The Savegre experience is amazing. While the narrow, bumpy road that is the only way in (or out!) complete with blind switchbacks give one pause (and finger-crossing to not encounter any large trucks coming the other way), the destination is worth it. If you are lucky, you will see the eye-catching Resplendent Quetzal on your approach to the lodge. We were lucky, seeing four of the glorious birds in a tree on the edge of the road.

We stayed for two nights at the Savegre lodge in July on a private guided bird watching trip. The food was excellent--just be sure to ask the chef what the buffet items are as they are not labeled--to avoid any issues. The grounds are amazingly landscaped and offer excellent viewing of hummingbirds and many, many other birds.

The lodge has just build several new cabins, we were in one of them. The only issue was that the walk-in shower appears to not have the right drainage slope and the rest of the bathroom would get wet. The rooms are beautiful, with large picture windows backing on to the private woods, and to the gardens out front.

I did not find the beds or pillows, although brand new, to be comfortable. That was the biggest disappointment.

The wifi is free and available only in the bar/restaurant area. We would bring our own beverages and sit in the outside / covered seats near the bar entrance to check our email.

The lodge is a long long ways from any stores so be sure to pre-purchase/pack what you need.

This valley is paradise on earth! Went for an overnight stay with my friend...stayed for three, and again returned for final last two nights before returning to the UK...IT REALLY IS THAT GOOD.
The accommodation is true five star even with sunken baths, lodges nicely scattered amongst flowers and trees well landscaped to bring in/ encourage the wild life and situated perfectly in the cloud mountains with nature all around in the form of birds of every colour, plants and not forgetting the wild orchids growing everywhere....something for everyone.
We had meals included with the deal...exceptional choices for each...three courses both lunch and evenings...served always with a smile and happy to advise you.
Being a photographer, went on treks with Marino, (the guide) who knew everything about the area, and was always so helpful...especially re wildlife...my friend who lives there had never seen a Quetzal, and my first day there, had seen two....I was truly mesmerised completely with such a wonderful part of the world...and I have travelled extensively over the years.
Hummingbirds are in abundance as they have special feeders and plants specially placed around the site...to encourage many birds.
Let us not forget the Spa...what a great way to really be pampered and come away feeling on top of the world, even relaxing in the jacuzzi we were watched over by five vultures...perfect! Itch a complimentary coffee.
Go there and have the most wonderful time
You will not want to leave.

Room Tip: Any room/ lodge...but 148 is closest to main building...and for those needing internet you have to...

The hotel is right in the middle of a mountain, it is hard to get to a more secluded and peaceful place. The road is not that bad but some small cars may have issues getting there, once you arrive you will see a very beautiful place, birds are all over the place, even the gorgeous Quetzal.
It is common to have some rain at that place but nothing that you can consider as annoying.
The accommodations are like cabins, very private and not that near from each other.
Beware that you won't find any kind of modern luxury in your room, aside from warm water and a heater, no tv, no internet. But even like that we were able to enjoy the place, and silence
At night it can get very cold for those that are not used to it.
Everyone should try the different trails, there are five with different difficulty level, you will need the right kind of shoes and a good physical condition since most of them require a good walk uphill, Some parts of the trails didn't feel that safe, so it is recommended to either get a guide or let the people at the hotel know that you will take a trail.
We were able to see many birds, monkeys and 2 kind of snakes.
I am not sure if a kid will enjoy the place unless interested in nature.
The food is buffet style, not many options but everything was of a very good quality and the fish is a fresh catch from a place nearby.
The desserts were not splendid but acceptable. The bar was very good and they accept request for stuff that is not at the menu. If you want an snack you can ask for one over there and take it to your room, there is wifi at the bar and board games.
The spa is great and any treatment includes the steam bath, sauna and jacuzzi, so the prices are very competitive.
All in all we enjoyed our visit and the chance to be surrounded by nature in a place that is not full of people.

