Been there 28aug. - 04sept - me, my wife and our grandson of 6. Had a very good time! Accomodation, food and service very good. Rooms clean. Internet availability sometimes irritating - poor Wifi coverage and rather slow. All the facts desribed earlier by "274856Michael" are true - but for us not too bothering... As for price - depends when You book. We paid ca 1600€ for a week for 3 (breakfast & dinner). I would give them good 4*...

This was a last minute getaway, so the options for picking the hotel were limited...
And yes, I chose Greece, Crete, as it was close, and yes, I know that the level of hotels and service in Greece should not be rated in european terms.

But the thing is, that 1) it theoretically has 5 stars 2) it has really good ratings on trip advisor and holidaycheck - and I highly disagree with these opinions.

The Minos Mare Royal (MMR) is an add-on hotel to the Minos Mare Hotel Complex (MMH).
MMR is simply a new building built on a small piece of land of MMH.

There is no physical division between the hotels. MMR has its own building - therefore it has its own small reception, dinning room etc, but all the other facilities are shared with MMH. You can argue that MMR has its own small swimming pool, but there were no limitations for the MMH to use this pool. This pool is placed between the rooms of MMR and MMH, therefore I can't say that it's private.

If You decide to go out of the hotel, until You reach the main road in Platanias (where You have some shops, bars, restaurants - nothing too fancy though) You will have to walk a dark street with limited lighting, passing by the way a few dumpsters, dogs and goats.

Also what You see on the photo in trip advisor of the hotel, is the MMR and the theoretically "private" swimming pool. But if You would widen the frame to the right - You would see the rooms of MMH.

You have to walki for a few minutes to get from the MMR to the beack. Some rooms of the MMH are located closer to the beach, than the rooms of MMR.
The MMR advertises itself for having a private beach. True, but... other people may rent out sun-beds dedicated to MMR. The sun-beds and sun-umbrellas are in a good and clean condition, and are situated in such a distance from each which gives You moderate comfort.

But beware! THis is a smokers beach. Each umbrella has an ashtray attached. At any given moment at least two people were smoking in the proximity. Due to the moderate distance between the umbrellas (and therefore sunbathing people), this could be found quite annoying.

One more thing. The beach is partially sandy, partially with rocks - I strongly advice You take suitable footwear when going swimming.

If You take the (not)All-inclusive package, You shall get breakfast, lunch and dinner... and a strange combination of all-inclusive possibilities.

Breakfast is served in the same dining room as the dinner, which is in the dining area of the MMR. This dining area has a patio, which has something about 12 tables. Naturally not everybody can fit on the patio, but the rotation is quite fast, so worse case scenario You'll have to wait (especially during dinner) for maximum 10 minutes to get a free table.

The food is boring, especially compared to what even the local Platanias restaurants have to offer. Not to mention fantastic food in Rethymo (i'll do a separate review of a great restaurant in Rethymo later).

Theoretically the dinner is a'la carte, which in MMR terms means - go get Your starters Yourself; the soups - there are two each day - go get them Yourself also; main dish - You can pick one of 3 - this time we'll bring this to your table.

Be aware. The outside patio permits smoking. Taking into consideration that the patio is quite small, You may end up inhaling smoke fumes during Your breakfast or dinner.

Sometimes, when it came to the ending hours of breakfast or dinner, You could notice the staff sitting at the same places the guest of the hotel. They ate breakfast and dinner exactly like the other guests.

If You have the (not)all-inclusive You may eat lunch... at the MMH.

The room is tidy, kept rather nicely clean, but it is quite small. To place Your stuff You have only 1 (one) wardrobe with 1(one) shelf. Apart from that You have 4 coat hangers, and a 2 shelves (under the coat hangers) for Your shoes. THe rest of Your wardrobe has to stay in the suitcase.

Air condition works only when the keycard is in (i find this normal), but also when the balcony door is closed. You open the balcony door - poof! - the AC goes off... So You close the balcony door, go back to the steering unit, turn on the AC. Also the air comming out of the AC was a little bit unfresh.

The minimum temperature of the AC is set to 22c. Therefore if You set it to i.e. 21, it will go automatically back to 22c in a few seconds. You can however set a temperature of 23 or 24.

The nigtstands have no drawers. Actually there are no drawers in the room.

You can hear EVERYTHING from the corridor.... and there is this small door, allowing You to connect to the room next door. This door blocks the sounds better than the main room door, but You still can here what is going on in the next room.

Balcony - You see there is a car wash around 500m from the hotel. They use these compressor water guns which make a noise. This can be annoying if You want to sit on the balcony, or have a day-nap, even with the balcony door closed.

