“good value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2011

we have just returned from the buck inn after a stay of 2 nights and found it a real value for money venue. Staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. having stayed in several inns in various parts of the country over the past few months this is the only one we would consider returning to. Being walkers we appreciate a good hot bath when we return so were pleasantly surprised to find very hot water but also high pressure so it did not take an age to fill up the bath as we have found in higher priced establishments. The cask ales were excellent and food prices were comparable to other establishments. The room we had was smaller than some but it was the cheaper price and had enough room for two of us......some people seem to expect an awful lot for their money but we found at the buck inn every penny we spent was worth it.

Found details of the BUCK INN on www and booked in advance for 2 nights in June as part of a round trip of North Yorkshire ,sight seeing and fishing. What a find ! Made most welcome by Sue ,Felt a great atmosphere immediatly .Although the rooms are a little tierd the real ales, food and attentive staff made up for it (the rooms do need some TLC)
Great value accomodation, wonderful menu and actual food on the plate, and realistic bar prices for a real ale lovers paradise.Although we are in Somerset we are trying to fit in another visit before too long. JOHN ASHLEY

Room Tip: only saw rooms 1 & 10 Pick 10

Two nights stay in this lovely Inn, the staff were so friendly and helpful and nothing was a bother to them. The food was excellent and a great selection of ales to sample.

This is not a welcoming hotel , we were greeted by a rather unfriendly lady who gave us the impression we were putting her out by our arrival . The room we had was shabby and the public rooms looked tired , i couldn't get served at the bar in the lounge which was tiny for locals and staff who looked like they had sat their all day and were using some quite colourful language . Then came meal time ! The food was nothing to write home about and for what it was is far too expensive it's nothing more than standard food you would find in chain pubs but at double the price . If this pub were anywhere else but the lovely village of Malham it would be shut down by now .

Room Tip: Wouldn't stay here again if it were free !

Upon arrival, the hotel appeared to have no record of our booking and we were eventually shown to a small, tired room. TV had only 4 terrestrial channels and it desperatley needed a make over. Carpet was not too clean and there must have been a leak from the guttering at one point as the wall was waterstained.

Unable to secure restaurant booking at either the Buck Inn or Lister Arms, we ate dinner in the noisy bar of the Buck. Food was very expensive and portions small. Perhaps most upsetting of all was that they actually serve FRIES with your meal - not the hearty, home cooked chips you were hoping for. What they charge, serving fries is a disgrace.

We slept fine however and when we checked out, the landlady processed our payments and was apologetic about our room, urging us that if we came back we could have one of the better rooms. Saying that, the room cost less than we thought - perhaps because the owners know how poor it is.

I stayed with friends at the buck described on their website as a traditional yorkshire dales inn . Whilst it did have some feel of the dales the overall impression was it's a up market Mcdonalds .It feels worn and tired inside , the food is basic and not all as freshly cooked as they make out ! The yorkshire pudding looked and tasted as they had just come via Tesco and shoved in the oven for 2 mins and the same goes for a lot of the food . The service was slow , we ordered our meal at 8pm and got it at 9.20 pm ! the waitress looked about 12 yrs old and couldn't answer our concerns about our wait . All in all it wasn't a very nice experience and whils we will visit Malham again we wont stay or eat at the Buck again .

Room Tip: My only advice is dont stay here !

The good points were its location, the beer and helpfulness with our bikes (we were cycling the Way of the Roses).

However, if the twin room (Number 2) we had is anything to go by the accommodation can best be summed up as basic to grubby. The door to the shower / loo didn't close and the lock had obviously long gone. The room and the place generally had a 'last cared for in 1970' feel to it and I was very very disappointed. The food was ok (not especially good) but ridiculously overpriced - it almost seemed to be a case of 'its a long way from here to get anything to eat so there is a premium to pay'. Pepper sauce with your £18 steak sir? That will be an extra £3!

Stop for a beer and a bite to eat certainly, if you don't mind paying the extra money, but I really can't recommend staying here until the owners re-furbish / clean the accommodation up a bit. On the other hand, if you really want to stay in Malham (and why wouldn't you - Malham Cove makes it well worth a visit and it is about right for the end of day 1 of The Way of the Roses if you are doing it in 4 days) there really isn't a lot of choice.
