We can learn a lot from the french - this is an important part of their history so its free - obviously looked after by the state and paid for by taxes. Everyone pays to ensure that this piece of history is preserved and accessible. Part of Hitler's "atlantic wall" - huge concrete bunkers with guns intact pointing towards the sea. We didn't have much time so just parked up and wandered around taking pictures - if we'd have taken the guided tour that would have only been 4 euros.
