We stayed at this Hotel for one night as we were visiting our daughter who had moved to Leeds for Uni. It was lovely. It is situated down a quiet, tree lined street and is a short walk from the very lively (especially on a Saturday night) Headingly main student area with shops, bars, coffee shops etc. Having previously stayed in a large, one of chain hotel, in the middle of Leeds we loved the homely and comfortable feel of this hotel. The fact that we could walk our daughter back to halls after our evening out was a bonus. It is brisk 30 min walk to the centre of Leeds but there are buses passing by the main road all day and into the early hours. We stayed for the carvery on Sunday lunch and it was extremely good value and very good food with extremely fresh vegetables. They had a big party in a separate room and made sure they delayed our entry into the dining room to avoid being caught up with the big party getting their meals. Our daughter who is vegetarian said it was the best vegetarian option she has ever had. We are definitely returning before our daughter leaves Halls!

I have now stayed at Haleys for a number of nights. The first time was in room 7 for one night and it seemed to be still undergoing rework (mentioned elsewhere) , with holes where lights should have been and the bed was one that dropped down out of a wardrobe and therefore had no bedside tables, which I found inconvenient for cups, specs, TV remote etc. Not recommended. However on departure, the friendly receptionist explained that other rooms with more 'conventional' bed arrangements were available, and have since stayed several times in the annexe and found a much better room and intend to stay again next month.

The building is old and therefore somewhat characterful and tired, which is being addressed. For the price, I would far rather stay here than one of the large chains and is set in private grounds and therefore very quiet with plenty of parking

Reception staff are extremely friendly and welcoming and the general standards were reasonable overall with only a couple of minor housekeeping issues.

The English breakfast was freshly prepared, tasty and reasonable. Overall good value for money despite room 7.

Room Tip: Avoid room 7!

We stayed for one night and found the hotel to be lovely, our room was great and the en suite beautifully tiled and toiletries which is rare to find these days except for the ones fixed to the wall.
The hotel is in the middle of a repaint and will look lovely when completed
Considering this hotel is off a busy main road you would not know it as very quiet
Will definitely stay there again

We have stayed at Haley's several times over the past few years and booked into our regular room in the extension, "The Riley" in January, in plenty of time for our stay in March. On arrival we were told the room was closed for re-decoration (even though it had just been painted prior to our earlier visit in October last year) and were given a greatly inferior room on the top floor of the main hotel, for which the price was the same.
The room was far too hot to be comfortable, had no window in the en-suite bathroom and was generally very small. On top of that, there was only one side table to the bed, hence no light one side and the spare lamp could not even be plugged in because the plug was the wrong shape for the socket. There were holes from cigarette burns in the net curtains, ingrained dirt round the shower head and bottom of the bath, one ceiling light was not working in the bathroom and the bathroom sink was also partially blocked, leaving the water very slow to empty.
To add insult to injury, it was very clear by night time that there was someone staying in the room we had booked, because the light was on. There were a lot of large parties staying at the time and my guess is that the management had decided to "bump" us and possibly move an additional bed into The Riley which is a generous size.
You always have to pay on arrival at Haley's which is unusual, but not normally a problem when you get the room you actually booked: this way, we were paying for sub-standard accommodation we hadn't even seen.
Our main complaint about all this is why we were not at least contacted in advance and given an opportunity to choose another, comparable room? The answer must surely be so that nothing could be done on arrival, so we were presented with a fait accompli.
Judging by our and others' comments they must be re-decorating at Haley's almost non-stop and to do this when guests are using the public entrance and stairways is appalling: one of us got paint on our hands from the main entrance doors, heavy lights had been moved to precarious and potentially harmful positions to accommodate the painting and even wallpapering and most of the guests in the main hotel had to pass the single decorator more than once on the stairs and landings!
Fortunately, we will not be staying in Headingley again. There is little competition for hotels in Headingley, so we can see why it might have been voted the best but as far as we are concerned, we have dubbed it Fawlty Towers!

Room Tip: The Riley in the extension! Avoid top floor of main hotel.

Really enjoyed our stay - the bed was comfortable with lovely bed linen - the room was clean, nicely decorated, the bathroom modern and the surroundings quiet. Room slightly on the small side (we chose the basic double room) and the shower could have been more powerful but for what we paid I have no complaints. We took a taxi to town for £3.70, there are plenty of buses or about a 20 minute walk. It is in Headingly and we were visiting the University so it was perfect.

Room Tip: We asked for a room on a higher level and were given a room on the second floor - incase we needed t...

We stayed here for one night in a double room.

The location was excellent, the building was lovely on the outside and the room and en suite were clean and tidy.

A little tired around the edges, could do with an update, but a repaint was in progress. I thought it was unusual that we had to pay upfront.

A short break in Leeds, and having spent years up there I chose to stay in Headingley - good choice, plenty going on around and about, and loads of buses to/from the city.

The hotel is a nice building, nice reception area and adequate rooms, but our room was VERY warm all night long which was somewhat uncomfortable at times, but bearable.

We chose not to have breakfast at the hotel, as plenty of places nearby offer breakfasts at much better prices, especially if one person if only having a sausage sandwich!

Room Tip: Maybe ask if any rooms have air con, or if a fan is available if you feel the heat.

Dear reviewer, I am rather puzzeled at why the room should be so warm as the radiators can be easily turned off, I will investigate to see if any of the radiator valves are seized but I am not aware of this.

We do offer a good all round breakfast the usual continental dishes accompanied with the traditional english breakfast at £6.95. I think this is the best value of the day.

Thank you for this review. G.J.
