“Eventually all good”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

A few hiccups on our first stay earlier this year, but the sign of a good hotel is one that's prepared to listen and rectify. Initially highlighted issues to desk staff who seemed to develop a hearing disorder (in one - out the other). However, Maimee (Guest Host) appeared like a Genie from a bottle and took control. After her intervention, we gave the hotel a second visit and was more than happy with the way the initial problems were rectified and the whole experience. Would not hesitate to recommend now.

Thank you for your review and I was delighted that we were able to rectify your initial problems and restore your faith in our "Inn on the River". Like any business, things do go wrong and whilst we'd love this not to be the case, our actions determine how professional and fair we are viewed. I'm glad that Maimie was able to resolve everything for you and that you had a great time on your second visit.

I hope we'll have the pleasure to welcome you again soon so you can enjoy the Old Swan & Minster Mill some more.

With best wishes

After such a wonderful first stay where nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff and having raved about the hotel to our friends and family, we decided to treat my In-Laws to a 2 night stay in March 2014. Unfortunately our second visit was not even a scratch on our first. We were given two rooms in what felt like the car park right at the top of the hotel, which was a long way from the restaurant/reception. Unfortunately the weather was pretty awful and rained for almost the entirety of our visit yet no umbrella was left in the room or torch to make the long/dark walk to breakfast and dinner any better. The rooms were cold and we had to ask for an extra electric heater. No turn down service was provided. (Yet in our previous stay it was). To be honest we left feeling pretty disappointed and i was even a little embarrassed that i had rated this hotel so highly yet received very little of the service we received on our first visit.
Despite the not so good 2nd visit I would still recommend this hotel as the first time we were so blown away and i know how amazing this hotel really is as it was so great the first time! Not sure why our second visit was so different, they seemed very busy so maybe we were just forgotten with our room being so far away!

Room Tip: Worth paying the extra so you get a room closer to amenities!

Thank you for your review and I am so sorry that your second visit seemed so different to your first. It's likely that you paid to be in the Old Swan on your first visit and to differentiate the pricing we offer some additional services alongside bedrooms which enjoy the idiosyncrasies of a 600 year old building. Turndown is one such service, which does not occur in the Minster Mill bedrooms.

I take your point about our Hilltop bedrooms with regard to umbrellas and have immediately instructed the housekeeper to ensure that these are provided in all rooms. Hilltop offers a particular seclusion and, particularly in the summer months, the wonderful views of the meandering river Windrush are a great attraction of these rooms for many guests.

Since your visit we've just completed a new project - Swan Cottage. This is a cottage adjacent to the Old Swan and affords three bedrooms, all ensuite and with a lounge and bar area. Outside you can enjoy your own private garden with fire pit and patio areas, making it our top accommodation but I think this might be perfect for your next visit with friends and family?

We hope to see you again soon.

With best wishes

Easter getaway for us and we were charmed when we turned up at Old Swan & Minster Mill. The setting is lovely, real Cotswold Chocolate box. we had a garden room which was very nice. It had windows all along which gave us loads of light. the bathroom was tucked behind the bedroom so great use of space. On entering room it smelt a bit fusty but I think this was damp from the roof. TV only had about 7 channels which was a shame. However room was very comfy especially the bed which was really soft. For us the problem was the food. I should have known when I went in to order a drink and another complaining customer was having their meal comped! we ate dinner and had to hang around for nearly an hour for a simple fish & chips and pork belly. it's not a massive menu so not sure what is wrong. the manager apologised but then dessert took a while despite no other diners being in our bit of the restaurant. Pork belly was rubbery, veg a bit burnt, chips undecooked and the treacle tart base wasn't cooked properly. Clearly they have too many guests for the kitchen to cope with. We tried to go for breakfast the next morning but the buffet was a bun fight. Again too many punters for them to cope. We left without. They also didn't offer us a paper! I've stayed at better places

Room Tip: Garden room very good but all the food is over in the pub so might be easier to stay there. It is do...

Thank you for writing a review and please do accept my most sincere apologies for the poor impression you received of our food operation. I have met with Rob, my Old Swan Manager, to establish what might have gone wrong and, whilst we were fully booked over Easter, the numbers were no different to most weekends.

To cope with higher numbers it's essential that we're organised and plan each meal time carefully. Managing the dining times so that we don't get a backlog of orders is the secret but also communicating with our guests is crucial. When things do go wrong we're the first to admit our mistakes and make amends as this is the fair and professional thing to do. It's clear that on the evening of your visit we didn't manage the bookings very well, nor did we keep you updated on why there might have been a delay. To some extent I think the long wait would have upset your anticipation of the meal, as your criticisms of the food quality are not generally borne out by the many other guests' comments on the same dishes. However this is very personal and subjective.

Over Easter we received some great feedback from our guests and so we're bitterly disappointed that you did not enjoy your experience here. We'd love to make amends and so hope that you'll contact us again to re-book, when we can demonstrate our dedication to providing excellence in hospitality.

With best wishes and many thanks for sharing your experience.

We spent the weekend at this lovely hotel last month and it was excellent. We had a very comfortable room, everything was spotless with lovely bath towels, toiletries, coffee, tea making facilities, biscuits and a nice little drop of Sloes Gin to end off the day. The food was superb, we struggled to achieve 3 courses and the breakfast excellent, especially the sausages. We felt really looked after and the staff were first class. A superb hotel on the river with lovely grounds and excellent food. Will definitely visit again.

My husband and I visited last weekend for a couple of days to celebrate my 60th birthday. The location was absolutely beautiful and the staff went out of their way to make our stay very special. The room we had was a bit small but cosy but even so I thoroughly appreciated a lovely bath with fluffy towels and a bathrobe. The food in the restaurant was delicious and I particularly loved the breakfast with fresh strawberries and raspberries etc.and locally produced honey still in the honeycombe as well as the thick slices of bacon and local sausages.

The overall rating was great for two elderly people, late 70's, who wanted a couple of days away from emails and telephone calls and only lived 10 miles away.

The room we had,137, was really great except there was no fridge. The little extras, log fire, marshmallows, sloe gin really made us feel welcome.

The restaurant was a long walk away and had the weather been bad I'm not sure how we would have coped. The food was superb but the menu was a little restricted and disappointing. I can't speak highly enough about the staff. Although we were only there for two days we felt that we were with friends.

We will return.

Simply beautiful, an absolute must if you want a quite away from it all place to stay. From the Cotswold stone buildings, original wood beams and thatched roofs of the houses in the village and trout river running through the hotel make the Swan and Minister mill a great place to unwind.
Staff are very friendly and helpful without being overly obtrusive, Rooms are a little on small side but it all part of the character of the place so this is not a complaint, and bed was so comfy.

Food in the restaurant was good but not exceptional but the breakfasts were to die for, and the fresh honey on the comb was divine( they should sell this as I'm sure there would be many takers).

overall i would say a great place to stay and will definitely be going back.
