From phoning the hotel to confirm the room through to checking out, the service was very personal and friendly. When we asked about local places to eat we were recommended a few options and when we asked to book a taxi, Jude (one of the owners) kindly offered to give us a lift in. The room was lovely, clean and characterful and breakfast the next morning was delicious.

Very highly recommended!

Room Tip: Four poster bedroom very nice

We stayed at The Retreat for two nights and it was a really lovely weekend. There was a warm welcome from Jude on our arrival and were directed to Room 7. The room was a really good size and a nice sized separate bathroom too. The room had a four poster bed and lots of old pictures and different shapes and sizes and mirrors. You really get the feeling of being in a nice old room filled with character.

We were going out for a late lunch and Jude was very helpful in suggesting some restaurants in the area, we chose to go to The Paper Mill in Lasswade, which was lovely. On our return we found that Jude had left out some glasses as she had noticed we had brought along a bottle of bubbly. This was a really nice touch.

After a really comfortable nights sleep, breakfast was delicious and we went out for the day down to Melrose and Galashields in the borders. We ate in a great restaurant called Herges on the Loch

All in all our stay at The Retreat was fantastic and definitely recommended.

Room Tip: Room 7 is really spacious and has a great outlook.

Just back from staying at The Retreat Castle - what a truly special place. The rooms were gorgeous (loved the angels!) and spotlessly clean. Had everything you could need. The owners were very friendly and attentive. What more could you ask for? Wished we had been able to stay longer.

If you are bored of staying in clinical, boring hotels with no character then this is the place for you.
This place is a little castle set back from the road and when you walk through the doors you feel like you have stepped back into medieval times.
The mixture of original features, props, pictures and squeaky floorboards mixed with the modern touches give this place a relaxing, fun and quirky feeling. It just makes you smile.
My room had a mix of informal odd furniture (which worked perfectly) gorgeous big windows and an incredibly comfy four poster bed.
There were large, soft towels, nice loo roll and plenty of hot water. There's also a big kettle and plenty of tea and coffee.
The breakfast is amazing. If you go for the full Scottish breakfast you won't want anything else to eat all day!
By far the best thing about the stay though isn't the hotel itself but the hosts. Jude couldn't do enough for me. She helped me to my room with my bags, was very knowledgable about the area and would have helped with anything she could to make my stay as relaxing and stress free as possible.
There isn't a bar or restaurant on site but that doesn't matter as there are some very nice places to eat nearby.

I can't wait to to go back.

We stayed in the Retreat Castle by default as we had booked a room via late rooms however when we turned up the owner advised she was not open until May. We then drove round and found this absolute treasure and have to say it was a million times better than the place we had booked on late rooms. From the second that we arrived the owner Jude made us feel like friends rather than guests. She was very welcoming and friendly and easily the nicest host we have had the pleasure to meet. Our room was huge and beautifully decorated and very tastefully furnished. I would go as far as saying it was one of the most beautiful rooms we have ever stayed in. It was well equiped with all the usual facilities like tea and coffee making, iron with full size ironing board etc. We also had a stunning 4 poster bed. The ensuite was also huge with lovely toiletries and fluffy white towels. Breakfast in the morning was faultless. I cant recommend this hotel enough and will definately return if we have a night out in Edinburgh.

Room Tip: the room we stayed in was on the first floor i think it was room 8 and was above the conservatory ov...

Got a great deal on this place for b&b on Easter weekend. We heard about this place from a friend who recommended we stay there and we were certainly not disappointed. This place is really special. You must go experience it! On arrival we got upgraded to a very big and beautiful room with a four poster bed. We were tempted to miss our show in town and just stay there! En suite great and very spacious. Owners lovely. Jude is such a great host and was very helpful, showing us bus route information etc. Bus stop literally across the grass in front and slightly to the left which provides easy access to Edinburgh city centre. Route 31 runs regularly.

Room Tip: Any room would be amazing in this place to be honest!

Having worked in the service industry for the past seven years, I find it easy to get jaded and pick holes when I visit a hotel. Well, this place is a true labour of love, and I can't compliment it highly enough.

Jude (the owner) is charming, and really takes pride in making every effort to please her guests. We spoke on the phone the day of our visit, and as they no longer have a bar/restaurant, she recommended a local restaurant to us (Gigis), and offered to book us in. This is the kind of meticulous service you'd expect from a top-end hotel, not a reasonably-priced guest house. The meal was delicious and provided a lovely start to our break.

From the moment we arrived at the Retreat, we felt at ease and looked after. Jude offered to carry our bags, and made us feel at home, filling us in on the activities nearby. Even before I mentioned that we had come away to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday, we were whisked upstairs to a Four Poster Bedded Room as an upgrade. Nothing seemed too much trouble, and when you don't get much quality time together, things like that mean a lot.

The house is gorgeous, built in the 17th century and still retaining a distinctly gothic, magical charm. Located only a minute or two from the bus stop, it makes for an easy, cost-effective commute to Edinburgh City Centre and the Zoo, costing only £1.40 each way. The bedroom itself (Room 7) was luxurious and dramatic, with the main feature its four poster bed. Very comfortable nights' sleep. Our bathroom was huge with great toiletries and snug, soft bath towels.

When we stumbled sleepily down the majestic staircase in the morning, our breakfast table was lovingly adorned with streamers and a solitary white balloon, etched with a hand-written "Happy Birthday". An incredibly thoughtful thing to do, so simple, but it meant so much.

We have fond memories of the Retreat Castle, and I'd like to thank Jude and her family for a fantastic night's stay, and the extra brownie points at home! I hope to be back some day, but if you're planning a trip to Edinburgh, look no further.
