“Celebration”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

A celebration party of 16 staying for two nights. This is a typical cotswold hotel split into two parts. A little strange in that you check into one property at reception and then have to walk a short distance to the main hotel which exposes you to the elements!!
Our party was split between the Reception block and the main building which is homely but a little small for so many of us to be seated together. Not much room left for other guests when we sat in the lounge area. Lounge and dining rooms consist of a number of small areas together with a very nice room for parties which we had for our evening meal on the Saturday. This room was ideal for our requirement and was permanently staffed so service was excellent. We had chosen menus prior to the visit and the serving worked very well. Food was excellent and was enjoyed by all.
The hotel had a very pleasant lady who acted as a greeter and flipped between the two buildings. At times the staff appeared a little confused by her enthusiasm. However the position is warranted due to the unusual layout of the properties. We were in the main building which to say the least is a little quirky, but what would you expect from a 600 year old property? Excepting that aspect the building is a delight and one which I think all our party thoroughly enjoyed. You hesitate a little when paying £9.50 for a glass of wine and £9.25 for a beef sandwich so you can get the picture on cost. However this is a place where you go to treat yourself and why not? We all had a very enjoyable visit and thank the staff for making it so.

“Good food, service improvable”
Reviewed 7 April 2014

Saturday dinner whilst staying here. Good food all round. Good wine too. Well worth the money. Table in the brewer rear part was probably better than ones in the main old house. Bar seemed cosy.
Service needs to develop further in the restaurant. Unfortunately the speed was slow apart from the starters. Main course wine was several minutes delayed and came after we chased. Tables were not cleared of unnecessary plates etc after each course. Some staff seemed competent and others a bit below the overall establishment's standards.
Still well worth booking when staying, nude surroundings and good food.

“Let us down”
Reviewed 7 April 2014

You need to be sure which part of this establishment are you planning to visit. The hotel does indeed look amazing. However, our visit was for lunch at the Old Swan which has all the drawbacks of a "gastro-pub". The website refers to the slowfood movement. Yes important, but not if it refers to service. Two tips for potential clients, if dogs in small dining rooms might give you cause for thought, ask about the dog policy. We were suprised to find two medium sized dogs arrive at the next door table in a very small room. Also, the Old Swan carpark is some way from the entrance, over uneven paths. There are no designated disabiltiy parking spots, even though we had been advised there would be, and you may find it easier to unload anyone with mobility issues at the front door. But it might be unwise to expect help.

“Average gastro-pub food”
Reviewed 31 March 2014

While all the food was competently cooked, there was nothing outstanding.
I think a bit more imagination could be used for the vegetarian dishes.
The chocolate fondant was a little bit dry an should be served with some ice-cream.

“Good kitchen let down by the service”
Reviewed 31 March 2014 via mobile

A lovely Mother's Day menu £40 for 3 courses and a glass of champagne. The sun was shining and the terrace was beautiful.
The food overall was great with the exception of 2 of the puddings that were burnt but were swapped after pointing this out. The service however was lacking, gravy poured down a jacket, crackling missing of the pork, waiting and asking repeatedly for missing cutlery, condiments, the bill wrong , no one bothered to check on us, generally disappointing so we would. Such a shame as a beautiful pub and lovely food, just need to get the staff trained!
