We stayed here for three days, two nights. The atmosphere was really great, the garden beautifully maintained, with lots of live and energy. The personnel was most friendly and thoughtful. We have absolutely no negative points here!

Set in the most beautiful valley Trogon Lodge was a wonderful experience. As previous comments have stated the road is steep and winding but the views along the way are amazing and the lodge nestles at the bottom of the valley alongside the river. The rooms and comfortable and spacious and the gardens are a delight and full of birds. The whole place has a feeling of relaxation and the food is both plentiful and delicious. I would highly recommend this lodge.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good and have lovely views across the gardens.

10km down a gravel road, almost to the bottom of the valley and you will find Trogon Lodge. Yes it is much cooler than other areas of Costa Rica and you will need a few warmer clothes. The Lodge consists of beautiful cabins, a bar with a pool table, a reading room, dinning room - all you could possibly need. The cabins are certainly lovely and clean. Meals are variable, some better than others. Breakfasts were good. This is a very quite place, with surrounding forest trails that you can walk. We also went quetzal watching, the guide was magnificent, we would really recommend this. There is no doubt this is a lovely place, immaculate, with very nice staff and we certainly did like it. Perhaps our only concern was the lack of tours/facilities at the lodge, mostly due to the quieter time of the year and therefore the guides not being present. Which is reasonable to expect. However, perhaps if we had known that there would be limited things to do we would have only stayed one night rather than three.

This lodge is situated in a valley on a height of 2300 m and surrounded by mountains which go up to 3000 m. The temperature is around 10 C which implies if you decide to visit this place bring along sweaters and long trousers. The lodges are situated in the valley along a montain stream full of rainbow trouts and a garden full of flowers and birds (Quetzal, hummingbirds etc) The lodges are fully equiped and very spacious. The bathroom has a toilet, sink and nice shower. And although it is not heated it is comfy enough to shower or to wash yourself. The lodge has a ceiling propeller and a gas fireplace and the beds are heated in the evening by the staff who put hot jars in the bed. The porch is equiped with a rocking chair and a bench. The various lodges are situated on various levels and reachable by stairs (for those who have difficulty to walk make sure you reservate a lodge on reception/restaurant level). The restaurant is centrally located and is serving excellent meals. The menu is varied every evening and the cook is flexible enough to adapt to every wish of the client. Besides a small shop for souvenirs, there is also a bar and lounge. There is Wifi as well in the lodges as in the restaurant and lounge.
The staff is very flexible and extemely service oriented. Nothing is too much !

I went with my family near Christmas time last year and we LOVED it.

Access: The access to the hotel is a bit tricky with steep roads and dirt paths, but when you get there, you see it is totally wirth it.
The place in general is a very quiet place and it has a LOT to do or explore.

Hotel: There are not so many rooms (cabins in this case) as ina huge hug hotel. This is a quiet place to relax. There are no TVs. The cabins are close to each other and you have a complete view of the forest from them. Service was fantastic, rooms were always clean and the food was awesome. The place is cold (20-15ºC during day, 15-8ºC during night) so each room has its own little gas "stove" and the common room has a fireplace. You have paths to the cabins surrounded by gardens, tilapia ponds and little bridges. All of the gardes were well kept and tended. In general, the place is beautiful by itself.
The common room has pool, cafeteria/bar, a TV, and comfy couches with blankets, perfect for reading a book.

Things to do: You can go on self guided tours through forest trails and you get to see waterfalls and rivers or pay to go on a more serious tour like horseback riding, bird watching, biology tour, etc. I went bird watching at 5.30 am to see quetzales. Sadly, we only saw one for 5 s, but we learned a lot of other birds and plants from the tour guide. I also went on the trails which were awesome...you can even try to fish tiny river fish (they are really smart haha we could'nt catch one).

The only disadvantage was the medical care. They had only a first aid kit but no medical assistance. Still, the staff was very helpful with any inquiry.

Overall, I highly recommend this eco-tourism hotel. It is a high quality place to stay and really realx.

Room Tip: Just make sure to be careful with the gas stove! If it extinguishes, you'll freeze hehe.

We (family with 8-year-old boy) stayed at the Trogon Lodge for one night enroute back to San Jose from the coast. It basically couldn't have been better.

Breaking up the drive from Manual Antonio by going this direction, rather than straight back to San Jose proved to be an excellent plan. The cloud forest climate, and this little valley, is very beautiful and unique. Trogon Lodge, to my eye, looked to be the nicest of the half-dozen or so places to stay in the valley.

The central attraction is the bird life. You can either get Rambo and get up before dawn to track down the fabled Quetzel, or you can lounge on the deck and watch the hundreds of humming birds while sipping coffee.

The Trogon Lodge consists of maybe a dozen buildings, two rooms to each, built on a hill over-looking a mountain stream. The stream and ponds are stocked with imported trout (as is the menu). the gardens and surrounding are charming and beautiful. There are multiple hiking trails that leave out from the grounds, as well as a small zip-line.

The whole place makes for an ideal stop-over or 2-day visit. After that I'd think you'd run out of things to do in this tiny mountain valley. Bring a jacket. Its chilly sometimes. They warm up the rooms for you every evening. You'll be in the company of dozens of birders, so bring binoculars, a zoom lens, and listen to how many species you just saw. It's fun. The hotel's staff is very helpful and knowledgeable btw. The front desk runs its own birder tours most mornings.

The road into the valley is steep and narrow, if that sort of thing is a concern. Just a basic country mountain road. Go slow, enjoy.

Room Tip: The high rooms have great views, but its a hike for those not used to the altitude. Might need someo...

We stayed here just one night but it was a very memorable stay. Everything- rooms, service, food, views were first class. Greivin and his team are doing excellent job. We definitely wanted to see quetzals when in Costa Rica, but it was not the right time we had heard, so our expectations were low. You can imagine how ecstatic we were when we got to see more than 10 of them flying around. The quetzal tour provided by the lodge was one of the highlights of our holidays in Costa Rica. I cannot recommend it enough. Just go there because it`s too good to be missed.
