“Country house with ultra modern twist”
Reviewed 22 July 2013

A one night business travel stop on the way down to Cornwall. The main house is absolutely stunning and check in was very smooth, initially I was disappointed to be told I was not in a room in the main house but as I walked around the old stable blocks and saw “The Hyde” a ultra-modern design building all changed as it is simply stunning also. The room had great views over fields and was finished to a very high standard with a very good detail on design and look. Although no restaurant on site they supplied a substantial list of restaurants and the Balti house we used was great. Breakfast was buffet style and very nice with views over the main lawn and fields in a grand room. Would without doubt use again a beautiful establishment

We stayed there for a family wedding on one of the hottest days of the year, so it is always disappointing that they have built a very modern new bedroom block and don't include air conditioning, not even a fan.

Very clean and tidy, staff very helpful and breakfast very good, people will love the surrounds and the grounds, which are kept immaculate.

We stayed in the modern part (the Hyde) and had a fantastic view over the fields & walled garden. The room was fine, the staff friendly and helpful (even though they were dealing with 2 weddings). We had a peaceful night's sleep and a great breakfast. The grounds around Dillington are beautiful and I would certainly stay here again (...and I am very fussy). Very minor niggles could be weak wifi signal in our room, and managing to lock ourselves out as we had only one key, but overall these were nothing compared to the overall positive experience

We stayed in the main house for a weekend wedding at he venue. The staff were very friendly and helpful making our stay very relaxin. The great weather meant we able to take full advantage of the beautiful grounds and surrounding views. The large crochet and putting lawn kept the children entertained. The food was of very good quality and good sized portions. Our room in the house was full of character with marble fireplace and iron window frames, en suite small but spotlessly clean and functional. The house was full of history and interesting portraits, decor. This is not all mod cons location but we knew that and the character and setting made it a refreshing change from the somewhat sterile corporate standardisation of so many chain hotels. The heating was on full blast and we needed to open the antiquated windows to make the room a comfortable temperature, I would imagine the winter may bring a significant chill and draught however.
The children were accommodated on blow up beds in our room. We saw a few rooms in the house all different.
Breakfast was again excellent bar. prices reasonable. A very enjoyable weekend and lovely setting for a wedding.

Room Tip: Lord north 6 and 7 very nice.

Our two nights here have gone too quickly. We are here as part of a course but would very much like to come back on a b and b basis too. Can warmly recommend The Lord North Room! Breakfast is delicious and hot plates frequently replenished so the eggs are cooked perfectly and the bacon is crispy and has not sat bathed in water for hours. There is plenty to see and do nearby and can recommend a visit to Feast in Ilminster for lunch.

If there were half marks available, I would actually give this hotel 3.5 but as I think 3 is a bit mean.
Firstly don't expect this to be Stately home converted into a hotel as this isn't, the house and grounds are predominantly used for lectures and conferences and they have some rooms as a way of making a bit of extra money for there business. The house and grounds are stunning and just for this reason I think its a very deserving choice for a place to stay but don't be fooled by the glory of the architecture as the rooms and facilities definitely don't match up.

The bad points;
1. The car parking isn't very clear - there are many car parks for the lectures, conferences, study days etc but the guest car park is a bit out the way in the woodlands. We turned up at 9pm after a long journey and had to walk in the dark from the car park to the reception with barely any light.
2. As the house is old, we had a draft by the window (room 8) with meant the wind and rain was coming in. When the curtains were shut they were blowing inside the room :-( The good thing was that the heating was on so the draft didn't effect us too much other than the noise from the wind.
3. The shower took about 20mins to get to a bearable temperature.
4. Wine from the bar was off so we sent it back.
5. Overall staff presence wasn't great - there didn't seem to be anyone around and when we mentioned the window all they did was mop up the water.
6. £12 for a cooked breakfast when the room was £70 seemed a bit much. I would have preferred for the room to have been priced more expensively but with breakfast.

Good Points;
1. The think the price we paid seemed pretty good for the area (apart from the breakfast).
2. Room size was brilliant - so much space and lovely views of the grounds
3. Tea and coffee facilities in the room.
4. Good range of Freeview channels
5. Beds were comfortable.

I was told there were other rooms in the mews building with wet room which I believe might be slightly more modern so this may be a better option - unfortunately the website doesn't give much away with regards to price and room options or a gallery.

Overall, nice looking hotel with a standard room however a few tweaks could make it very nice :-)

Room Tip: Ask for more information on the phone when booking about rooms and prices etc Arrive in daylight if...

Stayed at this hotel for wedding weekend of 08/09/12. Our room was lovely in the main house, room large with coffee and tea making facilities and flat screen television, one minor irritation was wardrobe a bit small, en suite small but serviceable. Wedding party took over hotel for weekend so we were able to see quite a few rooms, the ones in main house were all different in size and outlook, room 1 was large had fantastic view over gardens and had a large bathroom with bath as well as separate shower and a full size wardrobe. We were there for a Wedding and staff could not have been more attentive with their wedding planner doing a sterling job, she was on site for at least 12 hours on day of wedding. If you want go somewhere for a chill out time this is the place , so peaceful, lovely grounds and main house full of character, if you prefer bedroom to be modern go for their new annex, most have door out onto decking with lovely view.

Room Tip: Ask when booking for view out over garden at back, one with full size wardrobe and if you prefer a b...
