“Some good, some bad”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014

Stayed here in August for two nights attending a wedding. Booking in was a nightmare. At the main reception where half-dozen couple were looking to book in no one was in attendance. Using an internal phone, told to go management centre, where ever that was, but got directions from a guest who was passing ( they had had the same problem ). The check-in staff couldn't have cared less. Our room in the 'Towers' was fine, clean and tidy but could do with a lick of paint. For our first night we ate in the main restaurant Bedlam ! The place was very busy, the noise was terrible. Everyone shouting to be heard above the din. The staff were very helpful but overwhelmed. The meal was buffet style. On seeing that all the meats were Halal, I asked if there was meat that wasn't, the answer was no. Why wasn't non Halal available to those that don't want it ? The Chef didn't know. I had a vegetable stir-fry which was fine. The wedding the following day was well organised and ran very smoothly, top marks for that. The next morning breakfast was again bedlam. The food was very good, non halal sausage and bacon available, the staff again overwhelmed. As I said earlier, top marks for the wedding, but . . .

Room Tip: If your not in the 'Towers' for a special occasion, stay some where else. Eat in the bar

2 night stay at £185pn, think they saw us coming. Whilst the website shows the lovely country house, much of the accommodation is in the management centre nearby, which is more like a premier inn.
Hallway carpets very dirty and the rooms are small and a bit basic. Air conditioning not working. Bit disappointing in comparison with other De Vere locations.
On the plus side the staff were very helpful and the breakfast excellent.

A little tricky to find but that is no fault of theirs. The hotel itself is functional, its ideal for groups or the corporate market they are clearly targetting and it does has a bit of a travel lodge feel to the communal areas, nothing wrong with that but the actual lwebsite is a little misleading as are some OTT reviews, so do not expect anything too fancy. Rooms are adequate although quite small. If you want privacy ask for a room away from the main entrance, otherwise you will be on show to the world and its wife.

Message to whiever adds contebt to the website for this hotel, please add this under the directions tab as I would imagine people make the same mistake as I did...

"As you pass through the main entrance ,do not try and enter the first building ahead of you as this is not staffed, you need to bear to the right and pass through a barrier. About 100 metres ahead the entrance can be found on the left hand side."

There, that´s better.

Room Tip: rooms away from the main entrance.

We stayed here for a week as our landlord was doing work on our flat and it's near my partner's work and we paid £224 for six nights.

I found the website incredibly confusing - what you need to know is there are three parts to the property:

Horsley Towers is the wedding venue and the building that has the fairy tale look to it which features in all the photographs. You're free to take a look around so don't miss the lovely arched outside passageways and the beautiful chapel which you can access from the grounds near the pond with the fountain.

The Management Centre is what it says on the tin - the rooms are small and lack privacy, but would be completely fine if you were staying for a conference, when you'd basically just use them to sleep in.

Horsley Court isn't attached to the management centre - we stayed in room 724 which is really big, with good aircon, a nice enough bathroom, and relatively quiet, but I did notice that rooms on the same corridor were significantly smaller.

The staff are all really friendly and obviously work very hard to help, though the bar is total chaos. Food often arrived cold, more than one person couldn't work out how much change you should get, and didn't know the difference between a single measure and a double, or red and white wine. The positive attitudes left you with an impression that they were really nice but a bit hopeless and I'm sure this could all be resolved with a competent bar manager.

Reception and restaurant staff are significantly better, and a special mention should go to Joe and Harry who were knowledgable and passionate about their work, the property, and the company.

The wine list is limited and terribly over priced, the food is good, but a bit over priced for what it is.

The grounds are stunning, and the pool very nice, and there are lots of nice little areas around the place to sit, with really lovely planting everywhere and unexpected ponds and streams which means there's lots of great animal and bird life to see.

Another nice thing is they have three help yourself refreshment stations - in the bar, just before the restaurant, and in the Horsley Court bar - where you can get tea, coffee, hot chocolate, herbal tea, honey and fresh lemon, soft drinks, biscuits, fresh fruit and fresh milk. Very welcome if you're there for a few days. The tea and coffee in the room was also good.

The biggest thing that lets it down, as others have mentioned, is that it's really not clean enough. The blinds in our room were heavily stained with mildew, the wooden floor was pretty dirty, the corridors need a really good clean, and the area around the pool and the changing rooms was consistently pretty horrible with dirt, hair, empty glasses and coffee cups, and dirty towels. Even the PIN machine in the bar was encrusted with dirt.

Location wise, there's a small parade of shops right next to the entrance which is handy, or you can walk into East Horsley which has a few restaurants, banks, a library and a really nice coffee shop as well as a train station with direct services to Waterloo. Don't walk down the main road with its narrow pavements and slightly scary traffic, instead, walk past Horsley Towers and the pond, through the small wood and use the lovely private roads, where you'll see lots of rabbits and squirrels and can have a bit of a nose at all the different houses. It takes about 20 minutes.

For the price we paid, it was fine, and the people were really nice, if we'd paid any more, or if we'd only stayed for one night, then this would have been a rather different review. It's not somewhere to go for a romantic weekend. Equally if it had been cleaner, and the food and drink prices more reasonable, I'd have rated it very good.

A couple of practical tips. If you have any mobility issues, then be aware there are little flights of steps everywhere, and many of the doors and corridors are very narrow, so you could have problems, particularly if you're a wheelchair user.

The Horsley Court reception is closed at weekends and It's quite a trek from the management centre reception, so check in, then park your car to the left of the HC reception (before you go through the barrier and next to the sign that says 'No Parking. Ever.') ŵalk through the archway and choose one of the green doors on the left or right to unload your bags avoiding the many doors and steps, before you then move your car to the main car park.

Room Tip: Room 724 is large with good aircon

Very welcoming and efficient staff. Upgraded after confusion with my booking, not my fault I might add. Could do with a lift, and the carpets in the main areas needed cleaning badly, but my room was excellent.

Room Tip: A/C very quiet, and very welcome on a hot night. No noise from other guests, or doors banging, my pe...

Stayed here in the management center.
Room was cosy, clean & quite hot, but no complaints from me - I didn't come to stay in the room.

The grounds are beautiful.
We had very nice walk around and explored the towers too.

There are a couple of bars, with some scenic courtyards and a restaurant serving top notch grub, had a really nice meal.

Went for a swim in the pool in the morning and then had a lovely cooked breakfast.

Staff were friendly and the service great.

Had a great time here & would gladly return anytime.
