The Navidale has a great location, looking out over the North Sea. It is an imposing country house hotel. The rooms are nicely decorated and spacious, but the hotel suffers from the owners fondness for antique ornaments, otherwise known as 'tat'. Dusting them all must be a full-time job. On checking in, the friendly owner introduces himself, and his dog. Archie is ok as dogs go, and rarely intrudes, although on a previous visit, he persistently hogged the small fire in the bar, the only source of heat in the whole hotel (or so it felt).
Dinner was a bit of a disappointment. There was a main course choice of steak or spaghetti bolognese. Nothing else! The steak was a touch pricey for me, at £17, so I had the spag (£11), which was only so-so. Given the hotel's maritime location, some sort of fish should be mandatory. And surely they must have a deep-freeze!
Given the poor choice of food, and the lack of heating, I can't recommend the Navidale, and hope I won't be back.

We stayed just one evening in a deluxe room. Just wonderful. This hotel sets the standard for B&B. Beautifully appointed rooms. A great cosy bar, and warm and friendly hosts. This is a place to spend a few days relaxing and enjoying the great views. Nearby Helmsdale has a fish and chip shop that is reputed to be in the top 5 in the UK. We had a great meal there.

Room Tip: We chose a deluxe room and were delighted.

Very good food by Florence although the menu is restricted to a couple of alternatives for dinner and rather strangely there is no breakfast menu, we were just asked what do you want cooked? Very strange for the German guests, and us, trying to guess what may be available. There were also three different cereals in not very attractive big plastic containers and some yogurts.
The hotel has magnificent sea views and gardens down to the cliff edge, or to the sea for the more nimble.
This Victorian hunting lodge is decorated internally with lots and lots of “treasures” and its little bar with a coal fire under a big round window is rather unique and pleasantly cosy.
There is a very large sitting room but the free wi-fi has limited range around the dining room doorway.
The bathrooms do need some updating. Having specifically checked that we would have a shower it proved to be over the bath with no working holder and no shower curtain. It was a hair wash shower.
Larry is a good host but Navidale House can be rather quiet and sometimes with few or no other diners creating a strange atmosphere.

I stayed at the Navidale House Hotel with my boyfriend, Dad and Grandad on a recent trip to Helmsdale, where my grandad is from. The hotel is very pretty. A beautiful white building set amongst green gardens running down to the sea. We recieved a warm welcome from the owners and we were very happy with our rooms. My boyfriend and I booked the deluxe double which had a four poster bed and beautiful views to the sea. The only downside was that the bathroom was a little dated and the shower didn't work very well but considering how little time was spent in the bathroom it didn't matter too much! Throughout the hotel it is decorated with old fashioned antiques, old paintings, china plates etc which we loved. We had dinner there on the first evening which was very well cooked...main course was around £15 but considering the setting it was worth it. We only ate there one night but spent time during our three nights there in the bar which was very nice...Larry was always on hand to provide us with a drink and it was very relaxing to sit in front of the fire after a long day sightseeing! The wee dog Archie was a nice touch to the family run atmosphere of the hotel. Breakfast was lovely, cereal, toast, or a full Scottish breakfast...or all three if you were feeling hungry! Very nice.

Overall it was a great stay!

Had 1 night here. Host and food were excellent. Spotlessly clean throughout.. After a poor night in Wick we returned for a further 2 nights of great food and company with Archie. Oh, Larry was very pleasant too !

We enjoyed a long weekend at this hotel and have to say it really was wonderful. The owners and staff go out of their way to make sure you are well looked after and created a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The hotel is the former hunting lodge of the Dukes of Sutherland and is furnished with quality antiques. We spent a good deal of time sat by the fire in the bar!
Our room was lovely and even had a big four poster bed. We had a lovely view of the sea too!
Apart from the owners, two other things really help set this hotel apart. First is the location. Set in a few acres which go down to the sea, it is heaven to sit and relax on a bench overlooking the sea (great for photography too) and on the Sunday evening we sat with drinks and just "chilled out". I'm told there are deer living in the garden but we were not fortunate enough to see them. Secondly is the food - Florence is a gifted cook and her food is innovative, beautifully presented and really delicious. Take a good appetite and do book for dinner!
One other character in the hotel is Archie - a Westie - who's party trick is to attack the TV should any dogs appear on it!
We very much enjoyed our stay, we found it an ideal spot for touring around the northern Highlands (Durness beach was stunning), were made to feel very much at home and we will definitely be returning.
