“Great family run hotel!”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

The experienced traveller will know that family run or independent hotels in Greece greatly varies in quality, and bad surprises can easily ruin a hard earn holiday.

The Axos Hotel in Platanias is as far removed from a dodgy independent hotel as you can imagine! What a gem this is! The hotel is located 7km from the Venitian Harbour in Rethymnon. It is surrounded by tavernas, eateries, bars and shops. There is a Lidl Supermarket only 10 minutes away on foot, great for self catering.
The hotel and rooms are extremely clean. The accommodation are modern, with basic but adequate self catering facilities. Some rooms have very large balconies. There is free wi-fi in the reception area. If your room is near the reception, or facing the Katrina Bar opposite, you will be able to access the internet from your room.
What makes the Axos Hotel great though, is the family who runs it. Everybody is so graceful and helpful! They provide excellent customer care. We were given plenty of advice for local visits and culture that we could easily drive to. They really pride themselves on providing a great service to customers.
There is a pool with plenty of sun loungers. The bar at the hotel is one of the liveliest in the area - but not a problem in term of noise.
The beach is only 5 minutes away on foot. If you have a car hire, the hotel shares a car park with a local taverna, only 30 seconds drive from the hotel front. Very convenient! There is a bus service nearly to the old town.In terms of location, there is plenty to see around Platanias. I would recommend a drive to Spili and Margarites, local monasteries and churches. In terms of beaches, try Baja beach only 3 minutes away from the hotel by car or drive to Bali for a great day out on an attractive beach and fishing village.
We had a great time at the Axos and would happily recommend it to anybody.

We have just returned from 10 days at the Hotel Axos. The family manage to mix professionalism along with a very warm welcome. Our first couple of days there the weather wasn't great, however, we were offered some great suggestions of places to see within an hours drive, hired a car and off we went. We weren't disappointed, there is plenty to see, whether it be pottery & crafts, good food and drink or a bit of culture in the local historical sites.

The rooms are basic but clean, comfortable and functional. The hotel itself is well looked after and clean. The pool area has plenty of sun beds and the pool itself is refreshing. Breakfast, if you chose this option, offers a decent variety. Plenty of different types of bread, a hot bar that changes daily, cheese, meats, fresh fruit, dried fruit, greek yogurt along with some local specialties such as dolmades etc. The hotel also boasts a jewellery shop which I could have been very dangerous in! For the evening there is a well stocked bar where Yanni and the team serve almost every drink under the sun and plenty of cocktails! We happily wiled away a few hours sitting in the bar listening to some good music and watching the world go by. Along with a few shots of the family Raki (whoa!)....

The hotel is based 7km from the old town and harbour which is either a good walk if you are feeling energetic or 8 euros in a taxi. If you don't fancy the trip, there is an array of good local restaurants, they all basically serve the same food so pick somewhere that you fancy eating. Our favourite was the restaurant opposite (Marem), the service was excellent and food tasted great alternatively a trip in to the old town.

The beach is a 5 minute walk, there are plenty of sunbeds so no need to rush out to be the first! Be aware though, for some reason they don't all cost the same for the day. The beach is mostly sandy but is pebbly towards to waters edge so worth taking some suitable footwear if you have it, alternatively you can buy shoes in the supermarket for a few euros.

There are supermarkets and bakeries nearby where you can stock up and all reasonably priced. There is plenty going on in the resort but probably not for you if you fancy clubbing.. everything quietens down at about 11.30pm.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the hotel. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Nothing was too much trouble and the location couldn't have been better.

If you do visit, you may wonder why some of the rooms have names outside them. When they renovated a while ago, they put the names of the people who have returned every year since they opened. If that isn't an accolade, I don't know what is.

My thanks to all the team there for looking after us so well. Will we return... almost certainly!

