experience and we actually extended our stay there just so that we could spend some more time in such a relaxing atmosphere. The sepilok orangutan sanctuary is also within walking distance from the resort and there are a few other rehabilitation centers nearby.
Highly recommended!

Fantastic location
Good standard chalet rooms
Staff not too service focused or accommodating
Dinner main courses small serves and not much flavour, desserts great
Dip pool
Internet wifi doesn't work
But we wouldn't stay again as things seemed to be too difficult for the staff and Just ok for the price

Ps if you book a taxi through the hotel, the staff take a cut of the price.

This hotel is just fantastic. I booked a family room. This room was huge with a very nice veranda, great view over the forest, very close to the Sepilok Sanctuary. The noises at night with birds and monkeys were lovely. I could have stayed all night up listening to them.

Very comfortable room with fan and air condition. The food at the restauant was excellent quality, good variety and not overpriced. Very nice breakfast with an innovative toaster ( open fire).

There is no swimming pool, it is just a sort of jacuzzi to relax, but nt for swimming, refreshing though after a long walk in the forest.
Staff was very friendly and efficient. We will be back.

Room Tip: Book chalet or family room, very spacious and nice verandas

This resort is in a beautiful location. If you enjoy camping holidays, this is what you will love. Our room had many bugs and creatures, even a large mouse/rat that kept us awake at times, but the kids loved that. It was all part of the experience. But do be careful when walking around the site (especially the Forest Trail), because my kids and I got attacked my leeches. You should wear long pants tucked into socks if possible.

The restaurant was nice, and in a beautiful outdoor location. But, there were lots of flies on the food. The young girls working there were wonderful. So friendly and helpful. But when I checked-out, a more senior lady was not so nice, and she tried to charge me for things which should have never been on my bill. It wasn't a pleasant departure. Shame.

In summary, great location, great camping holiday, but over priced considering it is just a camping holiday.
