“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

We were down in this part of the world for a weekend doing family history research, and stayed overnight at The Bell. We loved it. Parking was easy, the locals friendly, staff were delightful our room clean and comfortable, and the food absolutely excellent.

The Chef recommended the ham hock, and my husband became the first person, ever , to finish it ! My spicy lamb chops were excellent, served with cous cous, cole slaw and yoghurt - an unusual combination which worked brilliantly.

Breakfast was first class. When we asked what was available, the waitress smiled and said... well anything you'd like really.. which translated into two huge platefuls of freshly cooked local produce. The bacon was some of the best I've ever tasted. Gorgeous.

We'll certainly return. My family have been in this area for around 400 years - and with pubs like The Bell I can certainly see why !

Visited this pub for the first time tonight with my wife. Both had 3 courses for £15-excellent value. The meals were well cooked, home made and delicious. Portion sizes were great and the staff all very friendly. Will definitely visit again and recommend it.

We were a little worried about our stay having booked before reading some of the more negative reviews. We need not have had any concerns though, we received a warm welcome and our room was fully equipped, clean and with comfortable beds. Yes the rooms are on the small size and it is a pity the showers are in the bedroom not the en-suite but it is manageable. The food in the restaurant is excellent quality and I would certainly stay there again. It represents very good value for money.Parking was easy and close to the rooms. It has a motel feel rather than B and B or Hotel.

Room Tip: we were in an upstairs room, it was fine but was a little noisy and the steps would be difficult for...

We were visiting the area and staying at a cottage nearby. The cottage visitors book had several good comments about The Bell so we decided to give it a try. We called in at lunchtime to book a table for the evening, the lady who took the booking was very welcoming and happy to chat.

When we arrived in the evening we were immediately recognised and greeted.

There was a good choice of food which was far superior to the usual pub grub. For starters I had the pate with red onion jam centre, followed by a honey chicken salad - All was gorgeous. My hubby had the soup followed by the lamb chops - due to a bit of 'swapsies' I can confirm these two were delicious.

I think you can judge our opinion by the fact we returned on a second occasion, and would have eaten here a third time but found they don't serve food on a Sunday evening.

I really want to give this place a good review as it had a nice feel with an open fire and a lovely Chesterfield sofa which was very comfortable. The fire was essential as the ambient temperature in the rest of the restaurant & bar was a bit chilly for my liking.

Unfortunately the food was really only average. The chicken curry looked great but was really very bland with overcooked meat. The flavours in the pasta dish weren't very well balanced with the black pepper overpowering the salmon.

The staff were lovely and although our coffee order went astray they apologised and brought them quickly once reminded. The coffee was good.

The bill was remarkably cheap so it was good value for money - I think they are popular for food so maybe we were just a little unlucky with our choices.

I would go back but probably just for a drink by the fire.

Last minute get together with friends
From the moment we entered the pub we were made to feel at home from the friendly staff.
Food was really yummy and if my stomach wasn't so full I could of eaten it all again.
Fantastic food , warm and welcome atmosphere will defiantly come back again