We have just returned from staying at Axos for a week. As other reviews state this is a really friendly family run hotel and you get the feeling that they absolutely pride themselves on ensuring your stay is perfect but without being in your face about it.
Our room was on the ground floor at the end of the corridor. We had a small terrace/balcony overlooking the road. Although we were this side the road was really quiet, not much traffic, my only comment is that our balcony was on the small side and it would have been nice to be a bit higher up so we could enjoy the setting sun - having said that we did not ask to be moved and I am sure we could have had we bothered. But it was not an issue as the room was a nice size, modern decor, very clean and well maintained - as was the whole hotel.
Breakfast was really good with lots of choice, having stayed in many hotels of similar standard I have to say the breakfast at Axos excelled - fresh baked goods, juices, hot drinks, cereals, meats, cheeses and of course greek yoghurt & honey!
The location is great for shopping, tavernas and the beach which is short walk away. We hired a car so spent most of the time exploring the island and enjoying the breathtaking views from the mountains. But if you don't want to hire a car there are buses which stop in the road outside the hotel.
Would recommend this hotel to anyone as it is fantastic value for money - cannot fault it!

We stayed at the Axos last year and had a wonderful family holiday, the staff were absolutely fantastic nothing was a bother. The family run business is right in the centre of Plantanias and a 2-3 minute work to the beach. The hotel provided a traditional Greek breakfast which we thought was lovely and we would sit int he onstreet bar watching life go by for far to long. the road outside the hotel is busy, but i think all Greek roads are and it was never a problem. the rooms were really modern design and spotless and had a fridge, hob, kettle, etc.

The hotel is on direct bus routes to all the main attractions, we had a hire car for the 2 weeks but rarely used it. The local restaurants are so close and these come to life in the evening (but don't worry no nightclubs or rowdy scene in this resort. We could have eaten in every restaurant but 2 weeks was'nt enough and besides each one had such charm and the Greek food was perfect, they all supplied fruit, cake and ouzo or Raki to wash the meal done at no extra charge.

Sometimes the beach can get windy, but thats what the pools for and you can generally get a sunbed. But wonder done to the beach in the evening and watch the sunset never once feeling worried.

Would we go back? Yes like a shot 100%.

Room Tip: You'll need transport/ transfers from the airport, we got a hire car but rarely used it as the b...

We stayed here for 7 days in june 2013. Me, my husband and 1 year old boy.

First we got a room with a view facing the street in second floor, I asked if it was possible to get a room facing the pool, and the next day we had a new room. Great service, and the pool front room was excellent even if we had to give up our family room with to rooms to and move to a single room.

The reason I wont give this hotel a 5 star is because we where travelling with a one year old and we had requested a baby cot on arrival.
When we arrived the hotel they didn't have a baby cot and it took several hours before it arrived pretty late in the evening. And when it arrived it was a pretty awful thing, it must have been 15 years old or something, extremely dirty and smelled of old sweat. But we used it anyway and covered it with the sheets from the hotel.

The breakfast was great, I payed 5 euros for me and my toddler.
The drinks in the bar was good, and super service as they served it to us in the convenience of our balcony while our little one was safe asleep inside.

I would definitely go back to this hotel.

Room Tip: A pool front room is a great option

Didn't stay here but it was recommended as a good place for a late drink. IT IS !! Had possibly one of the best Margaritas - ever. The bar was full but NOT noisy. A great place to chill and enjoy a drink (or two) in a nice location

I booked this hotel for 2 nights after checking many positive reviews, and actually wanted to stay longer at the end!
We lost direction to get to the hotel by car from Highway as there was no clear sign of "Platanias", but managed to find it. All staff were very friendly, and the room was unbelievably spacious. The bed room was separate room from Kitchen/Living room, and it had very spacious balcony. Our rooms were spotlessly clean, and beds were very comfortable.
Our stay was B&B basis, and breakfast was more than enough. There were variety of choices from cold and hot meals with some Greek spcialities.
There were plenty of restaurants and shops around the hotel, and you can buy soap/shampoo from them (only hand soap was provided in the room).

If you are noise-sensitive person, we suggest you to book a room away from Hotel bar/neighboring bars.
Only one negative point was that no wifi was available in room (available only bar/reception area as is mentioned in their website).

Overall, it was one of the best three star hotels in my life.
