“Lovely dog friendly hotel”
Reviewed 14 September 2009

We were visiting relatives in the area and booked this hotel mainly because we saw they welcomed dogs. We had our two terriers with us and we were given a garden room. There are about 8 garden rooms (two storeys) and they all seemed to be occupied by people who bring their pooches on holiday with them. (Our sort of people :))

The first impression of the hotel is very good, a beautiful big Edwardian house in local stone. Ilminster is a pretty, busy little town with some friendly pubs. Lots of beautiful countryside and seaside to visit.

The room and en suite were reasonably well furnished and equipped - Ive no doubt the non dog rooms in the hotel were bigger and more luxurious - but we were more than happy to have this decent sized room with immediate access to the outside with our dogs.

The food was delicious and the staff helpful and polite.

The car park was very big but gets crowded as there were functions both nights we stayed. This may be less of a problem if you go mid week.

We stayed here for 2 nights. This hotel is not pretentious, simply old fashioned service. It has a massive outdoor heated pool which was a great hit with the kids. We had bar meals from the lite bites menu one night, and if they were light bites I would hate to see the full-size bites. The table was covered with rolls, chips, salad, veg, side orders etc etc. We simply could not finish it all, and it was really nice, cost under £30 including a couple of rounds of drinks - spot on. For a family I would recommend rooms 25+26. A double and a twin with en-suite baths next to each other but tucked away on a back upstairs wing of the house so no road noise or footsteps upstairs. Fronts onto a road so could probably be noisy, worth checking if you are light sleepers like us. We went free with Tesco vouchers and the hotel and central reservations were so helpful in sorting this out. Would thoroughly recommend.

Just returned from a lovely stay here. The room was newly refurbished and very comforable with an unusually wide selection of toiletries. The public areas were welcoming with a huge log fire in the bar. I found all the staff to be friendly and helpful - in fact I thought it was rather over-staffed which is rare these days. The food was above average and the breakfast, at which service was exceptional, was the tastiest I`ve had for ages. There was plenty of car parking and the hotel was 5 minutes walk from the town centre.
