Reviewed 9 September 2013

Hotel:-
Stayed 15th to 29th August 2013 as a family with 2 teenage daughters. Arrived in resort around 1.30am to be met by George and his friend Stuart. After dropping bags and despite the early hours and being slightly knackered, a welcome drink was offered and after taking our seats around the outside bar we forgot how tired we were and settled right into our holiday there and then, suffice as to say we watched the sun rise and forgot our tiredness, what a brilliant start to a wonderful 2 weeks.
I think that sums up the holiday for us, we were there no more than 2 hours and it felt like we had been there weeks already. It really is that kind of place. Breakfast is filling, tasty and buffet style managed by either Joanna or Elsa who are the powerhouses behind the scenes ensuring everything runs smoothy and they do a suberb job. Room was comfortable, with the best bed I have ever slept on in Greece, cooking facilities, a fridge, air con and a safety deposit box. It was kept spotless the whole stay.
No one is imposing, just so so friendly and you can spend your time by the pool drinking frappe,(we drank gallons) or a very short walk away you can while away hours on the beach or the larger pool but be clear if there was ever a problem (there was not on our holiday) George, Joanna or Elsa were on hand to help which is always reassuring.A special word has to go to Violetta who made a mean frappe, was always there with a smile at breakfast and nothing was too much trouble (including us rocking up 2 minutes before breakfast was due to finish on more than one occasion) nothing was a problem.
I was initally surprised to meet people staying there, who have been going to this same hotel for 15 plus years, but after 2 days or so I could fully understand why people would rush back time and time again and I hope to be rushing back myself.
Resort :-
The hotel is on a small private road which is quiet but a 3 minute walk brings you into the resort centre. A large supermarket is on the corner for all supplies and around 15 taverna's dot the main street with small bars and a nightclub/bar around the corner. No noise from the resort can be heard at the hotel. The resort is small compared to other Cretan destinations, so is not as in your face and has a more relaxed feel. There is enough to keep everone more than happy and the food we ate was excellent everynight. If you want something a little more Rethymon is a short 8 euro taxi ride away and is a lovely town with lots to offer both for shopping or nights out.
Facilities:-
Hotel pool very nice well maintained and spotless. For a larger pool there is a short 3 minutes walk and then a lovely sandy beach at the end of the road. Sea can occasionally be a little rough but the beach is well maintained and kept clean.Hotel bar is cosy and well stocked and seating is very comfortable.
Overall:-
A superb holiday which we all enjoyed, made better by this wonderful hotel and it's ability to make you feel like it's a home from home with some great people who make your holiday that much more special. Our thanks to George and all at Bueno, hope to see you soon.

Very welcoming family run hotel. Thank you George, Family and friends who helped things tick over rather nicely without being imposing. Nice touch to be offered a welcome drink of a very, very large Bacardi upon our arrival which set the tone for the rest of our holiday. Our room was very large, perhaps a little basic but typical of other Greek Apartments we have stayed in, it was clean which is important to us. Our room (214) was over looking the small pool which although small for any real swimming was perfect for a quick dip at the end of a long day. Location was just about perfect with a large pool less than 100M away after which was a very nice beach. As other reviews have commented the sea at times could be a little rough but we only found it so on a couple of days. The center of Platanias is 2 minutes walk away all situated along one main road with some very nice restaurants if perhaps lacking a few more bars, music etc... After a long night out we couldnt resist a night cap and a chat at the Hotel Bar before we retired for the night. Rethymnon‎ (well worth a visit) is some 15mins away by bus and bus stop 2 mins from our hotel. Breakfast was plentiful but a little more variety would be most welcoming. To finish Thank You George and lovely staff who always had a smile and time for a chat for what was a lovely chilled holiday and just what we needed!!. Thanks Dave & Yvonne (Gloucester)....

Room Tip: Lovely rooms overlooking the pool, Bar, Road if you dont mind a little chatter from the Bar area.