My wife and I spent three days at Savegre lodge in July and loved it. The purpose of our trip was to hike on Cerro del la Muerte. We rented a car from Poas in Alejuela (a good experience). The ride was uneventful except for getting lost for a while in San Jose and gets "interesting" as you descend the steep dirt road into the valley. The accommodations were very nice. The room was large and comfortable. The hotel has beautifully groomed gardens that seem to have been planted specifically to attract birds. We chose not to get the meal plan and had only breakfast included. This worked out well for us. There is a small "soda"(restaurant that does not serve alcohol) and plant store a short walk down the street that served really good food for much less money than the hotel. We had some meals in the hotel and the food and service was very good. The hotel will also pack you a lunch if you are planning to go off on adventures. Most of the visitors here seemed to be birdwatchers. The lounge is very comfortable with a nice fireplace burning in the evenings. You might think that a fire in July in the tropics would be strange but at 7000 feet elevation it was really welcome. Drinks were a bit expensive and I would recommend that if you wish to partake in beer wine or other adult beverages that you stock up before leaving Cartago since there did not seem to be anywhere to get supplied anywhere on the interamerican highway or near the hotel. The first day we hiked the cataratas trail with spectacular waterfall views. The second we took a much longer hike the Robles or oaks trail up into the cloud forest . There are a few nice views of the valley below but for the most part we were in the forest. The entire 4.5 hour hike is on the hotel property! The last hike was from the top of the Cerro del la Muerte 11,332 feet to the hotel. We arranged a ride to the top of the mountain through the hotel and a guide, Raul and I would highly recommend him. The valley around the hotel has been developed to farm things that do not generally grow in the tropics, like apples, peaches, cherries and trout. It is an unbelievably beautiful area and I strongly recommend that if you are looking for something a little off the beaten path in CR you check out San Gerado de Dota and Savrege lodge.

Room Tip: Some rooms are separate cabins with fireplaces. We did not stay in one of these but they looked nice

After 3 days in the jungle, the stop at Savegre was a welcome relieve for out group. After a long drive through the beautiful country side of Costa Rica, we arrived at this beautiful mountain oasis.

This stop was a thrill as we were looking for a sighting of the Resplendent Quetzal and we were in luck. There was a pair nesting just a short hike from the lodge ground. In addidion to the Quetzal, we all enjoyed the many hummingbird species that were feeding at the hummingbird feeders placed around the main lodge.

The cabins were warm and very comfortable. The cool night air was warded off by the wonderful heavy blankets on our beds.

Meals here are served buffet style. There is plenty of variety to meet the dietary needs and wants of the quests.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have fireplaces. This would be really nice if you are there in cooler weather. How...

This wonderful Eco friendly lodge is in the middle of the Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. Getting there from San Hose Airport was an adventure in itself. It was 3.5 hours of driving up (11,500 feet above sea level). Literally into the clouds. We were not sure what to expect. It was magnificent. The rooms are basic but clean and adequate - nothing fancy. Our room had a wood burning fireplace which was welcome due to the very cool nights. The staff was wonderful. It is a family owned business. The vistas are indescribably beautiful. The Savagre river and waterfalls are outstanding. There is a restaurant on site (all meals are buffet) and a Spa - lovely. Our 3 days there were a full 10 out of 10.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a fireplace.

We got a promo from Yuplón (sort of Groupon in the US), two nights for two half price. Which is a great way to attract local tourists who don't mind traveling during rainiy season.

We checked in on Friday, just in time for dinner and checked out on Sunday. The staff is really nice, the food was great and with a very decent price tag, especially for a buffet. The variety was nice and I'm still thinking about the deserts table.

The rooms are big and comfortable with heavy courtains, the beds and bedding were really nice and warm. Except that maybe the bed is a bit too short for tall people, like my boyfriend, who's 1.90mts tall (6'2", I think).

The bar is really nice with a fireplace and since we were there during the World Cup this was a great place to watch the CR-Uruguay match.

Now, we do have a couple of complaints: 1.We don't drive, so before I purchased the offer I went online to look for instructions to get there and found an independant review that said you can take the bus and the Hotel would pick you up at the bus stop 9kms away. This was confirmed when I called to make the reservation, the guy said we just needed to call and let them know which bus we took and they would send someone for us, which we did. This seemed ideal to us.
What no one told us was that there was an additional charge for the ride, nevermind that this is an informal driver with no fare meter. We first heard about it when we arrived at the hotel and the driver asked if we wanted to pay him or the front desk. The fare turned out to be $25 each way and there is no other way to get in or out. For people traveling on a budget, $50 make a BIG difference. A lot of hotels do pick ups and since nowhere on the confirmation email or our different phone calls it was mentioned, I had no way of knowing this was charged. "We'll pick you up" is all he said.

2.The other issue we had was that the walls are very thin. Our first night there (Friday) we were pretty isolated, but the following night we did have neighbors on both sides. We know it because at night we heard snoring on our left and a full conversation on the shower next door to our right the next morning.

All and all, for the half price we paid it seems ok, but I wouldn't want to pay full price for thin walls on top of the pick up charge no one bothered to tell me about.

Room Tip: Ask them to give you a "left side" room (like 102). Those only share one wall and it's...
