“Absolutely brilliant!”
Reviewed 26 March 2014

Stayed one night for my wife's birthday. I wish we could've stayed longer. I tipped off the hotel that it was my wife's birthday on the booking e-mail and the staff made a real effort to help her have a memorable stay. The food in the Old Swan was great, the room in the Minster Mill (a "river room") was tremendous. I can't praise all the staff we encountered highly enough. Thoroughly recommended.

Room Tip: The River Rooms are brilliant.

My boyfriend and I got a deal from secret escapes for one night plus 3 course meal and breakfast for under £200! The area is incredibly picturesque and beautiful and the hotel itself was just lovely. We stayed in the new refurb part and although the rooms are small they are perfectly formed with cute bathrooms and pretty views. Dinner was absolutely wonderful with very attentive staff and it was a real treat to have an included three course meal that didn't come from a set menu. Everything about this place was perfect, we talk about going back all the time as it's where we fell in love so won't hesitate in coming back soon!

First visit, concur with all the posts with regard to the location, English rural idyll! The buildings full of the olde worlde charm and very tasteful decor befitting such property. Bowls of fresh fruit and sweets around. Intent on spending quality time with family, all three rooms were in the Minster building adjacent. No complaints as such, rooms overlooked the terrace, garden and the water. However, what we had not realised was the need to walk over to the Old Swan for our breakfasts and evening meal...and of course the bar. Ok, it's not that far, but in inclement weather and restricted mobility this is quite a drawback. (The reason we had to stay in the Minster building was minimum stairs -no ground floor rooms in the Old Swan part)...
The rooms were well appointed, tv., iron, hair dryer, etc etc., The bathroom was 'ok', think could do with some up grading i.e. bath is quite difficult to get in and out due to height, no magnifying mirror and no face flannels.
Log fires blazing, in the bar area - nice atmosphere for pre dinner drinks.
The breakfast we thought was excellent... fresh fruit of all varieties, and even if something was missing from the buffet, if you wanted a variation, it was no problem.
Dinner, again, very happy with the food, although the menu a tad unimaginative.. we enjoyed what we had. The house red was superb value for money!
Staff and service throughout the hotel was first class. There was not one "I'll go and find out,"
it was always "yes of course"!! We were made to feel very welcome, in both areas and all the staff were efficient, polite and friendly without being over familiar.
Reason not given an excellent, this is not really a disabled friendly hotel, especially if wheelchair user. I enquired re the disabled facilities. There is only one disabled room and that is in the Minster side, although all the rooms are accessible, a ramp i!s required for two sets of steps, that is manhandled by the staff. As previously said all the bathrooms have step over and in baths with shower over, but apparently this one disabled room as a walk in shower....
Having said this, would I recommend - certainly! Would we return - that's a definite!

Room Tip: Stay in the Old Swan if you dont want the walk over to the bar/restaurants...

Our first stay and we would agree with all the positive comments about location, charm and accommodation. It really is an exceptional place that exceeded all our expectations. But sadly what could easily have been a perfect stay was marred by a very disappointing dining room experience. The food when we got it was OK but the service was haphazard and very sub standard for this type of establishment. Our starter was forgotten and was brought to us an hour after our order was taken. The manager came to acknowledge the mistake and kindly offered consolation by pouring us another glass of our wine. While waiting for the starter we were offered someone else's main course. We were only given the complimentary welcome glass of champagne after enquiring about it at the time of placing our order. It would have been much nicer to have been offered this on arrival in the bar area. The couple next to us had to ask for theirs as well. And the couple on our other side returned a glass of wine which they were not happy with. The manager brought us a complimentary small glass of desert wine to have with our dessert but we didn't drink it because by that time we had already had pre drinks, champagne and a bottle of wine, so did not want or need any more alcohol. The staff although pleasant, appeared to be inexperienced and not as professional as you would expect. So there is definitely room for improvement with regard to this side of the business which I hope the management take on board.

