“Hope you're not scared of Heights”

This is a rental for a select type of guest. First of all have your own rental car, next be prepared to drive a rough road for 45 minutes after leaving pavement( and if you're in Costa Rica you should expect this) next get ready to climb a steep series of hills until you get to the last mile or so when you will climb a really really steep hill to get to the home.

The house is perched on the side of a hill with fantastic views of the lake and Arenal when the clouds lift. The room was comfortable and the bed was good. The cleaning however could be better and for a place marketing it's views it should wash the windows once a decade at least.

DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU HAVE MOBILITY ISSUES. The steps into the house are very steep and a long way up from the drive. It is a round river rock walkway, and very dangerous when wet, which is every day. If you have trouble walking a flight of steps pass this one up.

The owner was a nice guy and pleasant to chat with, he was around quite a bit.

“Stunning Views”

My husband and I loved staying at the Bird song villa. The house and the view makes it perfect for a romantic getaway. The view of rainforest, volcano and lake were surreal. Kelly, the house manager was really helpful and had great suggestions for things to do around. A 4WD is good to have to get to the property. We definitely want to go back to this place soon.

“absolutely gorgeous”

Birdsong villa has a world class view, and there is so much to see and do on the immediate property alone. you can see hummingbirds, toucans, and monkeys without leaving the room. The grounds are landscaped perfectly, and the food and hospitality will make you feel at home.

“B&B with fantastic views, so-so breakfast”
Reviewed 22 March 2015 for a stay in March 2015

Outstanding location up a rough road- four wheel drive a must. The views were outstanding and Birdsong is what you hear. Saw a number of birds and the lake and volcano views are as pictured on the website but even better. Sunrise was phenomenal. Downsides: breakfast was sometimes later than indicated at check in (bring snacks if you are on East coast time) with so-so eggs and toast. No mattress provided for my son despite prior request until the last night - in fairness I didn't call and he made a pallet to sleep on-but it showed up the last night so the request must have been somewhere. That being said the location and setting were the draw and didn't disappoint. Don't miss dinner down the road at Tres Cabras which was super.

“Absolutely stunning view, almost hard to believe.”

My friend and I stayed at Allan's Birdsong Villa last week during our last place we visited in Costa Rica. He is a hoot and a great host. We upgraded to the upstairs loft upon arrival, it was an easy decision. The inside of the loft is spacious and beautiful, and the bed is quite comfortable. It's an interesting space in that it's all very open, including the shower, which while being tucked away in the back part of the loft space, doesn't have a door, so there isn't a whole lot of privacy. Just tell people to stay in the main room while you shower and you'll be fine. The cook that comes in makes a great breakfast, and Allan is happy to offer advice on excursions. You definitely need a 4x4, the drive up there is pretty bumpy but fun in a twisted kind of way. Also, there is a great restaurant in walking distance down the hill called "Tres Cabras," my friend and I ate there one night because we literally ran out of options and didn't know where to eat, and it was lovely.

About the view, it's literally the most beautiful thing I've ever seen! It was almost hard to believe. You can see the lake, Arenal Volcano (which you can't climb up, but you can climb up the one next to it), and another big hill in front with lots of rainforest. We didn't get a chance to take the hike that is nearby as we climbed up the volcano you can climb up (located down the road, at the Arenal Observatory Park).

The only thing I would note, is if you are interested in having a very romantic getaway where you were never disturbed, keep in mind that the manager does live on the premises. Granted, my friend and I were very open to chatting and being friendly with him, as he is a great host, so it was no big deal to us. But if you are staying with a partner, you'd have to maintain a good sense of humor in that there might be some interruptions during your stay, such as the cook, though I suppose you could opt out of that perk. Since the layout is all open, there is no door between the main room and the kitchen. Otherwise, it was a beautiful place to stay, well worth the money, with a helpful and affable host.

“Amazing place to stay, great host, great views, great breakfasts.”

This place is awesome - large, comfortable, incredible 270-degree views of jungle, lake, volcano. Host is extremely nice, helpful, good guy to be around. Breakfasts made in your room are really excellent. This is NOT like a hotel experience - this is not even quite a B&B experience - its almost like renting a house (with benefits). It is WAY off the beaten track/ It is QUIET (except for the birds and howler monkeys. You MUST rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle. It's about 40 minutes from the nearest large town of La Fortuna, about 30 minutes of which is on dirt roads that folks from the US would consider very rough. You REALLY don't want to try to make that drive at night for the first time. You really know you're not at home anymore.

Directions in Costa Rica tend to be a little sketchy - signs and directions tend to lack distance information. Suggest you get there with help from GPS. It's also difficult to put in addresses in many GPS systems, so use the lat/long coordinates:
Lat: N10.418061, Lon:W84.7431060
