Dunes Hotel & Beach Resort
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in Pedro Gonzales
Reviewed 30 September 2010

Arrival
The flight leaving Trinidad was six hours late..anyone travelling to Margarita via Laser Airlines should seriously consider another carrier. Laser is very unprofessional and disorganised. The greeting at Dunes was very festive and welcoming with a complimentary drink and a few minutes of dance from the staff.

Food
The buffet style restaurants "Tilapia and "La Cachama" the menu was very limited and the quality(taste) of the dishes were extremely poor.
To my disappointment the speciality restaurant "luciano" was not available for premium all inclusive guests. You had to pay $100 to eat there.
The silver lining for dining was "El Caney", the a la carte beach restaurant, the service was excellent and the food was great.

Stay
There is a swamp/mangrove bordering Dunes resort, as a result there is an unbearable presence of biting mosquitoes on the property. The premium area of the resort was well kept, however the main area was not kept up to 4star standard as indicated, I would say 2 star at best. There is stagnant water in unmaintain pools and fountains in lobby areas and other areas. The beach is not safe for bathing, however the swimming pools were very inviting and enjoyable. There are a number of cats that roam around the property so you should be aware of this, they didn't disturb me though my g/f wanted to play with them.

Rooms
Rooms in the premium area were relatively clean, houskeeping only give you 1 towel per person per day, so when you shower in the afternoon after they clean, the same wet towels must be used at night and the following morning. Balcony doors must be kept closed at all times, or else mosquitoes will invade.

Departure
Again Laser Airlines which was scheduled to leave at 9:45pm, left at 2:00am the following morning....with no apologies nor compensation. Check out is at 1:00pm, and they were nice enough to allow us to have dinner before we left theresort. I hope this was helpful.

Stayed at Dunes from 29th July To 01 August 2010, this hotel is a great place, the grounds around are well kept clean, the rooms are basic but clean can do with a little upgrade, but never the less there is lots to do during the day, you would not be a bit set back with that. The food was good plenty to choose from must get a meal to be satisfy. The night shows are well organized and well performed. The hotel staff very helpful and freindly although they speak little english they try to make you happy. I did enjoyed my short stayed and will be back soon. One more good the pools are well kept and always clean. To the management keep up the good work.

A belated review, but here goes! We travelled to Dunes in March 2009 for 2 weeks. We travelled with an extended family group including 4 young children. We stayed for 2 weeks although 3 other members of our group stayed for a week. We had booked via First Choice and had arranged to get married here too...which we did! I think we knew what to expect following the reviews read here on trip advisor. The arrival at the airport was long and drawn out and very hot...not the best start to the holiday with 4 tired kids! Transfer and arrival at the hotel was straight forward, but our room was not as requested (family of 5 crammed into a double room with camp bed and cot in the kitchen area!)...but this was changed after 2 nights to a large family suite. Decor at the hotel was tired, but food was plentiful and on the whole nice. Entertainment at night was great...kids loved it. We had the kids pool to our selves most of the 2 weeks and other pools were quiet too. Beware kids playground---we complained to First Choice about his after a serious incident!!! Beach is nice...but waves strong and dangerous for children to venture too far. Staff were helpful and room was cleaned everyday. The marriage package we had booked went to plan, except the tropical storm on the wedding day...but this just added to the fun! We did not rate the meal in the hotel restaurant which we used for our wedding 'reception' though, staff were rude and we had to wait ages...not the perfect end to the wedding day, but we managed to laugh about it afterwards. We travelled to the resort just before the main holidays for the region, if we had travelled during the easter vacation I think it would have been too busy and crammed, so glad we went when we did.

Totally not worth your money, even if it's cheap. And we paid quite a bit for horribly kept room.

Our group: 4 young people in their 20s= 2 Venezuelans, 2 Americans, reviewer has lived in Venezuela for the last year.

