This part of Britain has more than its fair share of great coastline and whilst West Kirby does not (quite) have the Rio climate, it is still a nice place to come.

The beach is as it ever was and pretty unspoilt. The views are great too, across the Dee Estuary to the Welsh Peninsula, with the delightful wildlife sanctuary of Hilbre Island in between. At low water, you can walk to Hilbre and see many species of birds. There are also common grey seals in the water beyond.

The beach is safe and usually clean; if you observe the tide notices you can walk safely to Hilbre Island, also there is a good 1 km walk NW, through the nature reserve (natterjack toads) to the Red Rocks at Hoylake, or SE for 2 1/2 km to Sheldrakes Restaurant at Heswall shore.

Lovely clean beach to walk and admire the views across to Wales, but don't expect to see the see often. You can walk to Hibre Island but be careful to check the tide times

With the sun rising above the wood, a Kestrel hung motionless in the sea breeze, holding its position with tiny adjustments of wingtip and tail. Such poise, such control.