It's slow, It's dramatically slow, sometimes it speeds up, but You can't really count on it. Even when You are on a cable in Your room. We tried 3 computers - sometimes it simply didn't work, nor wifi nor the cable.

The reception was very helpful and kind, the cleaning ladies always presented the room in a great condition. Two barmen were also kind and helpful. The service during breakfast and dinner was poor. Sometimes I had the feeling that the staff was working as a penalty for something.

The staff was badly trained. It worked rather on the idea "let's run a hotel!" rather than on some really thought through hotel standards.

One time, when eating (and paying cash – as the all inclusive didn't work at the hotel owned beach bar) - I had to go to the counter and pay myself as I waited so long for the bill to arrive.

Another time, the diner was organized in the beach bar instead of in the dining room. We came late but still during the "opening hours". We got our food, but we didn't manage to finish the food, when the staff (around 10 people at once) begun packing the tables for the night. Quite funny actually – when You see tables disappearing around You, and something that reminded a restaurant, ended up in being a lonely table surrounded by darkness.

I never liked the concept of all inclusive. Not because it's not fun, but it never really worked in any hotel (maybe in egypt, but it was a supreme all inclusive i had then).

What do You get when You take the all-inclusive. An armband (i hate them, managed to easily persuade the reception to apply it loosely on my hand so I could take it off anytime).
Next You do get free water, cola, fanta, sprite, normal orange juice at the bars (not the beach bar). Sometimes the beach barman allowed us to take drinks from him. But most of the times, You would have to walk from the beach to the bars next to the swimming pools to take Your drinks. You did however get a 20% discount at Your purchase on the beach bar with the all inclusive.

Milkshakes - You have to pay, Ice-cream – You have to pay. Most drinks You have to pay. In the evening however You have the generosity of two times picking one of two drinks of the day – that's all inclusive. Each next or other drink – You have to pay.

The mini-bar is also not-all-inclusive, and i'm not talking about the alcohol, i'm talking about orange juice and coke.

We paid for two people (flight, insurance, transportation included) the equivalent of 2000 Euros, I simply believe that this hotel is not worth that kind of money.

Also since the MMR is connected to the MMH, and therefore You shall coexist with the overall facilities and climate of MMH, this does influence Your perception of the standard of the MMR (by lowering it).

I would rate the MMR as a very strong european standard 3 star hotel. I used "very strong 3 star hotel" as I would never give it 4 european stars.

Minos Mare Royal on the whole was a very nice hotel. Rooms were spacious with nice decor and cleaned daily. We were staying on B&B basis. The breakfast choice was excellent and of high quality.
Reception staff very friendly and helpful. We had booked via booking.com and paid for pool view room, on arrival we were shown to road facing room but reception sorted immediately. If you like days on the beach this hotel is great, beach is literally at the end of the gardens and has a private section with free sun beds for Minos Mare Royal guests. The beach bar for food was excellent and very good value. We were disappointed with the pool area, although nicely decked with single row of good quality sun beds it is totally surrounded by buildings which means shaded at points during the day with no real room to move beds, however pool toilets and showers were probably the nicest and cleanest we have encountered.
Platanias is a very small resort with a few basic restaurants and a couple of good bars. Retheymon old town is 5k away and is far the better option for evenings, only 1.20 Euros on regular bus service and 8 Euro for cab. It is really pretty with cobbled streets and lanes with a great choice of restaurants, great atmosphere and mix of shops, it is well worth the trip in the evenings.
The only negative point was the advertised gym was non existent, just a ropey old bike and a couple of weights. If you like to be surrounded by fellow country men this may not be for you during our 10 night stay we did not encounter any other English guests the majority being either French or German.
Another point to note - we booked our airport shuttle bus transfer via Travel Republic who use A2B this was a real low point taking over 2 hours for both journeys, going way out of the way dropping off and picking up at random locations but I guess you get what you pay for (shuttle bus was cheapest option) if you can stretch to a cab I highly recommend.

It has been wonderful to stay in such a great hotel. The rooms are incredibly comfortable and modern, the pools and beach are delightful and the employees were extremely nice.
The buffet, both for breakfast and dinner, was remarkable, and the greek cuisine was great.
We will be back!

The real problem of the hotel is a wi-fi as you can use it only near the pool. You may ask for the cable to use it in your room but the speed is terrible. The breakfast is good but the dinner is poor. New renovated rooms are good equiped. We had a room on the 1st floor with a big problem of the smell of the stucked water in the bathroom. Beach Towels you may change only from 13.00 to 16.00 so if you come later you will not change them. The sea is storming (3-5) and permanently the red flag was shown. The territory is narrow and small+connected to the nearest hotels. And there is NO sea view! Only side sea view only on the second floor but also there is a parking opposite the windows. And at 5 o'clock in the morning the touristic busses come there and making a u-turns.
