“afternoon tea”
Reviewed 13 March 2014

my friend took me here for a treat, having experienced other afternoon teas this one was below par, cheese and tomato, egg with no taste, finger sandwiches, couple of tiny pieces of cake, a ruuny fruit tart, the only nice thing was scones. asked for couple more finger sandwiches, said we had to pay extra £2.50, service was polite and friendly, but other than that a bit of a let down!

I found this hotel after having a brief check on Groupon to take the other half away for a last minute Christmas present. The reviews seemed positive and costing £189 (inc Breakfast and Dinner) for one night, thought – hey why not, pricey but my fault for leaving it late.
I’m from North West London and so this was a quick one hour journey. We reached there late in the evening and were fairly impressed on first impressions. A dedicated private car park is always a good touch and sprinting through the rain, we were greeted in by a pleasant and helpful receptionist.
Our room was literally right behind the receptionist on the first floor. I was very impressed at the room presented to us. It was a contemporary design with hints and subtleties to a Tudor decor with wooden beams and Tudor windows. Very nice, along with the mahogany coloured flooring – we were very pleased. The bathroom was equally impressive, a walk in shower easily accommodating two or more (not that I’m proposing anything) but very spacious added to the ample towels provided.
As we got there late, we had our dinner straight away and this was included in the Groupon deal. However be sure to ask for the menu specific to Groupon, the options are limited and you can only choose two courses – either a starter & main or main & dessert. Drinks options were limited too via the Groupon deal. The food was not brilliant on all accounts. Felt quite heavy, stodgy, and bland and overall there wasn’t a great atmosphere in the dining room. The dining room we were in, which is literally to the left as soon as you enter the main entrance, felt secluded and cut off from the rest of the building. ‘Cold’ is a better word to describe the whole dining experience.
During the winter, the cold is harsh as we all know but a mistake we did was leaving the heater on whilst sleeping. Broken sleep and eventually waking up late resulted in us missing breakfast, though we didn’t mind much.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this manor as the surroundings are very scenic and nice. The room is very professional and well managed however I would think twice before having dinner.

Room Tip: Room near the reception as this is in reach of the wifi

I had a wonderful stay here and would certainly recommend it to friends and family. The room was lovely and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout. A beautiful house in a very pretty location!

Our daughter had bought this Saturday night stay as our Christmas present. I booked it through Secret Escapes. We booked in and we were in the rooms outside of the main hotel. Our first impression of room was good until we used the sink in the bathroom for the first time. The smell was awful coming from the sink. It smelt of stagnant water. We phoned over to reception and told them of the problem. They said would you like to move rooms and would phone back to us in 10 mins which they did. We were offered another room or to send housekeeping over and upgrade us to 3 course meal and bottle of wine. We chose the housekeeping and upgrade meal and wine. Our deal also included a cream tea which turned out to be an afternoon tea. The afternoon tea was excellent as was the 3 course meal in the evening. The service was excellent. Breakfast was also good but could have done with more staff. The only negative side to this lovely hotels is that it is at the end of the runway of Stansted Airport so planes are taking off all the time except through the night. Overall great value for money and a lovely hotel with great staff

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms in the outside rooms look huge

We had afternoon tea on a Groupon voucher on a Tuesday at 1 o'clock.
We were welcomed by a pleasant young lady at reception who said that I could drop my wife off in the reception area while I parked the car at the rear of the hotel.
On my return we were directed to the dining room where we were were met and welcomed by another pleasant young lady who showed us to our table overlooking the lake.
We were the only people there at such an early time but were joined a little later by two other couples.
The service was prompt and polite and the tea was not bad although the cake selection was unimaginative being just four different small squares apparently cut from larger trays.
The finger sandwiches were very good and the scones fine with generous supplies of clotted cream and preserve.
We felt that we had good value for the discounted price we paid but would have felt disappointed had we paid the full price of £16 per head.
All in all a pleasant experience.

Very nice and clean place with incredible green coloured grass! Clean rooms, new guest houses a little bit thin walls so you can hear others in the evening. We were at a wedding and it was so good. It's very near to London but not too much!

Lovely stay. Got vouchers from Groupon. Room really large and clean. I left my phone charger in room and didnt realise til I got home. Rang the hotel and they found it and sent it back to me in the post. Great service. Pretty hotel and grounds. Beautiful views over lake. Best of all were the staff. They were really helpful and friendly. Would stay there again.