Stayed here for two weeks in July, nice big room, bedding, towels changed twice a week but readily available if you needed more, cleaners are great, room kept spotless.Breakfast was good with a good choice and you're never too late or rushed.Nice pool which is kept very clean,a little bit small but the big pool just up the street makes up for it,just after the big pool and you're on the beach,150 metres away at most so no hardship.
We found all the staff very friendly and approachable and nothing was too much effort, nice bar area outside to sit and have a drink and a chat in a nice quiet area, only cars using this little road are people staying at the appartments and deliveries. Some really nice tavernas for a nice traditional meal, try the tapas bar too, really nice ! Akropolis bar is a nice place to try,sit and watch the world going by in nice cool surroundings.
Plenty of shops nearby for anything you need(supplies etc) and gift shops.
The beach here is huge,if you go past the sun beds you'll find a spot where it's like being on your own private stretch,it's never crowded, worth investing in some swimmers though, try baja beach too, brilliant pool and its huge, water slides for the kids(and adults) and waiter service drinks !!
Family of 4 costs 10 euros for sunbeds and parasols and you're there all day :-)
We had a great holiday here, met some really nice people and were sad to leave.
We found George very polite, friendly and welcoming, remembers everyone's names from day 1 to the end and always talks everyone, violetta is an absolute diamond, always happy and smiling and chatting to you, everyone likes her !

I had a terrific two week stay at this hotel. Comftable room in a quiet location. Beach just a couple of minuites walk. Very reasonable price for a/c and safe box.
Good breakfast ( didn't moan at my over indulgence of eggs on toast)...
I found all staff to be extremely friendly and helpfull.
I could complain that the ice was not cold enough or that my Bloody Mary was not bloody enough...-)
But as I have no wish to be a moan about everything English man I don't need to bother.
And I have to say one thing about George. I was their and to see George pull 30 euro out of his pocket and offer to burn it to make a moaning Minnie happy. Made my day..
If you want to moan about your ice not being cold enough. Stay at home. If you want a nice comftable freindly relaxing Greek holiday you can be assured bueno won't dissapoint.. Go and enjoy.. To George thank you for getting me a cheap price on my moped thank you for being a past life brother.. I will be back.

Arrived here for a week's stay, 2 bedroom apartment accommodation for 3 people better than expected, UNFORTUNATELY it was occupied (2 other families had a similar problem)

The proprietor who welcomed us at 2am seemed to think that providing an old fashioned twin room with a seriously bad 'put u up bed) in an adjoining but dated building was just what we wanted. No understanding of any unhappiness and insisted on being my best friend - totally inappropriate for a complaining client at 2am!! Did however provide another room down the hall when we insisted, obviously trying to avoid the cost to start with.

The next day complaint to agent got immediate compensation and apology, but no apology from the hotel, proprietor wanted to know at midnight why as his new best friend I had complained!! proprietor wouldn't go away even when asked to!!

On last day, straw that broke the camels back' following long discussions with the agent about serious harassment from the proprietor and all that mattered to him was a 30 Euro charge for the aircon, and blamed me for only being interested in money, his keeness on getting cash included pretending to call the police to intimidate me, but actually calling his mother (the real boss), still no understanding that failing to provide a room on first night was a real problem, or that regularly harassing guests is an issue. Quite an extraordinary performance.

This compound of small hotels, Finikas restaurant and pool /beach bar all owned by the same family is popular and has many good points - BUT for BUENO - George needs to focus on providing the service as offered and being friendly to the guests, ie a hotelier rather than 'a friend'

Beautiful Beach was close by, nice big pool by the beach

Breakfast was fine, generous and well presented in a good room/reception

Pool at hotel is small but functional, somewhat overrun by owners kids at times

Room and appartment was fine, however a variety of minor snags made it far from perfect.
1) Shower entrance only suitable for very skinny people
2) Fridge only chilling not freezing in icebox
3) partially broken and very creaky bed
4) missing curtain in main bedroom
5) no function on TV poss lack of aerial (but not required)
6) light bulb required replacing
None of these serious, but indicative of a shoddy approach to maintenance and snagging.

So overall, could have been a great holiday, but rather spoilt by George and his strange approach to providing a service. I see others have been over booked here. On our arrival overbooking was three out of three. The dutch tour operator departs on Friday and UK arrive on late Thursday night - an endemic problem - BEWARE if arriving THURSDAY NIGHT and beware amicable but inefficient hotelier who breaks his contract seemingly with little concern.

Room Tip: You need aircon to gain peace here, the surrounding are very tightly developed, with aircon and wind...

