The hotel had lots of character and is just off the main square. A very comfortable - and huge - bed in our room under the eaves. Decorated in a very individual and charming way.

The decor was a bit tired and could do with refreshing. Some exposed wires on a plug by the wall; lovely stand-alone bathtub, but not very practical when you wanted a shower. Two handwash basins, but nowhere to put your toilet bags.

Small private parking area, but you need to get there early to find a place.

We didn't have breakfast - it was 17 Euros per person! There was a lovely traditional (French) bakery facing onto the adjacent public car park where you could get a coffee and croissant for less than 8 Euros for 2 people!

But all in all, a comfortable stay.

Room Tip: ask for a room in the main building as there is a modern annex where the rooms won't have the sa...

I generally prefer to stay in modern hotels, so it was rather a surprise to find how much I enjoyed my stay in Hotel Recour, which was furnished with period furniture. We had a lovely room with a very grand bathroom and a balcony that overlooked attractive gardens. We enjoyed the breakfast, which had locally-sourced food. We had a problem with our car, and the proprietor could not have been more helpful in assisting us to locate a garage. The only issue that spoiled our stay, and was beyond the control of the establishment, was that our room was close to the walkway that lead to the breakfast area and hotel annexe, and other guests were extremely noisy, both late at night and also early in the morning. Otherwise, I found this an enchanting hotel.

Room Tip: Upgrade to rooms with a balcony.

When I booked I spoke to a helpful lady and we were looking forward to staying. On arrival we were greeted by an elderly gent who said were we staying for breakfast, a good evening would have been nicer. We went up the tiny slow lift to the room and we walked the staircase as the lift was full with 2 bodies a bag and a case. Our room was dark but nevertheless looked very nice. However upon inspection the beams over the bed meant you would crack your head in the middle of the night if you forgot to duck.
The bathroom looked nice but not practical. The stand alone bath was difficult to get out off and water went everywhere on the cold flooring. Had we had a shower we would have had a flood.
We did not stay for breakfast as we prefer just a croissant and coffee and for about £15 its too expensive.
Around the house were decanters and even had one in our room with about an inch of liquid why!
Poperinge is lovely but when we previously walked around it was market day and had a busy feel but we were staying on a Mon which is always a quiet day which we appreciate.
In fairness it was so quiet in the hotel we only saw one other guest. The whole house appears like we were using the facilities in someone's home with all there own personal pieces everywhere.

We stayed here for a couple of nights. We stayed in the annex and found it very comfortable - we'd read reviews here so it did not come as a disappointment or surprise. The restaurant was excellent - fine dining in beautiful period rooms. It's very near to Ypres and Passiondale (where there's a great museum about WW1 and reconstruction of life in the trenches).

Room Tip: The annex is new/modern so is very different from the rest of the hotel.

Used booking.com, booked 'room with beams' at 4* Hotel Recour, Poperinge. We booked in at Hotel Recour, but we were taken across the road to 'Gastenkampers Recour' opposite a kebab house! A beautiful room away from the main hotel, no beams in sight, which was a disappointment! Checked our confirmation and we had been directed to less opulent accommodation. However, it was still very nice, huge comfortable bed, spacious room but open plan! I mean 'open plan'! No door on the 'loo', although being married in excess of 30 years, one still requires some privacy! For the money we paid we had value, just disappointed we were 'cast out'. The porter/receptionist took a booking over the phone while he showed us to our apartment so why we didn't get the room we booked I don't know. Language was a problem, did show our booking confirmation but his understanding of English was as limited as my Belgique! We were dealt with in a friendly manner, the gentleman was lovely, we were very English and didn't want to cause a fuss. So if it's important to you, be warned to stick to your guns and stand by your booking confirmation. We did enjoy our stay.

Room Tip: Don't be fobbed off with what you didn't book.

We really enjoyed staying here. Our room was lovely with a huge - and very comfortable -double bed. Unfortunately, the shower was very slow to drain and leaked over the floor. Each room is different with interesting pictures and nicnacs to make them special.

Everyone wasextremely friendly. Breakfast was excellent - if a little pricey.

The location was excellent and private parking useful - 8 euros a night.

Room Tip: There is a small lift and the wooden stairs to the top floor are uneven, but this adds to the indivi...

Stayed one night in May whilst combining a battlefield visit with 2 nights in Bruges
Superb comfortable hotel with an extremely good restaurant.
Enjoyed the tasting menu with wines where we drank wines we would not normally have chosen. Extremely enjoyable dinner and friendly family service.
Would strongly recommend and return.
Would also recommend visiting Talbot House which is very interesting and moving.
