“Can't believe we found this place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2013

What had already been an incredibly fortunate and amazing trip to CR, got even better when we stumbled upon this place. With no reservations when heading into the Fortuna area, we stopped at a nearby resort and they were full. The security guard actually recommended Linda Vista and told us to talk to Anna. (When coming to Arenal/La Fortuna area, beware that the Arenal Volcano is not in La Fortuna, it is actually in El Castillo. La Fortuna is actually a not so pretty, kinda crowded town 20 minutes away from the volcano).
Upon seeing Linda Vista sitting atop a ledge of the mountain range adjacent to Arenal Volcano, we thought we had wasted our time as we didn't think we could afford this place. When we drove up the steep switchback driveway lined by tall canopy trees and saw all the private suites, we were even more convinced. However, when we met Anna she informed us that we would be getting a free upgrade to a Junior Suite, a full breakfast, and two free drinks all for a price that is less than what you would spend to stay in a Days Inn or some other 2 star hotel. Anna is Awesome.
The rooms are all made of hardwood floors and ceilings with large sliding glass doors with as good of views of the volcano as you can get (the views are better from the rooms then they are from the hiking trails in the National Park!). The beds are big and comfortable, and the hot showers and Costa Rican coffee were very welcoming at the tail end of this vacation. The restaurant and infinity pool overlook the volcano and lake as well. Breakfast includes juice, coffee, toast, cereal, and your choice of an American breakfast of eggs, potatoes, and bacon or a Typical CR breakfast of eggs, rice, and beans. Both are delicious and get your ready for a day of adventure.
The resort will help you arrange your daily activities for free. There is a lot of adventure just down the road and if you want to visit Rio Celeste or Monteverde, these are both within 2 and 3 hours away.
This trip was very special for us as I proposed to my girlfriend while hiking at Rio Celeste. I had told Anna about my plans and asked if she had any ideas for making our return dinner romantic. She said she would handle it. Upon arriving for dinner just after sunset, we found that she had taken the time to set up a single table on the observatory deck, complete with a walkway of candles and flower petals. She did this all by hand herself and put incredible detail and time into making it all beautiful. She even drove 40 minutes round trip into La Fortuna just to buy my fiance a rose. I can't say enough for how wonderful the staff here is, how beautiful the resort is, or how lucky we were to find this place.

Room Tip: Junior Suites are amazing.

This was our third city we visited in Costa Rica and we immediately understood why Lonely Planet warned us about the touristy nature of the area. Mt. Arenal is quite a sight but along with that there are lots of tourists and the infrastructure that comes with it. We hoped to escape most of the tourism in La Fortuna and found this hotel. The hotel was under construction and the common areas like the restaurant, pool and dining areas made that fact even more apparent. Our room was fine and had a decent view of Arenal but overall, the experience was not very unique. The staff, the menu, the facilities all had a very manufactured feel and felt so plain in comparison to our visit in Turrialba. This hotel is a great place to rest your head, but that's about it.

My husband and I stayed for two nights although I wish we could've stayed longer. The man (I forgot his name) at the reception was extremely welcoming, very polite and friendly. We stayed in the honeymoon suite and the decorations were beautiful; the sheets and decor were changed daily.

The complimentary breakfast was delicious, specially the fresh fruits! There is a restaurant on site and I would rate their food at 4, not the best I've had but not bad at all (it is a bit pricey) however their service was excellent! There is a restaurant in La Fortuna called La Parada, it's very affordable and the food was really good.

The hotel is a little far from La Fortuna but it didn't matter to us because the view to the Volcano and Lake were breathtaking! We loved waking up to that view every morning. We rented a car based on other reviews about the road however I don't think that's necessary, you just have to drive a little slower and it will be fine; they're not as bad as others portray them, then again I live in Costa Rica so maybe I'm just used to unpaved roads!

One last thing that I think is worth mentioning is that the hotel locks their gate after 10 pm if I'm not mistaken (as a safety precaution) so that's understandable, but we were not told in advance; however we found the security guard walking the premises and he opened the gate for us, when we were on our way back we called him and he let us back in. If you're planning to go out late at night, let the front desk know before they leave so they can inform the security guard.

Overall I think Hotel Linda Vista del Norte is a great choice and we're looking forward to stay there again during our next visit.

the volcano facing side of the room was all windows and we woke up to the greatest view. Great staff. The food was really good with a great selection. Brian, the office guy, was extremely helpful and full of advice and quite soft-spoken. Great locale. Great choice.

Hotel Linda Vista del Norte (or as my boyfriend and I came to call it, "staying at Linda's") is built on the wrong side of the volcano. The side that suffered the worst of the 1968 eruption. The side where three villages were obliterated. Don't expect to see much in the area in terms of restaurants, shopping and nightlife (there's nothing). Do expect to see phenomenal views though, that is, if you manage to get there on a clear day.

We booked a standard room but were graciously upgraded to a junior suite with a "volcano view." It was a decent, but musty, cabin with two beds and an unobstructed view on what was unfortunately...just clouds. I'm sure behind it all was a grand view of the volcano and Lake Arenal. Unfortunately, we never saw it. That's the thing with the Arenal area. 9 times out of 10, it'll be overcast and drizzly. It's not Linda's fault.

If you do get that clear day, but don't have the volcano view suite, there are plenty of areas to observe on the property. A restaurant, patio, pool, etc.. The food at the restaurant leaves a bit to be desired, but it's cozy and quiet, and offered a view of Arenal's famous clouds (and perhaps a volcano).

Oh. Important note. You'll need a car to stay here. And a 4x4 at that.

The hotel is located 15 minutes down a rough dirt road, and up a steep, curvy hill.
If you don't have a car, and want to head to town (La Fortuna), expect a long wait and a steep cab fare. We booked a tour during our stay in Arenal, and our tour company refused to pick us up without an additional $60 fee. This place is out there. Don't say you weren't warned.

All in all, decent hotel. Could potentially be an amazing hotel. We just weren't there are the right time to get the full experience.

Room Tip: The volcano view junior suite may be worth it on a clear day.

The Linda Vista del Norte is a really wonderful place! It was my 5th times over there last January and I have to tell that Brian and Anna offered us, as always, the best welcome! The view that we had from our suite was totally amazing! Their new restaurant offered a magnificent view of the volcano and the Arenal lake! The service and food were perfect! And what to say about the amazing feeling when we are in their wonderful pool which offered a perfect view of the Arenal Volcano! We really enjoyed our stay at Linda Vista del Norte!
