Owner description: Completed in 1834 and now lovingly restored, the Salmon Bothy is a superb example of a salmon house with working and living accommodation. The intimate museum tells the story of Portsoy’s harbour and town as a trading, smuggling and fishing port. Explore your roots in the fully equipped genealogical research facility and use the Bothy as a base to explore Portsoy’s splendid harbour and town, as well as the great walks along the coast. 'Upstairs at the Bothy' is a unique and charming venue space regularly hosting musical events, workshops and activities. With a capacity of 60 people it makes a perfect meeting place or party venue and is available to hire.

We held our wedding reception in the upstairs at the bothy. Great venue, the caretakers were very accommodating and we decorated the hall as we pleased, although the rustic charm was what we wanted. it was a humanist wedding as the bothy does not yet have a license and we were not interested in going down the religious route. The harbours were a great location for photographs, highly recommend venue for anyone looking for something intimate and bespoke.

It's never a chore to go back to my home county Banffshire. It is undoubtedly God's own special place. The Salmon Bothy's intimacy and Portsoy's friendliness made a trip to Cahalen Morrison and Eli West's gig there on 12 April a joy.

The rustic intimacy of the restored building gives fantastic ambience to performances such as Chalen and Eli's. They themselves sang the praises of those who made them welcome and for the soundman who pitched things just right.

This is community in action. This is what can be achieved by local people committing to cultural development and respecting heritage. The Prime Minister's largely-forgotten and ill-advised bluster about The Big Society was just that. It is nothing new. It's what communities do, do well and have always done.

We will be back to examine its other fascinating facilities.

Thank you Portsoy, from a grateful Keith exile.

outside it poured down , inside the bothy we were treated to a glass of malt and a session of humorous folk ditties with the main character of all being the highland amber nectar. I for one am glad it rained, a truly warming few hours
