We stayed at the Minos mare in June 2013 to attend our son's and daughter in law's wedding which was held at this hotel. Everything about the hotel was perfect, I have nothing negative to say about it, the wedding was fantastic and you could not wish for a better venue. All the staff are really helpful and friendly from the cleaning ladies to top management. The pool bar prices are reasonable and cheaper than some of the bars in the village! The food is fine if you are willing to try different things and when I'm away I do so that was O K but my husband was not so keen on some of the menus available. The pool is spotlessly clean and there are ample sunbeds to use around it. The rooms are cleaned daily with fresh towels provided each day, beach towels also available. There is a fridge in each room which is really handy, tea and coffee facilities also.

The village itself is not too bad a couple of small supermarkets, lots of touristy shops and loads of bars, tavernas etc. There is a Lidl supermarket which is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Buses run regularly from the village to Rethymnon at a cost of 1 euro 20.

I would definitely, and hope to, return to this hotel. I would also like to mention Costos from the beach bar, Yannis from the pool bar and Pisti who worked on reception just three of the many wonderful staff.

Room Tip: Try to avoid rooms 201, 202, 203 as these rooms are above the kitchen and are really hot even when u...

This hotel is really nice and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room decor was a bit dated but the bed was comfy, the room was a good size and the bathroom was large with toiletries provided. The rooms are cleaned daily and each room has a balcony. The breakfast buffet had a large selection that varied every morning and the it was the same for dinner, although drinks were not included in half board.

There is a large pool with a second indoor pool and the beach is literally steps away from the hotel. There is a restaurant on the beach that provides excellent food and the hotel provided us with a 10% discount for it when we checked in. There is a giant chess set, games room and table tennis table as well as a children's play area and plenty of seating and sun beds on the premises.

The hotel is close to a bus stop which takes you to the city and there is a Lidl within walking distance to buy supplies. There are plenty of restaurants close by as well and some touristy shops. The tips I can offer are not to go at the end of October as the weather was very unsettled, and be specific that you are staying at the Minos Mare as there is a separate hotel called the Minos and there is also the Minos Mare Royal.

everything was really very very good! A lot of interesting trips, friendly people and the staff, god tasty food, quiet and comfortable room. may be the pool is too small (there were a lot of children and woman-seals, but we didn't use it))

Had to write a review as this is possible the best hotel I've ever stayed in, and I've been privileged to stay in quite a variety! The staff make your stay so comfortable & welcoming. Nothing is ever too much for them. We had superior rooms looking out over the pool & they were spotlessly clean & beautifully decorated. The food was amazing, never got bored of it and there was always a variety on offer. I would wholeheartedly recommend anyone to go to this hotel. I absolutely loved it!

Many Hotels claim to be 4 star and "on the beach" but this one really is, the beach is sandy but there is a lot of pebbles at the waters edge and a steep slope and a few rocks in the shallows, Rock shoes are a good idea. They have a board walk down to the parasols and sunbeds by the sea. (charged at 2 euros 50 per bed per day). See Hugh Laurie (well he looks like a younger version) for payment. Transfers from Heraklion took us 1.5 hours depending on number of drop offs, but gives you fabulous views along the coast, dual carriageways are good but in town very potholed and in places we drove along rough gravel tracks to some hotels. The the Minos Mare staff all seem to speak English and are very friendly especially Menelaos on reception, who will go out of his way to help, Izabella in the restaurant and the lady who restocks the buffet, who seemed to be there at every mealtime. My only gripe is that there were no included drinks with the evening meal, you have to buy water, wine, coffee or whatever, at breakfast, drinks were served. The food is good quality, fresh and plenty of choice, it is buffet and you can take all you want. Although full, there was no fighting for seats or sunbeds, plenty for all, no queue for drinks or food, Beach towels are provided with a refundable deposit but you can change them as often as you like, rooms are made up every day with a change of linen alternate days, the shower was over the bath and was basic and a bit shabby, worked fine but not up to the standard of the rest of the room . A kettle and tea/ coffee making facilites a fridge, satelite TV DVD CD and radio alarm bathrobes and slippers all provided, our room had a balcony overlooking the pool and had a glass sliding door a sliding shutter and an insect screen, all individually lockable. The rooms and corridors are carpetted and seem well insulated from each other we had no disturbances at all in our week, a first for us! Free WiFi available in the reception/ Pool area was very patchy and mostly unuseable. The hotel is kept very clean and the trees and grass areas take away the glare of the sun round the pools, and while we were there we saw very few bugs or creepy crawlies only a couple of moths. On the site round in the "Royal" area, there is a small souvenir shop that sells water, batteries inflateables and almost anything else you might need and is very well priced, NOT a rip off!
One problem with flying to Heraklion is that the clubbing centres of Malia etc share the same planes so you do get the rowdy teenagers on the plane, but if you can ignore them for the 3.5 - 4 hour flight the destination is worth it!
I recommend taking a leisurely 5 mile walk to Rethymnon one day, stopping at various Tavernas on the way it will take a couple of hours each way depending on how much coffee/mataxa you drink, follow the seafront along so you dont get lost, head for the Fortress (You can see this building from the beach at Minos Mare) lots of steep steps up to it but for 4 euros you can spend all afternoon exploring the 16th century buildings ramparts and Mosque and learning the history, looking out over the turquoise sea and the terracotta rooftops. Look out for the replica Galleon in the harbour below, that sails around the bay, makes an amazing photo opportunity. Overall an excellent holiday and I would like to return.

Room Tip: We did pay a little extra and got a pool view room on an upper floor room 230 or 229 ideally. The l...

I stayed at the Minos Mare last year. It is a wonderful place for families. The breakfast is included with a variety of goodies to eat. The pool is large with a DJ and water aerobics.
The bar is next to the pool. In fact, you can sit in the pool and have your drink too!
The beach restaurant has really good food. The beach is clean and the water is crystal clear. Make sure you book a trip to Knossos, and also a trip to Chania. The tour company through the hotel was very well priced and professional.

We stayed in the new part of Minos mare beach resort, the Minos Mare Royal. It's exists from 2008, so its very new. This hotel is a part from the Minos Mare resort, but it's a 5 start hotel not a 4 star hotel. And it's worth it! We stayed a several places in Greece and this is the first time a 5 star hotel in Greece is really a 5 star. The rooms are big and luxurious, and the pool is very nice. We stayed on a Half Board basis. Breakfast was good, on sunday we had champagne breakfast. Dinner is starters and desert buffet and main course is a la carte, there was a lot of variety and it tasted very nice.
If you want to eat out, in the main street there are a lot of nice real greek taverna's (cheap too).
Beachbeds are for the people how stay at the Royal for free, there is a separate area for them. Also there is a bathrobe and slippers in the room and a free bottle of wine and fruit on arrival.
The only thing we did not like was the distance to Rethymnon, it's 4 km. But the bus stop is nearby the hotel. The city is nice, but Chania is much prettier, this is really a must see!
If you plane to got to Chania as well, go to Christina apartments!
