Hotel Riml is one of the few hotels in Hochgurgl, all of them rather high end. Apart from the hotels, there is nothing else there. So if you want après-ski or nightlife, Obergurgl (or Sölden) is a better choice. If you prefer a more quiet type of vacation, keep on reading.
Due to the high altitude, Hochgurgl is snow-sure. Skiing is great and slopes are not too crowded. No waiting at lifts even in peak season. The hotel is located in the middle of the ski resort. Yes, there is a walk up a few stairs from the hotel to get to the slopes. But being at the drag lift or ski school 10 min after having strapped on your boots in the boot room or being on the gondola or chair lift within 5 min can still be called very convenient IMO.
The exterior of the hotel is not it's greatest asset, built in the sixties and expanded over time. However, from the inside it has the typical warm and cozy feel of a mountain hotel, with a tasteful interior decoration and no feeling of tiredness whatsoever.
The rooms are quite different in style, size and location (view). So it's highly recommendable to make sure which room you are booking and which view it has. It's a pity when you are in a place with a gorgeous view, but your room has none (in our case due to a mistake of the travel agent). The interior of the rooms is up to a good 4-star standard. Clean, a full set of amenities and everything in working order.
The service is efficient and professional. The hotel has an extensive spa-area with a large indoor pool, with great views over the valley and mountain range. Like other reviewers, we found the pool too cold, which kept us from going there more often. Below the spa-area is the ski-shop, where all rentals / purchases can be charged to the hotel room. All very convenient.
What really impressed us is the restaurant. The place is half-board, and dinner includes a 5-course menu, and we were looking forward to it every day. The food is excellent. During our 7 days there wasn't even one miss. Everything was prepared to the point. And some dishes were truly outstanding. The restaurant staff were very quick and professional. All not an easy feat when the hotel is operating at 100% occupancy. We also had some lunches from the large à la carte menu, which is reasonably priced. The portions are large and the quality good.
They have a very nice wine list, with prices quite moderate. Try the Austrian grapes like Grüner Veltiner of Zweigelt which are surprisingly good and a great value.
After dinner, you can hang-out in the Panorama bar right next to the restaurant or in the Putt-In bar adjacent to the indoor-golf range where smoking is permitted. Yes, you can smell the smoke, but it didn't bother us although we are usually quite sensitive in this regard.
Well, quality has its price, and the Riml is no exception, especially in peak season. Nevertheless we enjoyed Hochgurgl and the Riml a lot and would like to return.
