“relaxing, perfect!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2007

Only stayed for one night but my boyfriend and I had a wonderful time. The beds are superb and all the rooms are different, I peeked! An honesty bar is great and right next to the log fire in the lounge, Just right after our walk to the cove and round.

Loved all about staying here, and will definitely come back later this year.

Spent 3 nights in this B&B early March 2007. It has a superb location in the centre of Malham with the stream flowing across the front. In fact, you have to cross the stone footbridge with one hand rail to access the property. This can be difficult in the dark as there are no street lights in the village and with suitcases it can be awkward to get across. Parking for this B&B is free and is located 50 yards up the road and on the opposite side of the stream.
It is a very homely place to stay and is an original 18th century house that has retained the period setting with a lovely log fire in residents lounge. However the property is in need of refurbishment and modernisation but this should be done soon within the character of the existing setting. Carpets and other furnishings are dated. We were also disappointed to find the en-suite bathroom was carpeted rather than tiled.
The owners are exceptionally helpful and friendly and offer evening meals and packed lunches if required. Full English breakfast is provided along with choice of cereal/yoghurts and juices and it is of a high quality with large portions.
In addition, there are two local pubs (Buck Inn and The Lister Arms hotel) that serve superb evening meals at competitive prices within 5 minutes walk.
This B&B offers good value for money if advantage is taken of the 3 for 2 offer available out of season. New 8 bedroomed extension currently being built for Summer 2007 that would entice us to stay here again.

In a world where brand and sometimes bland are universally offered then you need character. Beck Hall has it! The building, the owners, the location are all great. You have to cross a stone footbridge to get to Beck Hall as the car park is a short walk away but it's all worth it. The property is being extended and is due to be complete in early summer, so the new wing should be spotless and the owners are taking the opportunity to refresh some of the older bedrooms as well. Breakfast is good and the packed lunch sandwiches are good value. The residents bar is an "honesty" bar where you record what you have taken. I doubt that many residents lie, you wouldn't want to do that to owners who are so friendly. Overall its a bit idiosyncratic perhaps but none the worse for that.

Good size but v.shabby room for the price, and a cold dining room with mediocre breakfast.
Friendly owner and great location doesn't justify price.

This B & B has a fantastic location in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

In the blue & green rooms, it is like steppign back in time, with carved wood panels & 4-poster beds. Fortuanately, the bathrooms are more modern! Apparently there are also more modern rooms, but they do not interest us so much!

The breakfast has improved since our previous stay a couple years ago and really set us up for the day.

It is evident that the owners really care about their property & do everything they can to ensure their guests have a good stay. This includes a residents lounge with honesty bar, board games & books etc. etc.

PS with reference to a previous review, a notice on the landing when we stayed informed us that a new kitchen extractor fan was to be fitted to eliminate cooking smells!! Having said that, with such nice smells coming from the kitchen, it is a shame evenign meals are not served! (the two pubs in the village are both recommended for their food, however!)

  • Tips/Secrets — pay the extra couple of quid for the blue or green room

Good Points:
-Good Setting
-View from the Blue Room is fantastic! Definitely reccomend Blue, Green or Nine
-Wonderful Food
-Great Hospitality
-Nice Oldy Worldy Rooms
-Sky in most Rooms
-Internet Access
-Pet Friendly
-Staff need a Pay-rise!! They are so welcoming.
-Comfortable Residents Lounge
-Owners Trust you enough to let you write down what you take from the bar

Improvements to be made:
-Smell of food up in the rooms (although it is a good smell to wake up to!)
-Some rooms need to be painted/ wall papered a lighter colour to make the room look more modern and brighter as some are quite dingy
-More welcoming if you had all white towels with an embroidered name on and picture of beck hall. Because the ones in our room were a bit shabby and well-used and multicoloured. so the overall view of the room was a bit immature
-Little welcome message on the pillow with a bunch of freshly picked flowers or dried lavender, feels a bit more welcoming. No one reads those paper vouchers, because they are a bit bulky and uninteresting, especially with that questionnaire. It looks too messy
-Get rid of the Yorkshire Dales booklets. They just get in the way
-Put some more mirrors in the place
-Brighter Light Bulbs
-Modernise the decor. But leave the residents lounge the same
-Make a proper bar like a pub for residents to use during the day
-Replace the funiture in the residents lounge to make it more comfier, or make some throws for the sofas because they look a bit shabby.
-Declutter the residents lounge, make it more roomy
-Replace the drapes on the four poster beds, because they are a bit shabby, but keep the look of the fancy patterns on the bedspreads etc
-Iron the quilts!!!
-Provide better, comfier furniture/chairs in the rooms
-Replace some of the beds, they are a bit thin!!! especially room 5 double!! if you can call it a double anyway!
-Replace the carpets in the rooms because they look a bit worn in
-Get televisions in every room!! I missed out on 3 days of Corrie in Green room!
-Get a wide screen tv in the residents lounge ofr everyone to watch and socialise!! Better than sitting in a room by yourself!
-Make the whole place look brighter with a lick of cream paint, especially the reception because it is the first thing you see when you walk in
-Put a coffee table in the rooms if they are big enough, with two nice comfy chairs
-The dining room needs a few new table cloths, preferably a light colour to make the room bigger. and make the room brighter aswel!

Good Luck with the new extension and get rid of the cobwebs!!!
I will be definitely staying in the future!
