Like previous reviewers, we were suitably impressed with the views from the apartment, and the apartment itself was quite spacious. However we found the overall experience quite average. They claim a fully equipped kitchen. But this includes a frying pan just big enough to fry a single egg, and when we asked for dishwashing detergent, they said it was not provided. There was not any dishmop or similar either. We thought perhaps the cleaners were responsible for dishwashing, but apparently not! When you are travelling and targeting self catering apartments you do not expect to need to carry kitchen equipment with you. That, along with the luke warm 'hot' water made self catering impossible. We have stayed in many places with kitchenettes, and never found one so ill equipped. We can only assume that although they advertised as self catering, in fact they want to force you to patronise their own restaurant ( which we did not). With respect to the 'hot' water, previous reviewers said it was ok at night, just not very hot for showers in the morning. We found it tepid the whole time. Another irritation was the bath mat. We have been used to Greek showers that tend to flood everywhere. Not really a problem - at other establishments they just replace the soaked bath mats with fresh dry ones each day. Not at Stefanos - the drenched mat is hung over the bath for re-use the next day. Lots of little things that spoilt an otherwise fine building and lovely location.

We recently spent 3 nights at Stefanos Village, and were very glad that we chose to stay in Mirthios instead of Plakias. Mirthios made a wonderful base for sightseeing in the area, and after a long day of touring, it was great to return to Stefanos Village, enjoy the infinity pool and a drink, and soak in the amazing views of Plakias Bay and the Libyan Sea.
We stayed in a junior suite, and it was spacious and well-equipped. The bathroom was modern, and the towels and bedlinens were of high quality. The only negatives were an uncomfortable mattress (quite common in Greece), and the shower was lukewarm in the morning (but fine in the evening).
There was a breakfast buffet, which included eggs (hard boiled & scrambled), fruit, breads, cold cuts & cheese, and coffee. The orange juice was not very good - more like Tang. It would be great if they offered really good orange juice, since Crete has wonderful fresh fruit. Also, it would be nice if coffee could be brought to each table in a carafe instead of having to get up to refill your cup each time. Minor issues though, to be sure, and the breakfast was more than adequate. The woman who ran the breakfast area was very pleasant. The view from the breakfast area was fantastic.
Stefanos Village appeared to be the most up-scale hotel in the area. It is family-run, and everyone was very helpful. The design of the hotel was very charming, and we enjoyed our stay very much and would love to return. Mirthios is a wonderful village to relax in for a few days. Highly recommended. Be sure to try the various taverns in the area for dinner, which offer fine views as well.
Stefanos Village = the BEST place in the Mirthios area.

Room Tip: We requested a junior suite with a panoramic view of Plakias Bay. We were on the 2nd floor.

Stefanos Village takes full advantage of its elevated location with stunning views of the coastline and sea from the private balconies of the well equipped and comfortable apartments/studios or from the infinity pool. The apartments and studios are all individually designed, and set into the hillside on the edge of Mirthios Village, which features four quality tavernas, all with panoramic views, bettered only by the hotel restuarant/taverna. The hotel is family owned and managed, with a strong commitment to providing high quality, friendly and customer focussed services. Whilst the local tourist trade has clearly suffered in the current economic climate, Stefanos Village is bucking the trend, with around fifty per cent of its visitors being return customers.

Room Tip: All of the rooms have unrivalled views and are well equipped. The apartments are obviously slightly larger than the studios. Some of the more recently completed apartments have been finished in local stone and are particularly attractive.

We had 5 nights here and we could not have found anywhere else in the area that could be better. get a room with a view and you just want to sit on the balcony all day. It is fun as it is designed like a small village and
though on first impression we thought the room was dark we really appreciated it after days in the sun. We were in a junior suite and had so much space. every detail was immaculate - flowers, little bottle of raki, bathroom soaps etc. and a great shower. the kitchen area was so good we drove down into Plakia every night to the supermarket and cooked our own meals to eat on the balcony. The breakfasts were definitely the best we had on our 5 week holiday in crete and the Cycladic islands. They were on this sunny terrace and all the yogurt/bread/cheeses/ etc. etc. were really fresh and lovely. there were two tavernas to walk to which wee highly recommended but we did not use them. It is helpful to have a car as the 20 min. trek downhill into Plakia is no problem but it is a very steep walk up. also explore the south of the isand which is beautiful. If you want a nudist beach the nearby Damnoni beaches are beautiful.

Room Tip: pay the extra and get a room with a balcony. otherwise might be dissappointing

We stayed at this little family-run hotel 2 weeks and were sad to leave. Can highly recommend this place!

As mentioned in other reviews, the location of this hotel is its major asset. The personal and friendly service of the staff, the home cooked food and the nice room made the experience perfect. Our overall feeling was that we felt like visiting family, without having to chip in with work!

We very much liked the refreshing pool with views of both Mirthios and the whole of Plakias Bay. There were always enough sun-beds for guests wanting to use the pool area; no annoyances with 'towel claims' here! Shade was always present in the bar area, also directly adjacent to the pool; a nice place to read a book.

The design of the hotel is such that the rooms are built as small appartments. Many rooms have a balcony or small terrace with a view, beautiful. Note that some rooms, probably the cheaper ones, do not have the panoramic bay view. We really recommend to spend a little extra on the room; the view and sense of space that it gives are worth it. We had two different rooms during our stay and these were equipped with TV, water boiler, coffee maker, fridge, kitchenette with electrical cooking plate, glasses, plates, cutlery, etc. Note that there is no WiFi in the rooms; free WiFi is available in the bar next to the pool and lobby areas however.

The bar offers a range of drinks and snacks for reasonable prices. The lunch menu offers various salads, Greek pizza and a club sandwich. Some reviews mentioned the unavailability of the staff at the bar. The bar is indeed not manned all the time, and for ordering we sometimes had to make a few steps to the lobby or restaurant area. Although this sounds like a lot of work to some, we actually enjoyed it, as you did not have to feel pressured to consume something when sitting at the terrace. It again gave us the feeling of visiting family, instead of being in a hotel.

It's possible to have dinner at the restaurant (either by booking a half-board stay or on ad hoc basis) which is served in form of 3 course menue (not buffet style). It's typical Greek home cooking and very yummy!

The hotel was mainly frequented by quiet couples from Germany and the Netherlands but also had some guests from Italy, France, England and Scandinavia during our stay.

It is not a place for action or for getting to know a lot of people when travelling on your own, and also not suitable for little children since there is no non-swimmers swimming pool.

Staff was very friendly, always accessible and helpful. The girls running reception and the restaurant speak good English as well as some German.

Mirthios is a very small and quiet but charming place and has 3 tavernas. We found it a better base than Plakias but it is essential to have a car to get to the beaches or to explore the island. Several nice beaches can be reached by car in 5 to 10 minutes. Plakias is about 5 minutes by car and has several mini-markets, ATMs, a butchery, baker shop, etc. and a number of (touristy looking) restaurants (we did not try them, so cannot comment on their quality).
