“Family vacation to remember”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

We stayed at Torre Mannella for the third time this summer and I give it my highest recommendation. It is ideal for families with small children as well as teenagers.
When we went for the first time we had two young children and it was the perfect setting. The children could play outside in a secure environment, and the relaxed atmosphere really gave us a great family vacation. This year the children have become teenagers and again the setting gave them the freedom of going to the pool, walking to Piano Della Cona for ice cream and enjoying feeding the animals.
You can also find lots of activities nearby. We went to the Butterflyfarm, a small Zoo, water park, the beach and the new Shopping center for those who like to shop. There are also lots of festivals in the nearby villages where they celebrate pasta, mid-eval times, music and meat.
We stayed in the old farmhouse and although it is not a large room, we had all we needed, cooking facilities, bathroom and the children slept downstairs. We enjoyed sitting outside our room eating, playing cards, talking to the neighbors and looking at the beautiful scenery overlooking the vineyards.
But what gives Torre Mannella it's specialty is Onello and Lea. Their passion for making everyone feel at home and having the best time is what makes our stay a family vacation to remember. We have already started panning our next stay at Torre Mannella and hopefully it will be real soon.

Room Tip: If you like a real rustic feel, chose the old farmhouse rooms. We enjoyed sitting out side the room...

We just returned from a wonderful week at Torre Manella with our whole family of 13 (grandparents, parents, kids, cousins). Lea and Onello were wonderful gracious hosts who went out of their way to make sure our stay was memorable. Torre Manella is a beautiful working family farm with grapes, olive and cherry trees, and animals which the kids enjoyed. They also have a lovely pool which was a bonus for the kids. We were greeted in our lovely and spacious apartments (our families stayed in three of them) with a kitchen full of food for us as well as their own delicious wine, and a beautiful basket filled with their just picked beautiful and so delicious cherries. We at them all! Their breakfasts were always plentiful with a variety of breads, sweets, homemade jams/jellies, juices and coffee. We were treated at every meal to delicious foods of Abruzzo. We were treated to a food tour of the region with each meal, as well as an outdoor pizza party using their outdoor oven. Torre Manella is a jewel! We didn't want to leave at the end of the week. We made new friends there, kids and adults alike. We hope to keep in touch with Lea and Onello and their children. Meeting them is part of what made our trip special. They went out of their way to make sure our vacation was a wonderful experience and we will never forget them.

My wife and I stayed there when it first opened. It looks like they added a pool since then.

By the way, the date we travelled is not accurate. I'm not sure when it was: June 2006-9, sometime,....maybe. Whenever they first opened.

Why did we like it. Well, all the usual reasons Americans list: clean, relatively inexpensive, quiet, good service.

But that's not what we liked best about it. It had just opened. They hadn't gotten their food act together and my wife and I indicted we wanted food. No problem. They invited us to eat with the family, cooking on their open barbacue, grilling delicious lamb, chicken or beef of sticks with vegis.

More than that, we were overwhelmed by the hospitality of the family, at least 3 generations, maybe 4. The family was undergoing a tragic time in their lives. They opened their hearts to us. Yes, our Italian is not very good, but gestures, expressions, tears and laughter moved us both, and it is an experience I will not only not forget, but also one that I have experienced many times in the Abruzzo. These are wonderful people, and the older and quieter the location, the more down to earth and accepting they become.

The location is perfect for several reasons. It is close to, but not in Pescara, which is a tourist town that overflows with vacationing Italians in July and August (especially August). May, June,..., September are the best, least crowded, times to visit. Also, just a hint, the beaches to the north and south of Pescara are quieter and less commercial, and tend to have better eating places.

Citta Sant'Angelo is beautiful old city in its own Abruzzo way - a little run down, but lively and full oif chatty people. Please be sure to eat at the Ristorante Osteria dell'Angelo in that town. It is a fish restaurant, run by Dominic. It is beautifully decorated and located just off the main square inside a cavern-like room. The food is even better, simple and very delicious - among the best food we have ever eaten in this region and that is saying something. (Tell Dominic that Bente-Marie and Mac from Denmark say hi).

Finally, the location is relatively close to the foothills of the Grand Sasso del Italia and the Abruzzo national park. This is beautiful country. The back roads are not well marked, but it is a visual treat to get lost driving around the area and going into a farm house or a nun's cloister to get directions will be an experience you will never forget.

So, stay here. Rent a car. Enjoy

We stayed here for 4 days in May 2012, and just loved it. We stayed in the old tower which lends its name to the place, and it is a very spacious and comfortable apartment. The grounds and vineyards are very pretty, and the collection of pet animals were a lot of fun. Loved the sad old donkey and Trevor the lizard who frequented the tower. There's a great pool, although it was a little cold in May, but by June would be very welcome after a typical hot Abruzzo day. Citta Sant'Angelo is very near and very charming, and it's not far to the Adriatic coast, or to the mountains. It's a very convenient location indeed for exploring wonderful Abruzzo. Plenty of excellent restaurants in the area, and a supermarket nearby for home cooking. Best of all were the hosts, who were charming and helpful and included us in their lives in the evenings. They also have WiFi, hard to find in Italy. I'm really hoping to go back to Torre Mannella in the not too distant future.

We are a family of 5 and stayed for 2 weeks at Torre Mannella in the Casa di Onello. What a wonderful location! The apartment was very large, rustic, clean, private. We had loads of space and a wonderful view from our own private terrace. The Agriturismo itself is part of a farm and is formed of around 10 different apartments of all shapes and sizes. 10 minutes drive to the nearest beach, although go a little further to avoid the crowds. The hosts Lea and Onello are wonderful - very hospitable, helpful, friendly, knowledgeable about the area and they make wonderful pizza parties for all the guests to enjoy the local produce and get to know each other. The kids loved the pool and the farm (especially picking the fruit and veg, feeding the pigs and deer) and making friends with the other families there. If you haven't visited Abruzzo then go! It is a beautiful part of the country with medieval villages, national parks, very few tourists and very reasonable prices. And as ever the wonderful Italian hospitality. Highly recommended and if you book through Long Travel tell them they are wrong not to recommend the Casa di Onello - if you want room and freedom for a large family it is just perfect!!

Room Tip: Casa di Onello for large families; The Tower for character; La Casa di Dante for private terrace and...

We spent a week in this authentic farm close to Citta' san Angelo and had a very nice time. Two families, 4 adults and 5 kids, used Torre Mannela as a base to explore the versatile Abruzzo-region, which can offer everything from great beaches, amazing mountains (Gran Sasso) and charming villages and towns. We have spent a number of summers in Tuscany, and found the Abruzzo-region to be less touristy and less "polished". Our family stayed in the Casa del Dante, with a view towards the wine grapes and Citta' san Angelo. Spacious and nice appartment, and a very nice pool area which was frequently used by the kids.
