“Good service and trying very hard!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2013 via mobile

Had a one night stay which was comfortable, the rooms have recently been redecorated and the staff were very helpful.

The breakfast was also very good and the hotel provided good value for money.

Overall, the rooms are to a good standard, it is in a good location and the staff proved very helpful.

It was the perfect location for visiting our student daughter. Far preferred it to staying in the centre of town.

The room was a pleasant surprise, very comfortable. The bathroom was clean, but in need of a little tlc.

The staff were very helpful and friendly.

We booked this hotel for a family wedding and were travelling with a young child and infant. I had requested a cot on the online booking page but no one ever came back to me. When I called to double check I was told, quite brusquely, that they already had a note down to put one in the room.

When we arrived we were told the room was on the second floor (no lift) which was disappointing when travelling with such small children. We weren't offered any help with the bags until the young lady on reception glanced up and saw us struggling half way up the stairs but she never even got out of her chair.

The room was large with bath and shower in the en-suite but felt unkempt and not well thought through. The style of room seemed to have a split personality with a rather stylish headboard and beautiful antique pieces let down by side tables, side lights and chairs that were neither the right proportion or era (think BBC's Mrs Bucket). There was a king size and two single beds plus the travel cot we requested. The beds were comfy but seemed to have overly large sheet/duvet cover sizes on and the extra fabric hung over the edges of the duvets giving a scruffy appearance. Flat sheets were just stuffed under the mattress. No hospital corners here! The pillows were rock hard.

The king size bed was on one side of the room, with the single beds between it and the television, so no chance of quietly watching tv whilst the kids slept. I have stayed in family rooms where they try to zone the space to make it more user friendly with young children and this was lacking here. The arm chairs were pushed up against the side wall as there was no-where else for them and had large holes in the arms. The curtains needed rehanging and I had to reattach some curtain hooks so they would shut properly. There was nowhere to sit and dry my hair/do make up that had a mirror, good lighting and a plug socket so I ended up sitting on the floor and my husband moved a wall mirror for me.

The bathroom had chips in the sink, plastic tile edge and bath. The shower needed a very good clean, especially around the base of the door. The toilet roll holder wasn't properly attached and would have proven a hazard for my children it we hadn't moved it out of the way. The skirts needed dusting and for a family of four we were only given three sets of towels.

Breakfast was a basic spread, Kellogg's mini cereal boxes and some rather anaemic croissants plus the obligatory, if rather underwhelming, cooked breakfast. I don't understand why british hotels think that scrambling eggs and leaving them under a heat lamp to go rubbery is an appetising way to entice diners, nor serving rather cheap and tasteless sausages or cool, tough bacon.

It wasn't expensive, in fact I would say it was relatively cheap but no matter what your target price range, if you are in the hotel business then these things should be second nature. When I lived in the area, many moons ago, this was a very highly regarded hotel but feels like it might be struggling now.

This hotel is not struggling at all and has a very high occupancy rate - we are always full on Saturday night amongst other nights.

This sounds like a family room and was sleeping 5 people (including the cot) at £79.00 including breakfast, which is £19.75 per person based on 4 people sharing.

Your comments:
1- you asked for a cot and it was provided.
2 - yes we have no lift, this is a listed building with it's own Victorian charm. If you had previously stayed here at Haley's surely you would have noticed that there was no lift before to the second floor 9 bedrooms we have.
3 - all beds are new with built in mattress toppers
4- we do offer fried eggs done to order should you wish to have an alternative.
5 - the sausages we use are award winning welsh sausages made by Langford's for our breakfasts.

You may have stayed at Haley's years ago when charges were double what they are now, but we still maintain a quality hotel which has recently had all new carpets fitted in public area's with the bedroom carpets to be replaced in January.

All rooms have NEW 32'' free view Tv's, NEW beds with toppers built in, all rooms have been recently decorated and all that complimented with Victorian charm. I think that's a VERY good deal at £19.75 per person, don't you?

I am sorry to hear that Haley's hotel is not to your liking.

Having been working away this was my 3rd night in a different hotel I was getting a little tired of stopping in poor hotels. I was initially sceptical at first as I was stopping in the building next door. This was short lived once I got into my room. It was lovely. Nice bathroom well laid out room with decent tv and really comfortable bed. I chose not to eat as the menu was a la carte. After having 2 bad experiences in the previous days with other hotels. Therefore I cannot comment on the food. I chose to look online for the local venues and found a nice restaurant at the end of the road and took a stroll around the local night life. I called into the hotel bar for a nightcap before bed. The staff were friendly. The hotel is on a quiet road and is of solid construction. I had a great nights sleep and would recommend this place if you want a great room. This place ticks the box for me.

We visited Haleys again this month for the 3rd timein 3 years and it is still a lovely reasonably priced place to stay. We also saw some nice improvements with my parents staying in Room 2 where a new carpet has been laid since their last stay, and decaffeinated tea is finally provided :-) However as previously thought the luxury room 2 can be a bit dark in the autumn and winter evenings as the only overhead lights are immediately above the door and over the tea/coffee area - the rest of the room relies on lighting from bedside lamps which are still a bit dull - 40 watts are quite weak in such a big room and hard to read by. Could we have more powerful bedside / room lights please? My single room had much better lighting and was similarly clean and welcoming. Lovely hot water! Very warm rooms (so warm we had our windows open in October!). Breakfast is an unlimited buffet and yummy with everything you could wish for. All the staff were really cheerful and efficient. Thanks Haleys!

yes, of course you can have more and better lighting, new carpets for all bedrooms will be arriving on the 8th December and work to start shortly after. We will look at the lighting at the same time. 'Promise'.

Thank you

Four of us went for Sunday lunch booked for 1p.m. At 1.30 we were still waiting to be taken to our table. When we asked if we had been forgotten we were told we could have gone through at any time! One of our diners was vegetarian and we had told them this when booking and also again on arrival. We were served drinks at our table but the waitress spilled orange juice over the cutlery, she saw what she had done, so she wiped the bottom of the glass with her hand and just walked away leaving the spilled drink on the table! We waited 20 minutes for the vegitarian meal to be brought. We all went to the carvery table and helped ourselves. The food was good. We waited another 10 minutes before the plates were taken away and we asked for the sweet menu. Again we were forgotten and had to ask again after 15 minutes. To top this off, the card machine was broken and they would only accept cash asking us to go to a cash machine down the road. Luckily we pooled our resource and paid in cash. The whole place would benefit from a refurb too, looks tired and bare.

We have stayed here twice this month. The first time we had a deluxe room in the first floor and our son had a single room and the second time we had a double in the annexe. All 3 rooms were clean, a good size and comfortable. We were very happy with them.

The night receptionist man is very helpful and attentive. Nothing seems like too much trouble.

The breakfast is good value. There is a continental style spread as well as full, buffet style, cooked breakfast.

We will definitely stay again and recommend this hotel.
