The venue is like Dr Who’s Tardis, small on the outside and massive on the inside. The mixture of old and new décor really works. The food is top notch, a varied menu and even though there were 20+ in our party the food was served piping hot. The staff have great attitudes, they couldn’t do enough for us, they actually appeared to want to do their job and serve, nothing is too much trouble. So thanks to Jonathan, Tash , Bess, Yann, Lucy, Jess, Danni and Emma. I would definitely recommend.

We had our wedding reception at the Red Lion on Saturday 5th October 2013 and the day went very smoothly. The staff were very helpful before the event, answering all my questions and nothing was too much trouble such as different wine and meals for certain guests. We had lots of very positive feedback from guests about the food and the venue in general on the day. The reception went off without a hitch and Jonathan from the Red Lion made sure to check in to make sure we were happy with everything throughout the day. I would recommend the Red Lion to anyone as a venue for their wedding.

We enjoyed our stay here, drinks a bit pricey. Staff helpful and polite. Would stay here again. Well located for Cambridge and surrounding area. Breakfast was included in the cost of the room and was a full English, excellent.

Recently visited and stayed at the hotel for a friends birthday the venue itself is lovely cannot fault the pub, staff or hotel rooms, They are very quirky and unique to each room varying in size and layout. The room used to host the events, weddings, birthdays etc is fantastic clean and tidy a really fun place to be. The food however was a little disappointing the menu was quite ambitious and unfortunately I feel fell short of what you would hope for. During the evening the noise from the disco was heard in the bedrooms so if an event is going on then it should be something to be aware of as we were part of the party this did not matter to us. The service by staff was fantastic they were a credit to the slightly overbearing manager although he meant well.

I would recommend to the red lion that they simplfy the menu to be able to cope with the chefs abilities. That said the breakfast was much better then the evening meal.

We bought a 59GBP 1 night B&B off Living Social, we used it last night, we couldnt be more pleased, it is situated next door to the train station with trains on the hour to london and to cambridge, it is 2 stops from cambridge (about 10 mins). When we booked the receptionist was honest enough to explain that they had a function going on until midnight so it may be noisy. Upon arrival we were offered the free wifi. The hotel is cute with its small doors and narrow corridors, the bar and staff all look very presentable and are very attentive. The room was snug and had a clean ensuite shower room. The tea and coffee facility was full of good quality tea and coffee and a fudge sweet to satisfy the sweet tooth. We were also offered a 1pm checkout which we gladly took advantage of. the breakfast was lovely, it was served up until 10am and again good quality teas and good continental selection followed by a 'proper' english cooked breakfast, the waitress explained if there was something we wanted that wasnt on the menu we could ask. There was a fire alarm tripped off whilst packing somewhere but even this could not dampen out spirits a truly wonderful little find! ... It's the sort of place you would consider entrusting your big wedding day function such was the professionalism and charm of the venue. If you are thinking of a trek into Cambridge it is 4.20GBP to Cambridge or 20GBP by taxi. If you are wanting to go look round the air museum then its ideally placed. There is a large hotel chain branch next door but after staying here I can only imagine it acts as an overflow accommodation facilitator.

Room Tip: pick a room away from a door so the shutting doesnt wake you.

The Red Lion is a pub with delusions of Grandeur. One pint of beer a 175 ml glass of house Sauvignon two packets of Crisps £13.80 The wine £6.95. In my pub in Surrey no more than £8.65. I mentioned this on leaving and the girl behind reception agreed. The menu sounds good but they had not reprinted and the mussels were off no replacement therefore only on hot starter. Food was expensive and no better than average. The Cook and that's what we have here not a chef, did not season the meat the result was a bland steak. The rooms are small but comfortable Good TV Staff are friendly but in the evening disorganised nobody in Charge and certainly no training for the part time waitresses. The web site mentions Dining rooms or areas It is just one big bar area split up by notional divides.Furniture is cheap and despite efforts to the contrary has a cafe atmosphere rather than old world pub

Lighting in communal areas based on sensors which are delayed and do not come on quickly enough corridors are narrow low doors. Door to our room about 4ft 6 ins high Very twee but very inconvenient

Breakfast poor Fruit two bananas past their sell by date a couple of apples and that was about it seven pieces of fruit in a bowl. I had to send my bullet poached eggs pack Portobello mushrooms on the menu we got tinned. Two sausages on menu I got one

The website tells a good story but the result is disappointing

On balance avoid.

Very nice interior and exterior, conference facilities good. Dinner was poor. Tasteless cheese filled starter, cheese and asparagus flying saucer pastry for main which wasn't good, pineapple sponge was very good, as was cooked breakfast. The dining room was poorly prepared and impersonal and drinks at the bar expensive. The bar staff need customer training to smile. Stayed at the holiday inn opposite.

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for your constructive feedback.

I was very disappointed to read your review. The Red Lion on the occasion you visited did not reach the levels we as a hotel expect.

We go to great lengths to emphasis to our people how important it is to be courteous and welcoming. A smile is a large part of this and sullen members of staff simply will not be tolerated. We provide as a hotel a fair, welcoming, happy and rewarding environment because we are aware our people will face stressful situations which is just part and parcel of working life.

The food comments I have passed to the head chef however all produce is locally sourced and created in house.

Two very vital components of our business have failed you and frankly I am very disappointed with my people. I can only apologise for the very sizeable gaps in our service levels.

We appreciate your custom and I hope you will return to experience the proper Red Lion not the poor version you were given.

Kind Regards

Ross Ferguson
