Arrived here late after a long cycle ride was immediately made to feel at home by Larry. Room and breakfast were great. The view out from the front of the hotel is amazing & nice to see deer wandering about when I opened the curtains in the morning - well worth the visit

An old hunting lodge, nestled away in N.E. Scotland. This is a wonderful place to stay for peace and relaxation with lovely sea views. Spend time reading by the fires, taking long walks or fishing. There is a lovely cozy bar that is a pleasure to spend time in after dinner. Florence cooks the most delicious food and Larry does a fine breakfast.
Each room is unique, some with bath or shower. Our bedroom was really comfortable, inviting and very clean. We had the best of both worlds, with four poster bed and digital tv. There are lovely drives nearby through mountains and valleys with the chance of sighting deer.
This old hotel is full of character and chock- full of period charm. The owners Larry and Florence are friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. Can't wait to go back.

We stayed here for one night on our way south from Orkney. The plus point is that the hotel is well situated, had good views and is full of interesting artifacts, but, beyond that, it is very ordinary indeed. Our bedroom (room 8) was quiet, comfortable, but small, and the en suite facilities were merely adequate. (It was a struggle to turn off the hot tap, and no soap was provided - only a bottle of hand wash lotion.)

Having come off the ferry at Scrabster, we arrived, exactly as we had arranged when we booked, a few minutes before 7:30 p.m. whereupon we were asked to present ourselves in the dining room for dinner within the next few minutes: last service is at 7:30, and there is no flexibility.

The dinner consisted of two courses only: a chicken casserole, followed by strawberries with ice cream. These were adequate, but there was no choice at all - we were not presented with a menu when we sat down to eat. For this, we were charged £19.49 a head. The wine list was short and ordinary, and we were not even offered coffee at the end of the meal. The bar bill came to £15.10: a half bottle of commonplace Chilean sauvignon blanc and two single measures of malt whisky.

What makes this annoying is that what we received at dinner bears no relation to what is shown on the hotel's own web site; look up 'Sample menu' and 'Dining at Navidale', and you will see what I mean. The breakfast served the next morning was adequate, but the coffee was of such poor quality that I even doubt whether it was freshly made.

To summarise, if you want a night's accommodation in this part of Scotland, I think you'll get better value if you pick one of the local B&Bs, and either take their evening meal (which at least one of them offers), or else eat in a local restaurant, of which there is at least one. On the basis of our experience, the Navidale House Hotel offers mid-range B&B facilities at hotel prices. We paid nearly £70 each for one night's, fairly ordinary, dinner, bed and breakfast. I'm sure it's possible to do better than this.

In response to our guests who we had the pleasure of accommodating on the night of Monday the 9th of September I would just like to address your review.
It was your choice to stay in a standard room and yes our standard rooms are smaller than our deluxe rooms but just as well appointed and command superb views of which you seem to be oblivious.
It was no oversight that there was not any soap in the bathroom. We provide sanitizing hand gel, shower/bath gel, shampoo, hand lotion and cotton makeup remover pads. All of which you fail to mention.
On booking as you know we asked you (and all our guests) if you will be dining with us at Navidale and you were informed that we served a Table D'Hote menu the web site also has the same information and times of evening service. I always give our guests the option of eating elsewhere rather than making them feel obliged to eat here. I am a little saddened that you failed to mention that your main course was preceded by Home made soup of the day with homemade bread and another choice of starter.
The description of a chicken casserole does injustice to what in fact was on the supper menu; whole breast of Castle of Mey Chicken cooked with herbs, wild mushrooms in a Madeira and cream sauce. Accompanied by pan-fried potatoes and wilted greens in butter and tossed with bacon lardons.
The strawberries and ice cream was in fact Compote of strawberries served with creamy vanilla ice cream. still strawberries and ice cream but with a little more finesse don't you think? You failed to mention the cheese and oat cakes that was also on offer. I have had customers from all walks of life take photos of the food that they have been served at Navidale!
Coffee and tea were also on the menu...it would have been no trouble to serve you with a cafetiere and mints. speaking of coffee I am sorry you did not enjoy our brand of coffee served at breakfast...If you were so unhappy why not tell us...why wait and put it on TripAdvisor? we could have discussed the matter and put it right for you. We won't be changing our brand of breakfast coffee any time soon as you are the FIRST to comment on it in 10 years!
wine; As a small family owned hotel we have on offer an assortment of 20 wines from eight different countries ranging from £15.00 for our HOUSE WINE to £30.00 for our more selective wines. You chose to have a House White that appears not to have been to your palate. We can only go on how well the house white has been received by others and yours is once again our first complaint. You also had two malt whiskies which at £3.80 a nip represents value for money. Interestingly you would pay more for both products in the local Fish & Chip Restaurant in the village that you thought was wonderful!
Larry & I appreciate feedback...all customer feedback whether it is positive (which is lovely) or in your case negative. We will take those negative points and see how we can change them to positive. What is paramount to us is that people feel welcome and enjoy there stay at Navidale. The repeat trade we have year after year is testament to this. However it is our aim to improve where ever we feel the need and ongoing redecoration and upgrading is always in progress.
In any part of the United Kingdom our prices represent good value for money and in some cases we are not much more expensive than some B&B's. However, by the tone of your review it would appear that money is your measuring stick. I suggest the next time you are in this area and are looking for accommodation and somewhere to dine it would be my suggestion to you that you continue to frequent the (excellent) fish & chip shop with the decor that suits your taste and the B&B that you recommend will surely welcome you with open arms.
My husband and I are sorry you were disappointed with your stay at Navidale but thank you for taking the time and effort to write your review.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Navidale. The old hunting lodge is full of antiques and artifacts. Larry did everything he could to made us feel at home and Florence's cooking was excellent. As we were only staying one night, we opted for a standard room which was basic and rather dated, so we'd go for a deluxe room next time. Great value, highland hospitality and good food. We'd definitely go back.

Archi is a lovely little Westi and Larry only managed to trod on his little paws twice ha ha ha poor old archi bless the old boy? Well dog apart ? What a great break ! Larry does the most magnificent breakfast and his wife dished up the most wonderful dinner ( the roast potatoes wow speachless)? despite the fact that we arrived quite late on the day, thank you so much Larry for you patience and kindness? The hotel ? Where do I start ? This place is a true family run hotel with everything in its proper place , amazing sums it up well. It's like stepping back in time in the main living room, you can imagine a famous writer sat at the old typewriter looking out to sea and pondering on what too write next? This building is outstanding and full of characture and charm. This hotel and staff will take some beating that's for sure? If you heading up to john o groats make sure you stop off here? Not far from some quality fishing apparently? Ill try that next time hopefully , wonderful sea view from our room, excellent food , and great hospitality and finally archi you was the star of the break
Yours thankfully tony

We stayed here on our penultimate night before completing lands end to John o'groats and what a find! From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel at home. The bar is very comfortable and the evening meal was delicious. The rooms were spacious with everything you needed and Larry is a wonderful host. Archie the dog definitely rules the roost! A lovely place to stay.
