we turned up expecting great things due to what we've heard about this place...yeah those expectations couldn't have turned out any different!

The staff: very poor, unprofessional, untrained, uncaring, unknowledgeable on anything and a bit of advice if you're going to talk down about/bad of customers at least move away from the people you're talking about ie US! (we hadn't even done anything wrong)

Food: tasted great WHEN WE HAD SOME!, we was there 3+ hours and maybe had 1 steak each at a push, they know how to postpone delivering the food very clever! especially on filling you up on drink and carb based food rather than meat "the steaks take 20 minutes to cook"..erm steaks do not take 20 minutes to cook! and if only they did as we'd have gotten more than what we did

so that's the starter and main, pudding? well a waitress came over and asked us about 10.10pm if we would like one. In a way that was saying 'don't order a pudding'. She then said to her colleague 'I offered them a dessert but they said it would take to long, which it will'

all in all I will 100% NOT BE returning unless the staff have at least an hours worth of training, Customer service being top of the agenda, the slow service may have been excused if the restaurant was busy but it was just over half full if that..'all the steak you can eat' ?...we left hungry due to fresh air on empty plates not being very filling

We were part of a Groupon deal which was an overnight stay and £40 credit towards dinner (basically paid for 2 of our steaks). We arrived and thought it was closed....prior to this I had been calling since the day before to confirm my booking and had no answer or my call returned so not too happy. We wandered around the place to find a young lad greet us and tell us that its all closed as they have no electric, but hopefully our room will have! We were shown to our room, past chairs stacked up and boxes everywhere to find a very quirky african themed room, nice, but very very small and I wouldnt have wanted more than 1 night in there. Dust everywhere andthe shelf fell off the wall......
As there was no bar there - actually renovating, but not told this when we booked, we went to a place down the road for a drink. Returned not knowing if we would get dinner or not and to be told yes all fine we would!
Dinner was very very slow service, we ordered the steak, to be told they had run out....yes....a steak restaurant with no small steaks......after a visit to the kitchen the waitress came back to tell us they would give us a larger steak for the proce of the smaller one! The meal was ok, steak very nice, vegetables swimming in butter and to be honest pretty pleased to return to our room.....only to listen to the sound of the huge air conditioning until outside.
Would I return, no I dont think so, would I stay again overnight, definatly not. We were very dissapointed. The staff were very young, very scruffy, not tentative and we felt very out of place.
I wont even mention breakfast time.........waited 30 mnutes for the waiter to arrive and had to get up to find him for my coffee....I would like to try The Rare Cow in Billericay or Writtle but wouldnt return here at all.

Room Tip: Dont have the african themed room - huge air con unit outside and above the kitchens.

We were looking forward to what promised to be a sumptuous and delightful meal our expectations were far from met. The place seemed to be run by adolescents who's sense of service and professionalism seriously lacked, so on top of poor service and messed up orders the food was dry and unappetising. All in all a thoroughly disappointing meal and experience far from what they claim to be! And being a Groupon offer/customer seemed to have a bearing on this! Shocking !

I found the service poor with lack of attention to the customer, the steak I ordered was not cooked properly and was extremely tough , the meal was also highly priced for quality that was served. Iwould certainly not recommend the restraunt at the Rare hotel

Went on a Wednesday evening armed with a Groupon Voucher. The menu for an upmarket pub was very expensive but the voucher obviously helped. The food was good but it took a long while to arrive. Would not go back.

I was interested to try this new restaurant in Earls Colne as it replaced a favourite restaurant run by the Blackwell family. We visited on a Friday evening, shortly after they opened. I didn't feel that the staff had had sufficient training and we had an extremely long wait for our food. The meal itself was adequate but not exceptional, I personally don't feel that I would return.

We had a Groupon for this stay, so as the hotel isn't that far from home for us it was like going out for a superb dinner, but staying over instead of getting a taxi home. Yes there is work going on and the staff maybe a little inexperienced in some areas, they more than made up for this with their friendliness and enthusiasm (even the decorator said hello and goodbye), we loved our room, it had a comfy bed and a great bathroom, we had the most fantastic dinner, our first experience of fillet steak. There's no real lounge to speak off but not sure what the downstairs will offer once completed. I'd maybe say keep the volume down on the music downstairs if restaurant shut, and clarify what breakfast is included with the bed & breakfast, but apart from that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return
