My wife twisted my arm to go on holiday. Given that she is also budget conscious, Greece and Crete especially came to be a logical choice. Having never been to Crete before, locations and hotels fell into the category of "suck it and see". We booked a package deal with Olympic Holidays, not something we normally do, we tend to be more of the independent travelling clan.

Crete was simply wonderful. Not only a very picturesque part of the world but an island that is populated by very friendly and helpful people. This was keenly evident in the Nefeli Hotel. I was pleased with the quality of our accommodation, it easily exceeded expectations...but the icing on the cake was the hotel staff. They were so friendly and helpful...from reception right the way through to the kitchen porter. I would happily highly recommend the Nefeli Hotel to friends and family. A great holiday made by having a first class base.

I returned to this hotel after first visiting the year it opened (late 80's). The service and friendliness of the staff is just the same. Great pool area and rooms spacious and clean and overlooking the pool.

Close to the beach and also plenty of shops in the local area as well as resturants. Short bus ride to the busy town of Rethymon where there are loads of fish restuarants around the harbour and also museums and the fortress to visit.

Food and facilities were brilliant. Will certainly return again.

The hotel itself is Ok (seen worse) Our first room was at rear of hotel overlooking the bins no view and a tiny balcony .Not that you would want to sit looking at the bins....We complained and to be fair they moved us quick enough to another hotel for one night...next day we moved back to Nefeli
The second room ...tiny balcony again only slightly better view... Put up with it as all this messing was eating into our holiday..

My advice ...Don't go half board... food same almost every night and a bit hit and miss. One major annoyance there is no drinks available with evening meals. unless you pay for them youself..this includes water...yes you have to pay for a glass of water with your evening meal!!!!

breakfast they supply fruit juice but this option is cordial not fresh juice.. tea coffe also supplied .

The rest of the guests where all German. I think we where the only English couple. The TV is German except for BBC news chanel. TV in Lounge always on German channel...not a problem dont do much TV on holiday. books available to borrow all german. as usual some germans are ok some are not the happiest people to spend 2 weeks with

Now for the good bits The staff are amazing the hotel is clean and handy for everything you need including beaches.. 3 mins walk . I think if you get a decent room and eat out at night its a grat hotel.

Room Tip: Make sure you demand a good room

We are a couple 21 and 20., Just back from Nefeli Hotel for a week now and just want to go back. Me and my partner aren't very fussy people to start with but rated this hotel very highly! A little hitch when we arrived at midnight on our first night,we got put in a room that overlooked a car park and main road and was very noisey on our first night arriving. When we woke the next morning we asked down at reception to be moved and the staff were very friendly and moved us to another room within hours of asking, which we just absoloutly loved! air con in the rooms, a small fridge, cleaned every day (apart from sunday) and towels changed every day. The pool area was very quiet which we enjoyed because most of the time we got the pool to ourselves (the pool was cleaned regularly of what we saw). We were half board and the food was a good standard although we felt the food catered more for other countries other than British, however we did eat here every breakfast and most nights for tea. Apart from my partner and I and another lady we were the only people that spoke English the rest of the people staying their spoke another language (mostly German) but we liked this for piece and quiet!! There are plenty of bars round about, ! bar straight across from the hotel we visited every night as the stuff were so lovely (and of course Euro 2012 was on, much to my partners delight). Food is very cheap round about, a bus is on offer to go into the main town which only cost 1.50 euro. Beach very close and lovely, do need to pay for your loungers but buy a lilo at lidls nearby and just pitch up on the sand! Place is lovely for a very quiet get away with a pool, sea and sun! Fab! Be prepared for a long bus drive to the hotel though, takes over a couple of hours but worth it! TAKE US BACK!!

