“Amazing Hideaway on Salina Island”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

“Al Belvedere” is located in the very small village of Leni, a short bus ride (or a tough hike up) from the port town and the fine black beaches of Rinella. It is a quiet and pretty cozy hotel with several terraces that overlooking on gorgeous deep red twilights on the surrounding “extinguished” volcanos and Alicudi & Filicudi islands.
We spent 6 nights at the beginning of July (we chosen Villa Eolo, a sort of Junior Suite equipped with a small kitchen and a big patio where having a short break from the Sicilian heat)…. and we love it at a glance!
The owner of this Hotel is Francesca (a wonderful jolly person which…in the short time of our stay, we felt we became good friends). It’s very difficult to describe all of this in a few words....we enjoyed chatting with her in the warm and starry evenings and took advantage of her knowledge of the islands. She’s always committed to pass on the family and home-grown Aeolian atmosphere to her guests. For instance, this “Sicilian way” is reflected in the breakfast, where only organic homemade legendary jams (more than 25 different types), tart and cakes (and other amazing sweets) are served, and of course, also during the Apericena (an informal dinner served on the terrace at dusk with agreeable background music…. unmissable). Everything served at the residence is grown or made on the island, and Francesca and her mother are superb chefs, believe me! Every meal was a feast of flavors and unforgettable aromas! All the staff are welcoming, attentive, hard-working, and easy going, special thanks go to Alessia and her discrete “touch”.
We can only ardently advise this hotel to anyone who loves nature, silence, dramatic landscapes, scooter riding and swimming in the turquoise Ionian Sea or just the utter enjoyment of an unspoilt island.
Thanks a lot Francesca (and the rest of the family) and keep up the awesome work you are doing!
We look forward to get back soon at “Al Belvedere”!

P.S. At the end of the day, a special greeting goes to a very good friend of mine, Achille!

This is a stunning hotel with beautiful views but unfortunately it isn't quite up to standard for what you would expect from a 4* establishment. Our experience was similar to that of Emily who has also reviewed this hotel.
The location is a little off putting - quite residential with limited services and facilities within walking distance. The inconvenience this posed could have been minimised by information and services at the hotel but this was not so.
On arrival we were offered no information as to how the hotel works - where and when to eat for example. We were told that they serve dinner so when I arrived at dinner time, francesca advised that she would have to check that her mother could make us something as nothing was prepared. Luckily that was fine, as there was no other place within an hours walk to eat. Had we been told upon arrival that we needed to book dinner earlier we would have done so.
The website says 24 hours front desk. However come afternoon the hotel was empty of staff. We arrived early lunchtime and within 15 minutes no one was around. There was no information in the room or front desk as to what the area offered in terms of amenities nor anything else. In a busting town or typical tourist trap that wouldn't be an issue. But this was a small residential village, with no one around to help of offer advice. We ventured into the village in desperate search of water and a snack after a couple of hours travelling on the ferry/hydrofoil. But the one shop and bar in town was closed. We ventured out three times that afternoon in search of some local amenities that could accommodate us, but the place was like a ghost town. francesca finally arrived back around 430 and we were able to ask her about what's available in the village.
To be honest, the while experience was simply hard work. We constantly had to badger francesca for information and advice. Nothing was forthcoming without significant prodding. The only advice she offered was to hire scooters to get out and about which, after a previous motor cycle accident, neither me nor my husband were up for. With irregular bus services (one every 90 mins which didn't even turn up one day) we felt quite isolated.
This hotel should not be a 4*. Whilst the views were wonderful, there is a compete lack of customer service that you would expect from a £200 a night hotel. If you decide to stay here, do a lot of homework first to find out what's available to see and do across the whole island as you won't get this advice from the hotel.
I will say that when Francesca and her staff were looking after you at breakfast and dinner time, they were wonderful - very lovely and accommodating. And the food was some of the nicest we ate in Sicily. The young lady that works there also took fantastic care of our room. We were quite messy and she cleaned and tidied meticulously everyday.

After calling the hotel in the morning we were assured that there was a bus service from the port to the hotel but on arrival we found that the buses only run in certain hours so we called and Francesca came to pick us up.
The hotel is very well thought out - the terrace looks over filicudi and alicudi, the rooms have fridges/cooking area and the garden is beautiful- but unfortunately a few things made our stay less than perfect. On arrival we were not told what time breakfast was served, we handed over our passports but half an hour later there was no-one around so we couldn't have them back and we often found that there was no-one at the reception/bar so it was impossible to get a bottle of water (something which is essential in 30C heat!).
We met a couple who were on their honeymoon and they also found it strange that on arrival they were not told about where to go for water/what time breakfast was etc. which I think is a real shame.
The rooms are nice and each has a little terrace out the front with a table and chairs. In our room the shower had a curtain, which made it nearly impossible not to flood the bathroom and is also annoying as it sticks to you. The shower head also seemed to be broken as the water pressure was too high and it did not stay up on its own.
Having read on trip advisor about the fantastic apericena (aperitif/dinner) we asked the first afternoon about this but we were told that we would have to book. We booked for our second night and we thoroughly enjoyed the food and the view at sunset. Unfortunately the price we paid for both the food (all vegetarian) and the wine was extortionate.
Breakfast was very good and it included homemade jams, candied fruit and a home baked cake/croissant. I think if we had stayed at this hotel for more than three nights we would have been a little bored of the repetitive breakfast but for 3 days it was fine.
Overall, I think the hotel has not properly considered the needs of its guests which is a shame as with such a beautiful panorama this could be an excellent hotel.

Belvedere is an excellent place to stay. The sunsets and the views on the other islands are spectacular, the breakfast with the different homemade jams and marmalades, the cakes etc. was excellent. Francesca, the owner, was very helpful and nice and looked after us so that we didn't miss anything. We really enjoyed our stay there and we will come again.

Was greeted by the very friendly and gracious Francesca, the proprietor of this beautiful place. It's almost like you're own private villa it feels so intimate. She made some delicious jams and offered me to relax and slow down, which i really needed to do since I was trying to navigate the entire island of Sicily in two weeks. Francesca also helped get a scooter that would make roaming around the island easier. Originally I was planning on staying at Al Belvedere for one night and ended up staying 3. Situated on a quiet street with magnificent views from the terrace, it's the perfect way to get away and decompress from the outside world. I highly recommend enjoying the home cooked meals and the tranquil way of life. This part of Salina is an ideal hub to visit Pollara, and Malfa. I will definitely recommend this beautiful place and hope you get to enjoy Francesca's generous hospitality!

Room Tip: All rooms seem intimate and quiet. I had the junior suite which had a small kitchen and a beautiful...

We went to the Belvedere for breakfast and we really enjoyed meeting Francesca the owner. we try all the amazing traditional food she had to offer and everything was served with so much passion.
We had a look at the rooms but we didn't stay because we were there only on a day trip but they look very clean and comfortable.
The view from the terrace is breath taking.
