This pub was recommended by our B and B, and they were justified in the choice. Mine host was very friendly as was the young woman behind the bar. We ordered two meals, and honestly could easily have shared the one. The meals were very generous, hot and well prepared. That coupled with the atmosphere and very friendly locals made this a highlight of our day. Well worth seeking out.

we stayed at the square and compass over the bank holiday and was surprised what a lovely place to spend a relaxing few days in somerset...half and hour from Lyme regis and all the wonderful countryside ..room is well presented and very modern ..comfortable and quiet night
sleep...breakfast excellent english style and plenty of it
the owner is a lovely man who is so helpful
great place to stay

Room Tip: not the easiest place to find (imho) ...so ring the pub for directions rather than keep driving roun...

We have just had an overnight trip to this pub. Very clean, large & comfortable room; Plenty of bed linen & towels, huge room & Bathroom - this B & B looks like it has recently been refurbed. in very good order: Owner & staff very helpful and obliging - couldnt have had a better stay;
Food also very good in pub. Central location which made getting to Lyme Regis on south coast approx 1/2 hr run - and bristol/westonsupermare aprox 45 mins north.
Beds comfy and very quiet and peaceful location despite being in converted stables next to pub
we loved this B & B

We actually had booked to stay at this pub as we wanted to go to one of the regular gigs which they hold in the barn behind the pub. The accommodation is in what was a stable block which has been converted into a number of modern very spacious ensuite rooms. The bed was huge and very comfortable. Everything was clean and well appointed. The owner who showed us to the room was extremely friendly. We ate in the pub where they serve large portions of good pub food at reasonable prices. The breakfast was excellent in the morning too. We also enjoyed the gig - would definitely go back.

My wife and I had a meal in the square and compass on thursday night , the food was excdllent , portions large , good quality and exactly as drescribed on ther menu, reasonbly priced . I had breast of chicken in a wine a stilton sauce , with wonderful home made chips and freshly cooked veg . My wife had chicken fajitas , it came out on a sizzling platter , with 3 pancakes with guacamole , sour cream and tomatoe relish great tasting. The pub has a good selection of real ales and well priced wines. Decor is rough around the edges , but that just adds to the atmosphere , highly recommend , you wont leave hungry.

Due to an unpleasant experience with a chain and my company's policy on hotel bookings we were scratching around trying to find somewhere to stay whilst working in Taunton,luckily the lovely Kerry in our office came across this and I am so pleased she did

Initially as you approach the hotel it seems like a nondescript country pub but as you pull in the lovely stable conversions are in front of you with parking right outside,the greeting from the owners could not be more friendly and such a refreshing change from so many of the automatons who greet you at many hotels
So into the bedroom and we are talking room to swing a Giraffe,massive bed 2 easy chairs and a Shower room bigger than some bedrooms I have had all of it spotlessly clean and well appointed.
The meals are severed in the bar of the pub which has a lovely rustic feel to it and although the menu is not Haute Quisine there is plenty of choice and the food itself is excellent,one word of warning though they do not understand the concept of small portions so make sure you have a healthy appetite before going for 3 courses,the same applies to breakfast.
Is there a downside well I did have difficulty connecting to the free wifi but that may have just been my equipment otherwise it is all excellent

We went to the Square & Compass to see the Blues Band in the Barn behind the pub. The gig was a sell out and there seemed to be more people in than the venue could hold comfortably. There were seats at the front, but not enough and not laid out well, so we had to stand at the back, which is OK, but with others pushing past to get to the bar and the toilets, plus the fact that as I'm a bit short I couldn't always see the Band was a little disappointing. Also standing for that length of time made my back hurt considerably. Would we go again? Certainly if it was someone we wanted to see as the venue is quite intimate. However, next time we will arrive early to try and get a seat and hopefully supper in the pub, as this too was full and we ate elsewhere. Do take a torch though, parking is on the country lane outside the pub and its very dark!
