What can we say about Eveline Apartments?!

We have just returned from a fabulous 10 night stay and have been thoroughly impressed!
There are so many factors which make this a superb place to stay to get away from it all.

1) The staff
There are 2 amazing staff members who will always do their best to make your stay as enjoyable as possible and they are Michael and Andreas. Not only do they check you in and out, take food orders at lunch time, play some awesome music all throughout the day at the pool bar - but they also make a mean milkshake and you can beat one of their draught beers in a frosted ice cold glass!

2) The feel of the place
There is a real family feel to the Apartments - everyone seamlessly works to make your stay as comfortable as possible and nothing is too much of an effort.

3) Greek Night
This is a must if you are staying here. For a really good price, you can enjoy some local cuisine and barbecue food and follow that up with some traditional dancing (even with fire!) and it wasn't long before we were wanting to give it a go too - all brilliant fun.

4) The location
The apartments are ideally situated in Platanias. Literally a stone's throw from the local LIDL and a mere 10 minutes to the beach and 5 minute walk to the local bakery, tavernas and cocktail bars. You really will be spoilt for choice as to where to eat and drink as there are so many good little gems in Platanias. Unlike some resorts close by, Platanias is not a pushy place trying to get you in off the street to eat at their place - it is laid back and we certainly didn't feel pressurised to go into any particular place more than any other.

5) The cleanliness
The beds are changed every couple of days, the pool is crystal clear, warm and just what is needed after a hot afternoon lazing by in the sun.

All in all, Eveline Apartments was a superb place to stay. Michael and Andreas thank you for making our stay so much fun and we will definitely be making a return visit in 2014.
Thanks very much!

You will find a very warm welcome and a family feel to the hotel, you are immediately feel part of the family as you are on first name basis with everyone. The barbecue evening was excellant with Greek dancing by everyone in the family, staff and customers, excellant fun even if you just watch. beaches are near by and the hotel is ideally situated for exploring the central and western end of the island.
I have never contemplated diving before, my limit was snorkeling but I was tempted with the on site dive school was a blast, was my first time diving and I thought it was fantastic. You can have a free lesson in the pool to see if you like it first which hooked me.
Big thanks to all at the Eveline :)

We stayed here in early August 2013 and I will highlight the good / bad points as we saw them.

Accommodation Check-in:

This was simple and well handled by the barman Michael. Michael was a really nice guy who always did his best to help. He was extremely busy.

Air con / safety deposit box:

The air con costs 6 euros per day and the safety deposit box costs 25 euros for 14 days

The room:

This is the most basic room we have ever had in Greece. There was a microwave on a shelf near the ceiling. To use it you would have to carry it down and find somewhere to plug it in. The shower was powerful and was sometimes warm. The sheets and towels were changed for the first time after 5 days. The fridge worked well and so did the freezer compartment.

The local environment:

The apartments are 50 yards from the local LIDL. You are also 100 yards from the local motorway. There are people sleeping rough and beggars at the LIDL. There are a few places (maybe 12 or 15) to eat but the selection is somewhat limited. The resort appears to be an after-thought. It was cheaper to eat here than Kefalonia. The dustmen come between 3.00am and 4.00 am on a Sunday morning. We heard them both weeks.

Swimming Pool:

It was emptied while we were there and refilled but we did not see any kind of maintenance apart from that. Most people seemed to ignore the request to shower before entering the pool. The sunbeds (plenty to go round and more) are on grass (unusual) and the ants constantly annoyed me.

Pool bar:

Expensive. The pool table also costs 2 euros per game – double the rate in the resort. Somebody with children had to go and ask for the music to be turned down late at night as the level was designed for the bar users as opposed to the residents.

Check-out:

We had a 12pm checkout but transport to the airport was 9 hours later. We hoped to extend our room but that was not possible as the hotel is now ½ Thomson and ½ Dutch. The people taking our room arrived at 1.30pm and were not Thomson customers. As a result we paid for a local hotel for the last day as we did not want to accept 9 hours of our holiday without a private room with a shower. This was a real downer on our holiday. Another couple with a late flight had a 1 year old baby but had to leave their room at 12pm. This room then sat empty for 2 days. This was totally ridiculous and seemed to be a poor way to leave them without a room for 9 hours. They spent 9 hours in the hotel lobby with their young daughter.

Heraklion Airport:

A very dated place and a very slow process to check your bags in and to have them scanned.

Flight Home:

Make sure if you want to buy food or drinks on the way home you have sterling. Do not pay with Euros. The Thomson exchange rate for using Euros was £1 to 1.56 Euros when the official rate was £1 to 1.15 Euros. A con designed to make money.

Overall:

I would recommend another resort entirely and may even go as far as suggesting another Greek island. To be fair there were also some people on holiday there who are repeat bookers. This place just wasn't for us.

Just returned from a week at the Evelin Apartments, and must say what a friendly place it is. Room was clean and kitchen area looked quite new. Sunbeds are plentiful and situated on grass area surrounded by flowers etc, so very pretty. Lidl is handy, just across the road but doesn't replace the local bakery, which is wonderful. Resort is ok, beach is lovely, 5 euros for 2 sunbeds for the day at Pavlos Beach, 10 mins away from the apartment. Handy little snack bar there too where you can sit under the many trees. Would recommend a bus trip into Rethymnon; 2.40 return, tickets have to be bought before boarding (at the kiosk on the corner opposite bus-stop).
All the food in resort was great and good value. One small complaint; the sheets and towels were only changed once during the week, and no matter how many showers you take you still manage to make them dirty! Also, find the right place to cross the road outside as it's very busy.

We spent a fantastic two weeks here in the last two weeks of July - me, my partner and our two boys (10 and 8yrs). Although we had some small issues with our room, these were sorted immediately and that set the tone for the fortnight - the level of service was simply excellent. Michael and Andreas behind the bar could not have done more to make us feel at home. The weekly BBQ is well worth it with some really good food and the chance to join in with the dancing. The pool is a good size and was well-used by our boys and ourselves. The loungers are spread across a large grassy area which is well screened from the surrounding land and, despite having the main road 200m away, it is actually very peaceful within the complex. We used the Air Con in our bedroom and would recommend it, as you can shut the windows and get a good night's sleep. Outside Evelin, there is a Lidl supermarket across the road and then further shops and plenty of bars and restaurants all within 5 minutes walk. We ate at two restaurants in Platanias which were both excellent. Further afield, we hired a car for three days and went to Knossos (worth braving the crowds and the heat), Water City outside Heraklion (brilliant afternoon, if a little pricey: E95 for four of us), the Arkadi Monastery in the mountains, the south coast (use a SatNav!) and Lake Kournas - all well worth the effort. We also did the Samaria Gorge walk (with proper boots), but booked it via the walking company in Rethymnon and Klados travel, rather than through Thomson - a lot cheaper. This was a really memorable day's walking in breathtaking scenery and with plenty of other walkers (some sporting footwear a bit more suitable for the beach than the mountains!), topped off with a dip in the sea at the end before the ferry and coach back home. The tour guide from Klados travel was very good - full of historical information and practical tips to help you get through the day. Would highly recommend this walk, if you are used to hill-walking in general. It took us exactly 6 hours, as the guide had suggested. Overall, a brilliant holiday - we all want to go back again. If we do, we would definitely return to the Evelin apartments. Simon G
