Set in the rolling Leicestershire countryside, cows in the meadow, a rushing stream at the foot of the garden and a cricket pitch in sight of the front door, what could be more idyllic and peaceful ?
This 16th Century Wilberforce manor house was first converted into a hotel over 150 years ago -and that shows in a few places; expect creaking stairs and floor boards, uneven floors, and odd shaped rooms - but that all helps give it a lovely character. A welcoming reception, cosy bar and lounge and a pleasant oak panelled dining room all add to the aged charm. Modern terrace furniture overlooks the garden. My room was No9, very spacious with several views of the grounds and good facilities including an excellent bathroom, plus shower cubicle. £70 a night including breakfast !
I didn't eat in the restaurant as we had a private dinner. This was not fine dining but had good choices, was nice food and served promptly. The main dining room menu looked wide and varied and our cooked breakfast was very good, served cheerfully. Overall our party of 16 were very happy and felt it was a good location and venue and surprisingly inexpensive for the quality. Minor grumble was a little tired and worn in places, no lift and some rooms on 2nd floor were a long walk; also some rooms in a separate annex in the grounds which were a little unkempt; otherwise very good. Will use again.