Thank you for your review and "almost perfect" means we've got work to do. As with any comment made about our service, standards and hospitality, I have taken the time to discuss the detail with the Old Swan team. In conclusion, it is clear that we must improve our internal communication to ensure that we provide inclusive elements, such as welcome glasses of champagne, in a seamless manner. We did not do this and the slow service compounded your disappointment. I am truly sorry for these inadequacies and, whilst things might not always go according to plan, our response to any difficulties needs to be swift and mutually satisfactory. I agree that our offer of a dessert wine, whilst intended to be a thoughtful gesture, was miscalculated against that which you'd already enjoyed.

We have certainly taken your comments on board and we want everyone, who visits us, to leave with the most fantastic impression. If this is not the case, we will address the concerns and work harder to improve.

I hope you'll continue to return to the Old Swan & Minster Mill and we look forward to welcoming you back.

With best wishes

Authentically old, sumptuous, charming. We chose a return trip because we enjoyed it so much on our first foray into Oxfordshire. Didn't disappoint. In fact the food was great then, now it's just terrific. It is wonderfully close to Blenheim Palace and Winston Churchill's grave in nearby Bladon. Next year, he'll be dead 50 years. We will most certainly go back within 18 months. No doubt the resident ducks (who live in duck houses and are fed by the staff) will remember us.

Room Tip: The 16th century stuff is in the Old Swan, which is also where the dining room is located for all me...

Thank you for your review and we are all delighted that you so enjoyed your visit to the Old Swan & Minster Mill. Your comments will be a great help to others in learning about our Inn on the River and, of course, no-one else can match the character and charm, which Betty and Eddie provide to our guests. Never more than a metre apart from each other, our two white ducks enchant children and adults alike, enjoying their own 5-star accommodation behind the Old Swan too.

Our chef, David, was delighted that you rated his food as terrific and will continually strive to improve.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Old Swan & Minster Mill on your next visit to the Cotswolds.

With best wishes

Second stay for us at this wonderfully relaxing retreat, set in the idyllic unspoilt village of Minster Lovell, in a beautiful setting. The staff are very friendly and can't do enough for you. It's Ideally located for touring many sites and successfully merges the old and new contemporary styles. The food is excellent although service can be a little slow, but trust me, this is the only small gripe we had!) It's certainly not the cheapest hotel but in this case, you get what you pay for! A quality hotel.

We took advantage of the Sunday sleepover offer and were pleasantly surprised to be 'upgraded' into the Old Swan. It's a lovely setting and sitting on the terrace having afternoon tea a delight. The room with four poster bed was a good size but, unfortunately, the bathroom wasn't really big enough for two people at the same time. The dinner menu was unadventurous but well cooked. However, throughout the evening we heard apologies from the waiting staff as one couple were given a second starter instead of their main course, another couple sent back their starter as it wasn't good and our three course meal took over 2 1/2 hours (and the third course was cheese!). Breakfast was average as 'buffet' style cooked breakfasts are. We weren't alone, when checking out, in finding that our bill was wrong. Somehow £90 had been added without any explanation of what it was for. The receptionist struggled to find receipts and finally took the £90 off. We then explained that we'd had two large and two small glasses of wine and calculated the cost, which we then paid but could easily have walked away. I think someone needs to take a serious look at this as we heard a couple leaving the terrace after our afternoon tea being told by a waiter that they'd been overcharged and should go back inside.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and please accept my sincere apologies for the shortfalls you experienced. We have to take "the rough with the smooth" and last Sunday evening presented the team with challenges, to which we did not respond very well. We have discussed and untangled the mistakes we made so that we can address the administrative, organisational and planning problems we encountered. The training of staff must be a constant and ongoing process and I am very encouraged that the team here are happy to address their shortcomings and learn from them.

We will take a serious look at our administrative accounting to ensure that charges are correct in future.

In the meantime, I do hope that your experience has not deterred you from re-visiting the Old Swan & Minster Mill, so that on a future occasion you can enjoy a trouble-free visit.

With best wishes and many thanks indeed for alerting me to the problems you had.