Booked a very last minute week half board at the Nefeli Hotel in Platanias, Crete.
As it was so last minute I was expecting the worst.. but was very pleasantly surprised.
The hotel is in Platanias which is a very short distance from Rethymnon (a short drive or bus ride) and took approx 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours from Chania airport.
The hotel is very clean and modern The staff are professional and helpful.
We initially checked in and went to our room which was at the back of the hotel - the room was fine (I was pretty chuffed!) although it was twins beds, but when we opened the curtains to view our balcony we were gutted - the room overlooked the carpark and main road so was noisy and not very pleasant. We don't have any outside space at home so were looking forward to being able to sit out on the balcony. We asked the receptionist if there was any chance of changing rooms and they told us to come and see them after breakfast as they had some people leaving.
The next morning we did just that and they gave us the key to a new room without any problem. The new room had a double bed and a (tiny) balcony away from the road. You could even just about see the sea above the rooftops -we were very happy with this result! The room had a nice bathroom with shower only. The shower was great and never had a problem with lack of hot water - at any time of day. Also there was remote controlled airconditioning at no extra charge. You could pay for a safe for about 10 euros if you chose to.
The food was ok but not great. It saved us a fortune on eating out because the exchange rate was terrible when we went and Crete is no longer cheap! greek salad 5 or 6 euros, frappe or cappucino 4 or 5 euros, main dishes from 6.5 euros upto whatever you choose. The only thing cheap that we found was tobacco, everything else is like England.
Back to the food which is buffet style.. breakfast choice: bread, rolls, jams, hams, tomatoes, peach slices, scrambled or fried eggs (sometimes with sausage in it), cooked tomatoes, various types of sausage, bacon, + selection of cereals.. not all at the same time - they varied day to day. Evening meals had things like moussaka, pasta, ratatouille, stifado, various vegetables & styles of potatoes.... Desert was my fave; with baclava most nights + fresh fruits, blamonge or jelly, sweet pastries etc. mmmm
Platanias itself is ok. Plenty of tavernas, restaurants & shops, but no real focus to the place. Best to pop along to Rethymnon which has a little harbour and an old town with 'quaint' narrow streets to wander about in.
You can book coach trips to all the hotspots. For example it was 30 euros per person for round trip to Knossos (old palace & ruins). We tagged along with some people we'd met at the hotel who invited us along with them - they'd hired a car. Knossos is worth a look but a bit strange because the guy that spent a lifetime unearthing the palace has 'rebuilt' it in part, so most of what you are looking at is new. If you go I 'd recommend a tour guide to understand what you're looking at. I've tried it with just a guide book and it was rubbish. Took the guided tour this time & much more entertaining!
After being driven to Knossos I got up the nerve to hire a car myself. They had some great end of season deals and we got a little Kia Picanto for about 75 Euros for 3 days.
Hiring a car made the holiday for us. We avoided the motorways and drove up in the mountains.
A recommended route if you choose to drive is: Arkadi Monastery followed by Margarites village finishing up with the Melidoni Caves.
It's also well worth a drive to the south of the island. We drove down to Plakias. The drive was brilliant, if a little hairy at times - lots of hairpin bends up and down the mountains!
Overall a great holiday & if we were in the area again we would stay at the Nefeli.
Many thanks to all the staff at Nefeli Hotel who were extremely helpful at all times & friendly. :-)

In Platanes not Platanias, (some of Google/hotel maps are wrong) this is a distance from Heraklion airport DO book transfers unless you are hiring a car, (taxi =80-100E!). Welcoming and friendly staff, room service most days but 'Sleeping/Clean' reversible tag on door so you can choose. Room fine and cool, World news on TV, Safe in room 10E p wk, + fridge extra cost but as room cool and I was 1/2 board I didn't need it. Found the food great, buffet style - tasted lots of Greek dishes and learnt some tips, avocado, orange and dill now go into my salads at home. Always a choice of at least 4 main dishes and different veg at dinner (evening) in the 2 weeks I stayed I rarely ate the same menu, the chef does brilliantly to present varied, hot and tasty food for so many. Bus stop + nice beach across road.

We stayed at the Nefeli for a week from the 12th of September. Our first impressions of the hotel on arrival were good the hotel appeared clean and reasonably modern. We booked half board with the intensions of only eating breakfast in the hotel and an evening meal maybe on one or two occasions, however after seeing the buffet on the first night I was glad that we had not budgeted to only eat at the hotel as the food represented that of a bad motorway service station!! (Breakfast was the same). The room we were given was at the rear of the hotel, this was very noisy as the rear of the hotel is only 20 metres from the national motorway and Greeks seem to like beeping there horns at 4am. The skips are also at the rear and these are emptied daily at 6am. Platanias is an ok resort with Rethynon just a bus ride away with many good restaurants. I would recommend this resort but not staying at this hotel.