Arrived at 3am following a lengthy airline delay and were expecting a key left at reception, this was not the case George had waited for us and took us to our room and even offered us a drink at the bar(free) . This definately set the tone for the holiday and was exactly what they portray that you are guests of the family. The next morning (and every morning) we were welcomed at breakfast by Elsa and Joanna ( the owner) who both cooked the breakfast and made sure there was always a variety of fruit, cereals, breads as well as cooked eggs and sausages even though sometimes we arrived at 9.30 for the 8-10am breakfast and they never hurried us out at 10oclock. As Joanna actually lives on site she was often around to chat ,again giving you the feel that you were their guest rather than a customer The studio apartment was large and well equipped , and we paid the extra for the essential air con. The cleaning lady again seems to be around most of the day so as a result the whole place is spotless. Lovely pool with plenty of space to either sunbathe or sit under the shade of the trees when its too hot , as we had the studio directly over the pool we could see how regularly it was cleaned . The beautiful beach is a short stroll away down the "lane" one way and turn the other way and you are at the main road with endless choices of restaurants/bars and shops. About an hours drive from both Heraklion and Chania airports and a short bus ride to Rethymnon. There are plenty of places offering excursions and car hire.
A beautiful restful holiday and would love to return - in fact talking to the other guests there are many poeple who come back year on year

Room Tip: Rooms facing the front of hotel have the morning sun , the ones at the back get the evening sun unti...

The Bueno Hotel and Apartments is a delightful small hotel situated down a quiet side street in the busy resort of Platanias. Turn left and you are about 100 metres from a huge long mainly sandy beach stretching several kilometres. Turn right and a short walk brings you to the main street full of tavernas and shops. We spent 2 weeks at the Bueno in a 1 bedroom apartment at the rear which was blissfully quiet with the occasional bleat from a couple of goats outside. The room was clean and spacious with a small kitchenette with a 2 ring hotplate. The large bed was 2 singles pushed together with 2 extra sofa beds in the next room. There is a good swimming pool close to the sandy beach with a small cafe and toilets. The beach had plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas, (6 euros for 2) but the beach being so large the sea could be quite rough on some days with red flag restrictions. On other days it was beautifully clear and calm. Beach shoes are advised as parts of the shoreline are pebbles.
The old town of REthymnon is about 5 kilometres away and is a short bus ride ( 1.20 euros each way, ladies be aware they can get crowded in the evenings! ) . Bus tickets can be bought at the supermarket but are best bought in bulk as they ran out of tickets for 2 days and its a 16 ero return taxi ride to town. If you can afford it, taxis are very good and plentiful.
Rethymnon is a lovely old town and we spent several evening there. Visit to Venetian fortress and enjoy a meal by the old hrbour!.
We took 2 excursions with Thomson, one to the interesting Knossos Palace, the other a boat trip round Souda bay to a lovely beach with stops to dive over the side and swim in the clear sea. Thomsons excursions have become quite expensive lately and the hotel can make cheaper alternative arrangements with a local operator that are also very good but of course have a three language commentary. We did a long days excursion to the beautiful lagoon at Gramvousa and although it was a 2 hour journey to reach the ferry it was well worth it and is a must-see!.
We travelled with Thomson on a bed and breakfast basis. The simple but very good breakfast at the Bueno had everything one would need, include eggs and bacon or sausages and omelettes. The local yoghurt with honey was absolutely delicious!. All the staff were very friendly and spoke excellent English. George helped with the luggage and in between serving at the bar, saw us off with a cheery wave at the end.
The friendly guests were mainly British, Dutch and Scandinavian.
Platanias has two big supermarkets selling everything you are likely to need, several tavernas, a taxi rank and a bakery as well as many clothes and souvenier shops. We visited several local tavernas and particularly liked Yannis, Finekas (directly opposite the hotel) and the spacious outdoor Myli for a romantic evening. For an excellent pizza and salad, visit the busy Sky Park on the main road, popular with local folk and great for people-watching. Service and food in all these places was excellent.
We had gone with wads of euros following a BBC travel experts warning that credit cards would not be accepted in Greece in the wake of the financial crisis. Nonsense, said the taverna owners, of course we accept credit cards. Indeed, there seemed little evidence of a financial crisis in the second half of September. Everything operated, no power blackouts and the ATMs were apparently working (we did not try them)
Good flights back and forth but Thomson seem determined to charge outrageous prices for food and drink. We bought nothing on the flight home.
A lovely relaxing holiday at the Bueno in beautiful warm sunny weather. We would certainly go again at that time of the year.

Room Tip: First floor rooms at the back lack a good view but are likely to be quieter.
