“Nice and convenient "Ski & Dine" Hotel”
Reviewed 5 January 2013

Hotel Riml is one of the few hotels in Hochgurgl, all of them rather high end. Apart from the hotels, there is nothing else there. So if you want après-ski or nightlife, Obergurgl (or Sölden) is a better choice. If you prefer a more quiet type of vacation, keep on reading.

Due to the high altitude, Hochgurgl is snow-sure. Skiing is great and slopes are not too crowded. No waiting at lifts even in peak season. The hotel is located in the middle of the ski resort. Yes, there is a walk up a few stairs from the hotel to get to the slopes. But being at the drag lift or ski school 10 min after having strapped on your boots in the boot room or being on the gondola or chair lift within 5 min can still be called very convenient IMO.

The exterior of the hotel is not it's greatest asset, built in the sixties and expanded over time. However, from the inside it has the typical warm and cozy feel of a mountain hotel, with a tasteful interior decoration and no feeling of tiredness whatsoever.

The rooms are quite different in style, size and location (view). So it's highly recommendable to make sure which room you are booking and which view it has. It's a pity when you are in a place with a gorgeous view, but your room has none (in our case due to a mistake of the travel agent). The interior of the rooms is up to a good 4-star standard. Clean, a full set of amenities and everything in working order.

The service is efficient and professional. The hotel has an extensive spa-area with a large indoor pool, with great views over the valley and mountain range. Like other reviewers, we found the pool too cold, which kept us from going there more often. Below the spa-area is the ski-shop, where all rentals / purchases can be charged to the hotel room. All very convenient.

What really impressed us is the restaurant. The place is half-board, and dinner includes a 5-course menu, and we were looking forward to it every day. The food is excellent. During our 7 days there wasn't even one miss. Everything was prepared to the point. And some dishes were truly outstanding. The restaurant staff were very quick and professional. All not an easy feat when the hotel is operating at 100% occupancy. We also had some lunches from the large à la carte menu, which is reasonably priced. The portions are large and the quality good.
They have a very nice wine list, with prices quite moderate. Try the Austrian grapes like Grüner Veltiner of Zweigelt which are surprisingly good and a great value.

After dinner, you can hang-out in the Panorama bar right next to the restaurant or in the Putt-In bar adjacent to the indoor-golf range where smoking is permitted. Yes, you can smell the smoke, but it didn't bother us although we are usually quite sensitive in this regard.

Well, quality has its price, and the Riml is no exception, especially in peak season. Nevertheless we enjoyed Hochgurgl and the Riml a lot and would like to return.

Room Tip: The rooms are quite different in style, size and location (view). So it's highly recommendable t...

Hotel Riml is a lovely place to visit for your skiing holiday. Everywhere its very nice and clean, staff is friendly and forthcoming, and the place sports a big and well-visited spa, sauna and pool area. You can practice your putting at the indoor golf as well. So definately a decent place to stay, prices can sometimes be negotiated in the middle season, and then it becomes a good deal. Nice and varied breakfast.

There's a few drawbacks though. Hochgurgl doesnt really have a downtown, thats in Obergurgl, 10 minutes away. Free busses runs every 20 mins or so, but if you're after night life or shopping, even for grocery-like items, you have to get a taxi or use the bus. Secondly, Hotel Riml, although the ski-hire is right below the hotel, does have a nasty winding walk to the skilift, and in skiboots, thats a major drawback. Other hotels in the area does have a much more direct way out of the hotel and onto the snow.

Tips: DO get a room with a view, it is really spectacular. DO ask the waiter for "special wines". They do have a secret selection of great austrian reds and whites, don't miss out if you know half a thing about wine.DO use the spa-area in the middle of the day, as it gets extremely busy just before dinner. don't forget, this is Austria so the whole sauna area is nudes only. Its very relaxed and noone really cares, so go for it, the herb-induced steambath or Lacorum is a must.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view!

Just returned from a week at the Riml. Overall, well satisfied with this hotel
Plus points:
5 min walk to beginners' drag lift and ski-able (1 min) to the nearest chair-lift and gondola (inc ski-school kiosk). Ski-pass can be purchased from hotel desk. Can ski back to hotel for lunch.
Altitude means you're surrounded by deep snow, even at the end of April.
Ski-shop on site at the hotel (reasonable rates inc. 10% discount).
Ski-boot room with individual lockers in hotel basement. Yes, a couple of flights of stairs to be negotiated to get out onto slopes, but not a problem for fit skiers.
Nice indoor pool (I found the water temp to be quite comfortable).
Games area with 2 pool tables and table-football.
Spacious rooms with balconies; great views. Single room prices per person same as doubles.
Good quality food and loads of it.
Bar and lunch prices very reasonable (and massive portions again).
Choice of bars.
Proffessional and efficient staff. Friendly but not over familiar.
Negatives: charging for water in the restaurant (is this am Austrian thing?); very irritating.
By the way, this is a fabulous ski area for newish intermediates like us. Loads of long wide blue runs and no lift queues. Scenery is awesome, especially from top-station 3000m+.
Once everything paid for, a bit pricey but worth it for the convenience and snowsure resort. Will probably be back.

We just returned from 2 weeks at the Riml. We went to Hochgurgl since it's high elevation, necessary for late March, early April. Let's see, it's family run so the service was great. So was the food and the spa. And the pool and the room. And the ski rentals worked well. We took nothing except a credit card. And the skiing was great for late season plus great grooming and chair lifts. The only thing is that the visibility was ZERO some days and we couldn't see. Oh well. Still, never had better intermediate skiing anyplace when the sun was out. Our 9 and 14 year old kids loved it. The grooming and chair lifts were superb. We accessed Austria from Munich though we needn't have rented a car. That's the Americans in us I guess. Prices competitive with other area hotels. We'd like to return as we were really bitten by the ski bug!

We have stayed here for the 5th time and it was great as usual. The hotel is not cheap, but the food is really phantastic, the wellness area with various types of sauna, steam bath etc. is really special and the service and ambiance of the staff is commendable. I could not imagine a better hotel in this area.

Stopped here for drinks and lunch. Great place for a sunny day to sit back and relax on the loungers or at a table. Lots of space and great staff. Inside there is a great bar area that does not get too crowded, so also good if the weather outside is not too great.

Haven't got a clue why anyone would not like this hotel. Good food, ski out and in from the slopes with no difficulty. If you can ski you can surely climb the few steps up to the Nursery slope or walk down the road a little way to the 6 man chair lift. Ski hire shop excellent if you haven't got your own equipment. Staff are always friendly and the family Riml are always helpful. Snow guaranteed with the resort being so high. Well pisted slopes.

Room Tip: The rooms on the north side overlooking the nursery slope are more spacious.
