Excellent for family holiday in Thorpeness near to the Meare and the beach, with the village shop round the corner.
My second visit to Thorpeness, This time with friends from the USA, done London many times and wanted to show them an English coastal location. Thorpeness is so English, not too busy a great place to relax. Lovely beach walk to Aldeburgh, gourmet pubs The Dolphin, The Parrott and a golf course.
No 8 The Whinlands was just perfect, located in the centre of Thorpeness, very cosy and well equipped. Would definitely go back again.
A great week at the Whinlands. House was spacious and clean, although downstairs loo was a little unstable and light bulb needed changing.
Bedroom curtains could be made a bit heavier to reduce light....waking up at 6am on hols not ideal.
The phones did also not appear to work, despite being available at 3 points within the house.
We also had concerns about the rubbish collection - outside bins were full on our arrival (assume from previous tenants) and didn't change during week of stay....by the time we had added to it, bags were atop the bins themselves...unsightly.
The house has lots of space and we found it comfortable. It was provided with enough equipment to meet most of our (4 adults, a 5 year old, a 7 month old, and 2 dogs) needs. It's very close to local attractions ‘The Meare’ boating lake and the Dolphin pub/restaurant, both are worth visiting. The beach is around 400 metres away – mostly pebbled so good for walks. We liked Thorpeness; quirky and interesting due to the way it was purpose developed as a holiday village around 100 years ago. We also travelled more widely as there's much worth seeing in the coast area. The house provided a good base to explore.
Parking may be a problem at busy times. At a pinch, there’s a space at the back of the house accessed via tracks. We were able to park on a bank opposite the house during our stay. There is a bus service with stops nearby. Don’t wait for a train however - Thorpeness station closed in 1966.
The house is rated as 4 star but, in my opinion, it doesn’t quite meet expectations. It's mostly niggly criticisms and they did not significantly impact our holiday; the main oven door didn’t close properly, no spare bin bags were provided, the garden furniture was in poor condition, a small TV with limited channels. Some parts of the property could benefit from a ‘refresh’ to brighten them up. It is very pet friendly however and this has to be taken into account when judging overall condition due to the additional wear and tear it imposes.
In general, it was a good place to stay in a very nice area. We would return to both.
We have just returned from a lovey stay here, we came for my husband's birthday and had various friends and family come to stay with us over the week. The house was plenty big enough and very comfortable, it was a lovely relaxing environment in a beautiful setting. Excellent for a family trip.

We enjoyed our 2 night stay at this comfortable house, nice and spacious for our family of 4 plus our dog. Very clean and well equipped. Loved the old style doors and quirkiness with wooden floorboards in hall upstairs. Although on a road, hardly any traffic passing to notice but was October. Internet service was good. Had a Sky Box which was good. Only downsides maybe are: could do with a larger TV in front room, one toilet not flushing (but did send someone round to look) . A stones throw was the Meare with a lovely tea room and The Dolphin pub where we ate one night, Nice food, not great choices for teenagers and service could of been better but pleased they fit us in as we had not booked and was busy. Lovely small village store. Beach (stony) a 5 min walk, great to walk along and walked to the lovely Aldeburgh. Thorpeness was a lovely English village which I can imagine more beautiful in the summer. Would definitely go back and stay at 8 The Whinlands again.
