“The best view of Arenal volcano scenery”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

Small hotel, about twelve rooms, located in a hill in the south shore of Arenal Lake. From there you can take a photo of the Volcano with the lake below, the lansdcape is awesome!!.
Also customers attention was great, with a continental and local breakfast served on the porch. While having breakfast you can see hummingbirds and even hear the sounds of the jungle around, very relaxing.

Rooms are quite big, specially the shower, tidy and well decorated in a Tico style. A couple own the hotel, he is from United States and she is from Costa Rica, a perfect mixture, I think they also live there.

To reach the hotel, you must follow a one kilometer path up to the hill. It's muddy in some stretches, so off-road vehicle is hardly recommended.

Have some cash money with you. We have to pay cash because of a power cut... Cashpoints are quite far away!!

Apart from this, our stay was perfect and we're going to repeat the next time.

Room Tip: Upper rooms are next to the dinning room and the swimming pool. Be at the same level in a hill was a...

Despite arriving in the dark in terrible conditions, and during a power cut, we resisted making judgement until the morning and were glad we did. The view is beautiful and the pool was picture perfect. Sadly, getting to and from the B&B is a real struggle - costing us two tyres on our 4x4 vehicle. With no restaurant within walking distance the nerve-wracking drive up and down the hill had to happen at least twice a day and it was just too much. We would suggest guests visit only if they intend to stay in the B&B grounds for the duration or if they invest the money in repairing the road. Otherwise, the breakfast was good, accommodation clean and Augustin was a great help during our stay. A place for those seeking seclusion.

The views down to the lake, with the pool in the front are amazing. The rooms and the lounge area in general are good. A bit negative is, that they were not 100% clean. We stayed in 2 rooms (the first one was probably the one they need to use when they are fully booked - but all the others are very good and we could change after the first night without problems) and noticed in both some spider webs, old fly screens and bed sheets with some holes. For such a great "hardware" it's a pity that they spoil the Wow-effect with these details.
You need a 4-wheel-drive to get there. And you are also bound to the car if you look for places to eat. Having in mind that some attractions open up early the breakfast could start a bit earlier.
Overall still good, but price-value was better in some other places during our holiday in Costa Rica.
Advise for the day excursion: we loved the Observatory Lodge with the hikes, the restaurant and the birds you could watch from the terrace.

We loved this B&B. Augustin, Gord and Nancy made us feel very welcome and the room was very comfortable. The views of Arenal Volcano and the lake down below are amazing and the sunsets each evening were spectacular. There is an infinity pool to cool off in and lounge chairs and hammocks to relax in after a day of sightseeing. Yes, the road is steep, but just over a kilometre long and very do-able in a car. The B&B is handy to many attractions including the Skytrek tram and ziplines (what a rush), Arenal Observatory Lodge trails, Arenal Hanging Bridges and the National Park trails. We are already talking about going back..

The drive to Nepenthe is long, and in some spots, challenging;but, the views are incredible and there are amazing opportunities for monkey sightings, hiking, waterfalls, relaxation, views of the lake and Arenal Volcano. In El Castillo, John's Pizza is everything it is reported to be and the Art Gallery a delightful visit. We did not meet the owners, but Augustin, the manager was prompt and thorough in all our communications before and during our arrival. There is a nice trail to a waterfall easily accessible from Nepenthe and the neighbor has horses to rent.

This was the best part of our trip! The setting is wonderful - perched atop the hill with fabulous views of the lake & volcano, and a wonderful veranda made for relaxing with its hanging swing chairs and hammocks. This was the owners home until they decided to open it to guests, and so it's feels like you are staying with friends. Great breakfasts and B&B charm.

Despite the many comments about the rocky road, this is a great location - close to Arenal Lodge for hiking, the Butterfly Observatory, the Skytram and the park. So glad we stayed here instead of in La Fortuna!

Room Tip: We stayed in a room, but the cabins have a kitchenette and that might be nice the next time. Friend...
