“Lovely little hotel”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

We had a long weekend in this area and were already booked into the Pennan Inn for the second night but hadn't booked anywhere for the first night. By 8p.m., we'd found nowhere available and followed the sign up the hill to the Knowes. Thankfully they had vacant rooms. We got two lovely rooms with all the facilities, and very clean. One room at the front had a spectacular sea view. The other room looked out on countryside and, with the window left open all night, it was lovely to hear the dawn chorous. We were too late for an evening meal in the hotel, but ate down in the village. Apart from that, everything was perfect. Gorgeous breakfast! The owner was so welcoming and helpful. Will definitely pay them a visit next time we are in the area.

The view out of the top rooms is outstanding! The food is home-like and the service is very friendly. Make sure to book, for three reasons: it is packed even off-season, the rooms can be very cold if they don't prepare them upfront, and try to get one of the top rooms! You will need to play a little to activate a strange shower system, but it will be well worth thanks to the view!

Room Tip: Top rooms - fantastic view on the bay and amazing photo spots.

The Mansefield House recommended the Knowes Hotel for evening meals, and they were right to do so.
The Owner Debbie made me most welcome and the Bar staff were all very friendly, and efficient and professional at the same time. I happened to mention that I had a birthday whilst I was away, and Happy Birthday was sung for me by Debbie and Sheila, making my day a bit special away from home. The food was well cooked and a varied menu. Fresh al dente vegetables added to the pleasure. On my last evening, I thought there was going to be tears. What lovely people. I would recommend this Hotel.

Room Tip: Only used the bar/restaurant

We travel down to MacDuff to get our workboat refit at the shipyard and are always guaranteed a warm welcome at The Knowes Hotel. Debbie and John go out of their way to make sure we are comfortable and well cared for. We arrived without a reservation and we were given the very top room (number 5) and there was some concern we might be too cold and we were provided with an extra heater which we didn't need as we were quite comfortable. The views of the raging sea from the bedroom window were amazing- we felt on top of the world! The Wifi signal was good in the room which was much appreciated as we need to keep in touch with the businesses we run. My husband fancied some peas for dinner which they didn't have on offer but wouldn't you know they went out and got some for him. I love porridge for a healthy breakfast and they made it for me even though they usually require advance notice. I wish all proprietors were so flexible and cared for their clients in the manner that these two do! We look forward to our next trip down and promise to try and give them a little more notice!

I stayed for one night while touring the coast of Scotland by motorbike. The welcome was warm and helpful, without being overbearing. The parking was ample and felt secure, albeit on a steep slope. The cooked breakfast was excellent. The room was clean and the bed comfortable; the shower was an unlit plastic cubicle standing in the corner - entirely adequate, but I was glad to have used it before it got dark. The dedicated WC across the corridor was fine. The location looking over the town and harbour is splendid. I could have sat looking at the view all week. The town seems in decline, and the bar proved to be an attraction for some of the local young men; nevertheless, the atmosphere is friendly and I would be pleased to stay again.

Room Tip: The view from the windows at the front of the hotel is outstanding.

We visited Debbie & John Anderson with a view to present them with an historical Lithograph which we had owned for over 40 years. Research showed that The Knowes Hotel building was formerly a 'Ragged School' which was built in 1849 with funds donated by businessman John Murray who loved Macduff and wanted to help the destitute children in the village. The children were fed, clothed and taught free, irrespective of religion, both girls and boys. And in recognition of his efforts the building was called the Murray Institution.
The building has been extended but the main schoolrooms and teachers living accommodation are still in use, as the bar, restaurant area, and bedrooms..
The views are, without doubt, amazing. The food is delicious and the welcome warm and sincere.
The bedroom we stayed in overlooked the harbour and Banff and was spacious and well equipped. The bed was huge and very comfortable, with a unique shower!!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and must thank Debbie and John and their staff for accepting our gift. The Lithograph - which raised funds for the building of The Knowes hotel is now home and safe in their hands.

Room Tip: Room 5 has a fantastic view but other rooms views are equally good.

John and Debbie and the Knowes Hotel provided excellent service and location for our sons 18th birthday party. Very helpful staff ,understanding that their were some under age guests who would have liked to have been served alcahol but were profesional enough to let these guests down gently.Doormen were very polite & profesional. All in all a great venue for a function with brilliant staff .Thank you John and Debbie for letting us use your function hall and thanks to your hotel staff for their help in making my sons birthday a night to remember.
