After recently staying at BECKHALL in Malham I thought compelled to make an effort to warn potential "stayers" of some serious downsides.

First though I'll start with the positives. The owners, particularly Simon are very friendly & helpful & the location of the property is very nice - next to the river (although the access could prove difficult for some as it's via a narrow slate footbridge). The breakfast is O.K too.

So to the negatives:

Firstly & worst of all is that the standard of rooms differ wildly. On our arrival we were given a room which could only be described as a "squalid student bedsit". The room was very dark with little natural light & unfortunately the chosen decoration just added to the depressing feel. The inbuilt wardrobe was very dusty & not fit for clothes. The bathrobe contained a "loo brush" which was a serious health risk, the general cleanliness of the room was also very questionable, as were the provided selection of towels - 3 of which were hand towels & only one bath towel. The bedspread had never seen an iron so gave the impression of the bed having already been slept in !!

After requesting a room change (which if it had not been provided would have left the alternative for us of moving B&B completely !!) the second room was of a much better quality - being one of the "4 poster bed" rooms available. The room was light & airy & reasonably decorated. However it has to be said again that general hygeine standards were not especially good - another offending toilet brush was evident, as was the mismatch towels. A lack of general housekeeping was evident with several corners in the room (& around the carpet) showing evidence of noticeable dirt / stains.

I could mention several other minor issues but I guess by now everyone gets the picture.

My conclusion would be don't stop at Beck Hall - I'm sure that the River Hotel / Buck Inn & especially the Lister Arms all provided a better standard of accommodation & especially hygeine. If you must stop at Beck Hall then make sure you get one of the 4 poster rooms, although this again increases the prices which in my opinion are already way too high for the quality of the accommodation Beck Hall provides.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just as a footnote this is the first & ONLY B&B of many we have stayed in that we considering checking out early from & trying to find other accommodation closeby - fortunately the "room change" saved us this inconvenience although we still considered the option !!

Stayed here in June.

I was very disappointed as the photos looked so nice! Should have known better!

The owners can't be faulted, they are so friendly and kind.

The place needs alot of improvements though it does cater for hikers and is very pet friendly.

It's a shame to critise it as it's so friendly but it is a bit 'grubby'. The towels have seen better days and there's alot of clutter around.

The food was pain but good and plentiful and breakfast good.

I wouldn't saty again but I can see why people like it - sort of!

This was a fabulous experience. Simon and his wife are delightful innkeepers. They are warm and generous, and make your stay worthwhile. We stayed in the Green Room, which had an antique bed and a view of the garden. Breakfast was above average. We really had a great time.

Great, comfortable room and the perfect location for my hiking trip on the Pennine Way (which runs literally through the grounds of this place). Loved relaxing by the real fire in the evening and a great breakfast next morning too.

A couple of excellent pubs in the village nearby (try the food at the Listers).

All in all, great value for money at the rate I paid.
