“Lunch at The Quay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014

Just spent a lovely afternoon lunching at The Quay Hotel. Food was lovely and the service was excellent thanks to Tracey D. Nothing was too much trouble for Tracey and she kept checking back to see if we required anything more. Staff like Tracey are hard to be found and she should be treasured.

We stayed at The Quay Hotel and Spa for 3 nights in mid August as a couple for our anniversary. Upon arrival we were welcomed by a lovely lady who showed us to our executive room. This was very nice with a balcony and amazing views of the Castle and Estuary. We paid £475 for bed and breakfast.

We decided to settle in then go to the spa. We were extremely disappointed to find screaming children running in and out of the Sauna and Steam room with parents just laughing at them and no member of staff there to ask the children to remain in the pool, not the romantic atmosphere we were hoping for. After this experience we were made aware of the times for children to use the pool and made sure for the rest of our stay to go out of these times. The spa lacks a relaxing atmosphere, if there were to be dimmed lighting in the pool area and possibly some relaxing background music we feel this would add to the experience.

Our room was cleaned daily to a good standard, however we felt it not necessary for the cleaner to go through our bedside draws and move our belongings.

On our second evening we ordered room service which was very expensive and waited an hour and 40mins for it to arrive, when it did arrive the food was cold and we were told the chefs had gone home and therefore couldnt replace it. We were told to take it up with reception in the morning, not good service at all! We were later told the lady had forgot to write our room number down, we do understand that mistakes happen and the food was taken off our bill.

At breakfast the next morning we felt on edge as the waiting staff were unwelcoming. As one young lady was serving us another member of staff asked her where she had been and said she had been looking for her in an abrupt tone, very unprofessional when she was serving paying guests! Whilst waiting for a poached egg to be brought to the table my partner found a hair in her breakfast, again we understand that mistakes happen but by this point too many instances were occuring and we felt the need to bring our experiences to the managers attention.

The manager was appolgetic and offered us to spend our final night in a penthouse suite where he left us a lovely card and some cupcakes along with a bottle of Prosecco. We felt this to be a lovely touch. This hotel has the grounds to be amazing, with a bit of work on the spa and customer service we feel this could easily be a 5 star but for our personal experience we rate it a 3 star. We hope to visit again in the near future.

The hotel setting is stunning and the rooms are really well equipped but there are two things they can't do. Provide a decent supply of hot water and working wifi in the bedrooms. I struggled to get the shower to work and could only get a trickle of water. The wifi was supposed to work in the bedroom but didn't.

Room Tip: Ask for the main buidling

I booked a two night stay in August and found the hotel offered a cheaper rate by phoning direct eventually booking a suite with estuary view with evening meal for one night. Deal included a welcome jug of sangria which they forgot - actually to be fair so did I but when I queried it the cost of some drinks were taken off so that was fair. The room we had was 270 as one other reviewer has detailed had a few issues with it. Large suite area with a lovely view but would have expected a walk in shower as opposed to shower over the bath and bath mat. Could not open one part of the wardrobe because of bedside cabinet and could not get to safe. However bed very comfortable. How come they never put sockets near a mirror for us ladies to do our hair? Had to use a hand held one found in the bathroom and perch on the end of the bed. However the receptionist that greeted us was cheerful and very helpful and all the staff were extremely polite and attentive. The evening meal was an experience especially the salted mackerel with the rhubarb. The main meals were delicious as were the puddings. Breakfast was plentiful and of an excellent quality. Booked a massage and again the staff were very good and the spa and relaxation room good . The big let down was the swimming pool area with the sauna and steam room. Had expected a much better quality with at least some decent beds to relax on. Was bored within a short time! The changing room was small and basic and was surprised to have to pay for the towels. The gym looked well equipped but did not use that. A pleasant walk along the beach into Llandudno and Conwy interesting to visit. On reflection although initially impressed would have to say that it is rather pricey and overall not of such a high quality as I expected. Would I go back again - not sure.

The views from the executive room balcony over the bay to Conwy was fabulous. Rooms were large but the fridges did not appear to work. Staff were really friendly and helpful, especially our waiter for the evening meal, if it wasn't' for him the evening meal would have been a disaster. We chose to book the summer special which included diner on one of our nights stay. The hidden cost of having to pay a supplement on most of the main courses was not explained at time of booking. This left a limited choice of main courses. We tried to be experimental but we made the wrong choices and felt the meals were strange combinations, but they were our choice so cannot complain too much. I would stay here again but would eat out. Breakfasts on the other hand were very good.

Room Tip: The executive rooms with balcony overlooking the bay are good but lack a walk in shower.

Came here for the first time last Friday, receptionist was helpful and guided us to the bar area. We chose a table outside and had a bottle of rose wine which was chilled and reasonable priced. We also had 2 starters which I cannot fault. The inky thing I suggest is they spray something on their walls to ensure there are no seagull attacks whilst sitting outside
