“Overnight stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 November 2012

We stayed in this superb hotel for one night. Everything from the welcome, food, room and Archie the dog was great. We ate dinner and have to praise the chef. Breakfast was first class. We would definately stay here again.

The thing I love about small, independently run hotels is the way they transcend the corporate blandness of the chains. From the moment we arrived, with deer foraging in the large garden running down to the beautiful sea views, via the owner's warm welcome and genuine attentiveness to our welfare, and the superbly cooked food, this was a great hotel. It is clearly a labour of love keeping the place going, and it was a sad reflection on the public's appetite for conformity that we were the only guests. The room was clean and comfortable, the bar well stocked and cosy with a coal fire. Next time you're on the A9, don't drive past.

The original part of the hotel is a big white building in a beautiful country setting with a mixture of maintained and "wild medow" gardens running down the couple of hundred yards to the cliff tops. There is also a more modern anex beyond.

The views in every direction are pretty spectacular and the first thing you notice getting out of the car is the peace. I don't just mean quiet, there seems to be a sort of "calm" about the place, at least there does to me.

Once inside you are surrounded by the sort of wood panneling you might expect in the entrance to a building of this type. Beyond this the interior is decortated in a manor which seems in keeping with the age of the building and again just strikes me as peaceful and relaxing.

The next thing you see will probably be Larry and he'll probably greet you like one of the family. I suspect checking in will be pretty informal and you'll soon be ready to start to unwind.

Running off the reception area there are a couple of large lounges which are very light and airy with views straight out to sea as well as the breakfast room and the bar.

I'd guess they have a dozen or so bedrooms of varying sizes and rates. Again the large rooms all appear to be in the style of the rest of the building. The singles seem very slightly more modern in the way they are furnished but are still very nice. All rooms have tea/coffee etc and now, thanks to the switchover, a brand new digital TV.

Breakfast can be just about anything you want (we want tattie scones, we want tattie scones) form cereals through fruits to the full cooked kick starter. I recommend the latter!

If you treat Navidale like a travel inn then you'll probably think the above a bit over the top but you'd be missing the point. Granted a lot depends on the weather but give yourself time to take in the surroundings. Walk down to the village (or drive down) then you can walk along the beach. In the opposite direction there is a pleasant walk to the old cemetary (not as morbid as it sounds). Check out the night sky (cloud permitting) and be up early enough to see the tail end of the sun comming up. In other words relax!

If you want somewhere to chill out with a certain amount of style then Navidale house should fit the bill nicely!

Room Tip: The sea view rooms are probably the nicest.

We stayed 1 night on our trip aound Scotland, the hotel was found as we were driving around trying to find somewhere to stay. A gem of a hotel, we stayed in room 3 which looked out over the Cromarty Firth. The whole hotel is filled with curios and decorated to the style of the age of the building and it looks fantastic.Nothing is too much trouble, we met Archie who is so part of the hotel. The small bar is cosy with an open fire, nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast was fantastic and the porridge was perfect. On leaving we were called back to be shown a route to take around the Helmsdale river as we said we were not in any hurry to get anywhere special, it was an eyeopener, we say eagles, deer and lots of sheep, fisherman and complete wilderness. I cannot rate this hotel too highly

Room Tip: Room 3 no bath but good hot shower and a fantastic view

My wife and I stayed here on the last night of our cycling trip to John O'Groats and at this stage we were both looking forward to finishing it and getting home. We were hoping for a clean room and something decent to eat before crashing out before the final leg.

What we got was a warm welcome, a great room and fantastic food. Not only that but the Wee Bar is a room I covet to this day and Archie is a lovely companion to share the warmth of the fire with whilst having a drink and a chat post supper.

Nothing was too much trouble, the bikes were no problem, our early exit the next day was no problem and the owners went to the trouble of making us sandwiches for our journey.

The room was well appointed, and the building as a whole was lovely, as was the setting and the view. If you're heading up this way, I would heartily recommend it!

The owner was brilliant and made us very welcome. The place is really unique - lots of old furniture and curiosities all over the place. The room was very clean, the dog was friendly, the fire was very warm and the bar was well stocked. We also had a great breakfast in the morning. We would definitely stay again.

The Navidale has a great location, looking out over the North Sea. It is an imposing country house hotel. The rooms are nicely decorated and spacious, but the hotel suffers from the owners fondness for antique ornaments, otherwise known as 'tat'. Dusting them all must be a full-time job. On checking in, the friendly owner introduces himself, and his dog. Archie is ok as dogs go, and rarely intrudes, although on a previous visit, he persistently hogged the small fire in the bar, the only source of heat in the whole hotel (or so it felt).
Dinner was a bit of a disappointment. There was a main course choice of steak or spaghetti bolognese. Nothing else! The steak was a touch pricey for me, at £17, so I had the spag (£11), which was only so-so. Given the hotel's maritime location, some sort of fish should be mandatory. And surely they must have a deep-freeze!
Given the poor choice of food, and the lack of heating, I can't recommend the Navidale, and hope I won't be back.