I wish I could give this hotel a higher rating, but I can't, after the experience we had our first night. First of all, the hotel has NO signs anywhere on the island, so we spent at least two hours driving around and asking for directions (and everyone just told us to "sigue derecho y pregunta por alla!", which did NOT help) at night before we got lucky and found the place. When we arrived, we were given two rooms that weren't even in the same building, in the old part of the hotel, which is 3 stars. The security guard was the one who showed us to our rooms and made us extremely uncomfortable by asking the two girls staying in one room if they would be staying alone in their room that night. The doors on both of our rooms could not be locked from the inside, so they did not sleep well that night. In addition, the rooms were right by the main "party" areas and main front desk, so it was loud until very late. Both rooms were dirty, the water came out brown (even the next morning after we had run it for awhile), the shower had rust stains, our toilet seat was broken, and the cherry on top? In the girls' room, there was an air conditioner above the twin bed (which we were told would be two double beds and were actually one twin and one double) that leaked water all over the bed and she woke up in a very damp bed the next morning. Our sheets were itchy and the air conditioner was either on full blast and loud or off.

We wasted our whole next morning trying to switch to the five-star area of the hotel, which was recently built. After being bounced back and forth between reception desks and told there was no way, there was no availability, somehow two adjoining rooms just "showed up". Kudos to the manager who got us into the rooms, but shame on them for making us pay the upgrade to the nicer rooms and wasting our whole morning after the horrible experience we had the first night. It wasn't much money, and definitely worth switching.

On a more positive note- the five star area is EXCELLENT. The rooms were pristine, the king beds were very comfortable, sheets were clean, they fixed a key card problem almost immediately, an actual employee took our luggage to and from our room, the pool in that area was beautiful and very clean, the area was very well-lit (the three star area was in total darkness when we arrived) and drinks and hot dogs/hamburgers/fries were offered poolside. The buffet was good enough- a wide variety of fruits, veggies, desserts, main entrees and good empanadas/arepas. Fresh pasta or omelette bar every day and one night there was a BBQ. The shuttle service was good, and necessary considering that the main eateries were far from where we were staying. The bar service was fantastic, and I highly recommend the "all-inclusive" pass and getting a "coco loco" drink as soon as you arrive.

We contracted a scuba-diving day with the travel agent in the main reception area and it was a good trip. Great fresh fish lunch and interesting experience. The price was good for the service we got.

Two of the nights we saw groups of "chiguires" (capybaras) running around the resort and it was probably the funniest experience we had there, seeing gigantic, docile hamster-like creatures running around. And save some chicken for the kitties running around, too.

Summary: this resort is amazing, as long as you stay in the five-star "new part". We went in low season and there wasn't much to do at night, but that was okay. The food is good and the hotel service is good as well (just keep insisting if you don't get your way- this IS Venezuela and that's how you seem to do things here). The hotel is located in a remote part of the island, which is very inconvenient if you don't have a car (or even if you do, if you don't know your way around the island) and want to see the sites. The hotel beach is nice and the drinks and pools everywhere are great.

I spent 3 nights there with group after tour in Venezuela.

Check-in process was quite fast, as well as introduction done. But then...our room obivously was not used for some time and it was smelly and somewhat dusty (it was ok after housekeeping next day), water in toilet was brown, in same way it came from tap initially. Longer we stayed, better it became. Also all sounds from neighbouring rooms were heard.

Food selection was quite ok. Cats started to get annoying - they were all around every meal. Coctails choice and preparation in bars was excellent.

Location is good - right at beach with ongoing activities there. There were alot of pearl&souvenir sellers, so dont expect to have much privacy there. Hotel is quite big, but getting around is easy - buses are going around very often

On arrival to the hotel we waited 10mins to be checked due to lack of staff. We were assign in room buliding 3. Things were pretty ok, we were assigned double beds even though we booked as a couple. Things looked good untill we were ready to shower then the shower head was not working properly, which took us a good while to get showered, water was leaking from the apartment above, the hair dryer was not working, we had to beg for an ironing board and an iron. The next day we couldn't get towels at the pool, dirty linen was placed on our beds. The final day was calamity, no water and electricity and we were checking out at 11:00. Some of the reception staff was very uncaring and did not pay attention to our complaints. they just went unheeded.
For the good part of the trip, the service at the restaurants la cachama was awesome, the staff was very attentive, and polite. The food was very tasty, well laid out and very enticing. The pool area was kept clean. The bars always had things available and the service was excellent. Even though we had a rough patch we have consider coming back to this hotel.
